The garden and pool areas are beautiful but the rooms are lacking maintenance. Leaky faucets and drains, worm out appliances, and just all around abused furniture. The restaurants are nice but very expensive for Mexico, the prices are some of the highest here. The people at the Grand Luxxe have priority over everything at this resort. Very difficult to get T-times at golf course. Most of the staff are very nice though! Spend your money on an all-inclusive, You will spend less money and have a much better time.

Your staff are absolutely wonderful and all deserve a raise! From the reception and cleaning staff to the hotel waiters one couldn't ask for better service. Special commendations to Cafe de Lago staff Jesus, Gustavo and Javier who provided us with exceptional service. Our grandson enjoyed the Kids Club and Kids Area immensely. My husband and I were at the Grand Mayan from September 1-8, 2012.

Very nice resort with amazing pools. The "studio" is actually just a hotel room , although a very upscale suite. There is no coffee maker or frig. I asked about getting a coffee malker or renting a coffee maker but was told coffee makers were not allowed in studios. ??? That's a first. Had to get up, get dressed and walk a long way to a restaurant for morning coffee. This is a huge resort and finding your room is a daunting task. Be sure you get a bellboy even if you only have one piece of luggage. My arm band that is suppose to be my room key would not work. For three days, I had to hunt a housekeeper to let me in or walk a very long way to get my key reprogramed every time I wanted to get into my room. They acted like it was somehow my fault because the bracelet wouldn't work. Finally after many many trips complaining about it and threatening to just leave, they checked out the bracelet and decided it really did not work. They gave me a card key and I had no more difficulty. Nice restaurants with very good food. Loved the lazy river.

Room Tip: Don't get a studio if you like to enjoy your morning coffee on your balcony.

Recently we returned from a week at the Grand Mayan, N.V. where the whole staff was just great. We had a great seventh floor ocean view 1 br. room also over looking the picturesque landscaping and pools.
Check-in was a bit slow but there was a bar around the corner for drinks. The 5 story foyer is very impressive statuary art. It was off season so not all of the restaurants were open. Those that were, the food was good, not great. There is both inside and outside eating and both were well attended. There are a couple of off site restaurants a short walk away that also are good. An Oxxo store for groceries and beer is near by. Prices the same as the further away Walmart. Everything was very clean and crews were constantly keeping everything clean. They sprayed twice a week at dusk to keep the bugs away. Travel to the sister resorts/restaurants on property by large golf cart was easy but a little slow some times. Every five minutes wasn't always adheared to. All but the Gr. Luxxe and Cafe del Lago (great breakfast/brunch) were a short walk . This was the off/rainy/construction season which came with some irritations. The Bay wasn't always clear because of the rain. There was construction noise throughout the day, louder on the non-ocean side where the resort is creating new buildings and visual landmarks to make that side interesting without the water view. We went to the presentation to see what was going on. It is impressive if they can do it all. They own all the property to the airport, the bay to the highway.
We had a lot of perks because of the time of year and construction. We met a lot of nice people and had a great time.
There is a happy hour from eleven AM to nine PM at some one of the many bars. Probably to get you to travel around around the property. There were always chairs and service available. The pools are unique. The "lazy river" is great. Even the many fountains/falls covered up the construction and typical resort noise.
When we go back, there will be one heck of a great resort built.

Room Tip: Do the presentation with an upgrade and other perks included and try to keep it short.

This is my 2nd review of this property.

We went back to the Grand Mayan during the Labor Day holiday week. (Sept. 1-8, 2012).

This time of year there is the rainy season. Due to inland rain the streams carry a lot of sediment into the ocean in front of the resort, so the ocean looked fairly brown. We swam in it anyway and the water was nice and warm. We had rain 3 nights, but it was after 8pm when the storms rolled in, so no problem. I think it rains further inland almost every night this time of year. It was very hot and humid.

The Good:

*The resort was not at all full, so we had no problems finding lounge chairs.

*We had a pretty good food and beverage credit, so we had some really great dinners. The Peking Duck at Gong is great, and the seafood platter for two at the seafood restaurant is also very good. I would skip the seafood buffet. It seemed like a seafood buffet in Indiana, not what you expect when you are so close to the ocean. I am not knocking Indiana.

*Great Tennis courts. We played every day.

*There is an OXXO convenience store within walking distance. Very handy.

The Bad

*They are doing a lot of construction on this resort. There are places there that you have to get to by golf cart. The Golf carts do come around often though and we didn't really have to wait.

*We had a promotion for Food and Beverage credit while we were there. If you get one of these make sure you read the letter that you get when you get there. Tips and purchases from the Sun Market are not included in your promotion. The next time we go down we will take cash for tips and not tip on the bill. We keep pretty close tabs on what we spend and it always seems like it is wrong when we checked out. More on Checking Out below in The Ugly section.

*The US$ to Peso rate outside of the resort was around 14 pesos to the dollar. The resort gives you 11 pesos to the dollar.

*They are tearing down the Mayan Palace. The pool out in front of it (the one right on the beach) is being renovated and is supposed to become the pool for the Bliss or the Luxx. That was our favorite one.

The Ugly

*The check out process is terrible. We got in the check out line at 11am and finally got done at 12:10pm. Check out the night before!! By the time we got to the counter we basically had to just sign the bill and run off to catch a Taxi to the airport for our 1:30pm flight.

*The have bad mosquitoes during the rainy season. The joke around there is that the Spanish word for mosquito is vampire. Most of the outdoor restaurants have bug spray on each table. They are not out during the day, but at night watch out.

*The timeshare free breakfast update sales presentation. What a drag. Ours started at 9am and we got done at 1pm. This is about average for this. Just refuse to go if you don't want to go, then refuse again and again... We went, but I refused to give the girl who schedules the breakfast times the $20 to reserve a spot.

Beautiful resort, with amenities for everyone. Massage was the best I have ever had. Will do that again. So many pools for all ages. Service is 5 stars!!!!!!!!!
If your looking for a place in Mexico to travel, come to Nuevo Vallarta Grand Mayan, Grand Bliss or Grand Luxxe.
They have so many restaurants to choose from whether indoors or outdoors at the beach.

From the minute we arrived we loved every minute of our stay. The grounds were perfect, the hallways were extremly clean, the rooms were totally dust free and very clean. Room service was exceptional. We ate at all the many restaurants and never had a bad meal.
Two small complaints are...the hotel staff did nothing to keep the kids out of the adult pool and there was no transportation (golf cart type) to the farthest restaurant....1/2 mile? The walk did us good, so the definition "small" complaint applies.
