First of all I would like to say that the place is just opening and they are TRYING really hard. unfortunately they are not yet ready...

There is good and bad. The bad first. We were in Tower 2 which just opened in the last couple of weeks.. The hot water system seems to sometimes work sometimes not. We had to run the hot water for several minutes to get it to go hot. The voice mail system was not working. The TV optical fibre system was down for about a day.... Our friends were on one side of the building, we were on then other. They had the most divine view of the lagoon and sunsets. We had a view (and listened) of the construction on Tower 3. It did not start really early (Kudos) but it went on all day until about 6 pm, tractors, bulldozers, hammering, shoveling, trucks unloading dirt... we found it aggravating and then kind of fascinating (engineer!!!). The on floor concierge was pretty much brand new and not much use. The early morning coffee, although a great idea was poorly executed... coffee luke warm and never on time. On the amenity side, bring some knives and why oh why no dishwashers. Quite a hike to the lazy river at the grand mayan.

Now the good... The rooms were fantastic, beds comfortable, spacious, fantastic decks (except for the construction noise), good appliances (coffee maker, microwave, stove, fridge/freezer). I am a bit of a golf snob, but the course was really a great track, although there was a distinct difference between the front, older nine and the back, newer nine. The pool and staff were very helpful and friendly. The beach is great for the 3 8-10 year olds, hours of fun.

We have been coming here for 3 years, the first 2 at the grand mayan. The jury is still out but we are thinking the Grand Lux is going to be GREAT once the start up issue are dealt with.

Room Tip: Go for the lagoon side

We stayed at the Grand Mayan from September 25, 2011 to October 2, 2011. The property is beautiful but large. We stayed in the main building. If you ask for an ocean view they will upgrade you but you have to sign up for the time share. They will also give you 3000 - 5000 pesos credit and 30% off anything you buy at the resort. The buffet breakfast at Cafe Del Lago was incredible and we did go back another day. Well worth the breakfast. However, the presentation does not "begin" until well after you finish eating. Do not chat. Get your food. Enjoy and get on with the presentation. If you are not interested say so and keep them to the 90 minutes. We got stuck from 9 AM to 4 PM at which point I had a melt down and left. We still got our stuff but it ruined our day as it took me 2 more hours to get over my anger! The Tramonto Italian Restaurant was excellent as well as the Epazote Mexican Restaurant at the Grand Lux next door. Avoid the Havana Moon which was awful! There is good transportation between the various resorts and restaurants. The pool staff was great and we had a lot of fun doing the various activities. Overall very good resort.

Room Tip: Ask for a high floor and ocean view but plan on wasting a day with time share people

We stayed in Grand Mayan from Oct. 23 to Oct. 30. and really enjoyed our being there. The check in was a little upsetting because first we were assigned to a room facing the parking lot. After almost angry conversation we got an ocean view room but on the 2 nd floor. We didn't really see an ocean from the balcony but at least felt the ocean breeze. That's Okey. The staff in the resort is excellent. They are doing a great job, being paid just nothing. For example the room maid makes $8 per DAY! The shuttle driver 200 pesos per day which is about $17. So they all rely on tips. The resort is huge but the shuttle service between buildings is very prompt and operates till late night. All drivers are very friendly.
We attended the timeshare presentation and got 1500 pesos plus 10% off our bill. Not bad. The restaurants are really expensive but even we went to Walmart for groceries, we still used them. The worst is the Japanese one (forgot the name, painted red). The service and the food are bad. They had a delicious sea bass, but it costs $38 a plate. We couldn't afford it. We liked Havana Moon, in which the food is tasty and prices are reasonable. We sat on a veranda facing the ocean-- so beautiful. If you go to Samba -- order a plate for 2 -- grilled seafood. It costs 480 pesos, but it is delicious and huge. We ate leftovers next day.
The beach and pools are beautiful, though we spent the most time at the beach only. Our friend stayed in Grand Luxxe which is luxurious but their room faced the construction so they had to ask for another room and got Villa which is even more luxurious. There is a lot of construction going, but in a couple years there'll be a train station to the Airport, mall with more then 40 reastaurants, Cirque du Soleil theater and many more. We'll definetely come back when the construction is over. And don't forget the Spa which is free but the enjoyment is priceless.
By the way, go to Paradise Village for groceries, it is very close, and there is a free trolley going there from the Main gate.

