“Spoiled Rotten”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 13, 2009

My husband and I went to the Grand Velas in August 2009. We have been to PV 3 times, for comparison, our most recent stays were at the Grand Marival and the RIU Jalisco. The Grand Velas is right next door to the Marival - however it felt a world away in quality. It had been ~ 1 year since we had been to PV, and we found that things have gotten cheaper since our last visit (H1N1 impact I guess). In fact, we decided to just cab it from the airport, and we were shocked when it only cost us $12. We were both positive that the same ride to the Marival a year before was $24. At $12 it was much cheaper than the pre-arranged transportation, and much faster! Now that I know the quality of the hotel, I'm sure they would have arranged to have the air conditioned hotel cab there to pick us up. We checked into our room - which was huge by the way. It had a gorgeous view of the pools and ocean - not to mention a great seating area that you could keep dry even in the pouring rain.
The food - excellent - even the buffet breakfast and lunch at the beahside restaurant was excellent (sushi was fantastic). The staff was unbelievably friendly, helpful and courteous. We went to all of the "fancy" restaurants (once the staff shamed my husband into putting on the required pants and taking me) and enjoyed them very much - especially the chocolate souflee at Pilaf. Since the hotel had such low occupancy, we were often the only one's in the restaurant, but the staff was so good about keeping a quiet, romantic ambience. After dinner, we would stroll out to the lobby bar terrace and listen to the keyboard player (took requests) and watch the sun slip down below the horizon.
We ordered room service quite a lot - free and fast, also we used the in-room movies and safe. Our cleaner Miriam was fabulous - she added all the extra little touches and you could tell cleaned the heck out of that room.

The Spa: Wow what can I say - I have been to quite a few spas in my travels, but this one takes the cake. The staff is so accomodating (they always called me "Miss Kim" which cracked me up). You arrive about an hour before your booked treatment and they will guide you through their spa ritual beforehand. Dump shower, cedar dry sauna, dump shower, steam sauna, dump shower, hot tub, leg reflexology pool, cold plunge, warm soaker, lounger with neck and shoulder hot pack/cucumber eyes. They have snacks, water, and cooling spray bottles available to you at all times during the ritual and they are so attentive to ensure you get through everything in time for your treatment. The treatments were fabulous - I had an aromatherapy massage and a rain shower treatment. Before all treatments, they do a little welcome ritual which is a nice touch. Let's put it this way, the spa was so good that even my husband went for a massage, and generally he won't even go near a spa! He heard from a worker at the hotel that an NFL team owner had come to the hotel and done the ritual and had asked for the plans for the whole ritual area (especially the dump shower) so that he could have one installed for his team so this I'm sure pushed him past his fears of the spa.

The pools are unbelievable - 3 infinity pools. Our favourite spot was hanging on the edge of the final infinity pool right on the ocean people watching and exchanging meaningful conversation between Palomas!! It was so hot while we were there that if you weren't in the pool, you were passed out with heatstroke!!! The pool waiters served us right in the pool - unfortunately the first night we were there the wind was so bad that it knocked the palaypa down on the swim up bar - so that bar was closed the entire time we were there, but the poolside service increased to compensate.

We took a cab down the malecon one day and shopped till we nearly dropped - it was very hot in August - much hotter than we expected. We found that prices in the market again were cheaper than the year before. We also found however, the the amount of people pushing timeshares on the street had increased by about 10 times. Some of them were extremely pushy, but our trick is to tell them that we are "sister and brother" (most timeshares will only allow married couples to attend). We also use the excuse "we've already gone." There were some pretty good looking timeshare deals, however in our experience be prepared to waste the better part of a day even though they tell you it's only a few hours - worth it if you want the free stuff they offer though. One thing we found this trip was there were art stores that sell Hulchiol art (beaded) but they were a timeshare front. You negotiate the price on the piece of art, then suddenly it can be yours free if you go to the timeshare presentation at x, y, or z. I am a collector of Hulchiol art (the beaded masks especially) so I was tempted, but somehow this just doesn't seem right.

Overall, if you are reading these reviews trying to decide if this place is worth the money - stop and book it. You will not be disappointed, as this is the nicest hotel in all of PV guaranteed!!!!

This hotel was unbelievable. It was so beautiful and the service was outstanding!!! ALL staff members went above and beyond every day to make our stay the best they possibly could! The food was excellent and the spa services second to none. Extra thanks to Gerardo who went above and beyond in service and friendliness! Jackie and Benjamin's service was also outstanding! Housekeeping was also excellent and our room was spotless each morning and evening! If you are looking for the best service and a beautiful location, this is IT!

Normally all-inclusives would have you eat their food (cooked for masses) and would charge you extra to go into the mini-bar or order room service. Room service is typically very standard and monotonous. Here we could have eaten through in suite dining and had as luxurious of foods as eating in their fancy hotel restaurants!! All-inclusive here means you don't have to worry about any food or drinks!! Want two meals? Fine. Want to have fun and relax? Fine. Our 5 year old son loved the kid's club (included in price) and enjoyed time away from us. This was a well worth the price experience!!

I had a small group of 30 people on an incentive trip. The hotel and its employees were the best I have ever experinced at an all inclusive resort. LORENZO the pool waiter is the best. If you go be sure to sit in his area.

All the restaurants are great and the menus are not just your ordinary meals you expect at a all inclusive.

What can I say? This place is heavan on earth, I can honestly say that it exceed every expestation I ever imagined and then some. We traveled to the Gran Velas for our Honeymoon and everyday we were reminded of that fact, by the champagne, specialty drinks, and the special "Happy Honeymoon" dessert that helped us end every amazing meal. We will be back here at least once a year, if you ever wanted to know what it feels like to be a celebrity, you have to go to the grand velas. We were treated as famous people every moment, the best week of my life!!! AMAZING CLEAN WONDERFUL AMAZING....every employee made an effort to call us by our names the entire time. Not to mention the SPA---HELLO---amazing!!!! RELAXING!!!

This place is spectacular.

Top things about Grand Velas:