I have stayed at the Mayan resorts a few times before. (Rent weeks off of friends who own timeshares). This time we got rented off of someone off of redweek.com. We had a suite with kitchen/living room, and 2 joining room each with a kind beg and a couch, and 2 large washrooms. The whole suite was huge and could comfortably sleep 10 people. The kitchen was fully equipped. pots and pans, cutlery, blender(head to walmart - take the bus, its cheaper! stop just outside of the resort! and pick up some pina colada mix and rum. Much better then paying $6 down at the pool. People bring bottles of beer and food, and their own drinks down to the pool!), stove, fridge.

We went to the time share meeting our first morning there just to get it out of the way. (Yes they are really pushy, yes they push you off down the line saying "i just want to review and see what we can do better for next time... where did the last person leave you off with.. how come you didnt accept... did he tell you we can do this for you..." that happened about 4 times. Just smile, and say you have kids to put through university. Works everytime. Great breakfast included with it though, bring the kind for breakfast, and let them take off to the pool after. If you are looking for a time share, hold off until you hit atleast the 3rd person. Their deals gets a lot better as they go on, and we have family that own a timeshare here and absolutely love it!)

Food on the resort is amazing! I would definetly recommend the sushi at least once! We usually made most of our breakfast and lunches (with the old ceaser salad and club sandwiches down at the pool - which were amazing!), and then headed out for dinner. If you're looking for something close, their is a mexican place down the street just outside of the resort. 4 of us ate (And each had a large margarita) for an astonishing $75. (Its down the street to the small traffic circle, cross the circle, and head left for about 10minutes. Its right on the marina, and has a small patio outside, and room inside. They also have a live band there some nights as well.) If you head into Peurto Vallarta, there are also all of the Senior Frogs and bubba gump choices as well. We had a great night at Senior Frogs, and there are lots of nice dance clubs down in that area as well. I would recommend taking the bus there if your heading there during the day. Its much cheaper! (Take a taxi in the evening... it gets a bit sketchy in the backroads where the busses stop later at night).

Overall the resort was amazing. The pool was spectacular. We met a whole bunch of people that were staying in the Luxe and the Bliss, and they actually enjoyed the Grand Pool better then theirs (more going on - tequila volleyball, games, water polo, water aerobics, crafts for kids, kids pool, music). Make sure you go down early in the morning or else you'll have trouble finding a spot. and bring down more than just a towel (maybe some magazines or a book to put on your chair as well).. We met a couple who had their blackberry stolen when they took a dip in the pool away from the chairs. So try to get pool side chairs, and stay within visible distance if possible... (or leave your phone and valuables in the room safe...!)

Room Tip: Get a room with a kitchen if you can. Hotel restaraunts and drinks are pretty expensive. Why not use...

We stayed at the Grand Mayan and had a fabulous time. We went with another couple and got a double room overlooking the ocean and all of the pools. We stayed at the resort most of the week and had plenty to do and the pools were fabulous. We loved the lazy river and the wave pools. The restaurants that we tried were all very good. The service was excellent. We
upgraded to the Grand Luxxe Residence Club and can't wait to return.

Our room was amazing. 2 bedrooms and a living area in the middle. HUGE! We had a cooling pool on our enormous balcony that the kids loved. The pools were great. Restaurants really good. Our kids had a great time in the kids camp thing while my husband and I went out for dinner alone. The timeshare people were not hard to avoid.

Our third visit to this resort. Everything was wonderful. We knew to avoid the timeshare sales people. Told them we were absolutely not interested and they didn't bother us the rest of the trip. Rooms are large. We had a 2 bedroom for my husband and two boys age 15 and 11. We had traded thru RCI so didnt even try to get ocean view. Surprisingly we traded our studio unit in cabo for two 2 bedrooms at grand mayan. Made a walmart run and usually ate breakfast and lunch in room with dinner out. Went to Claudias restaurant which was close by....atmosphere was okay but food and prices were great. About $10 for shrimp faitas. Ate at the italian restaurant..a little pricey for the amount of food. Punta Arena was delicious. Didnt realize we needed reservations but still got wonderful table at sunset.

Kids loved the pool area and so did the adults. Drinks at the pool were heavy on sugar and low on alcohol.

There was a lot of loud constructiondown by the mayan palace but we were far away and it didnt bother us. Had a massage at the spa and it was by far the best I've ever had. Husband and son booked a scuba trip thru vallarta adventures. Very affordablle and inlcuded lunch and drinks with 4 hours at caleta. The beds are very firm but other than that perfect resort.
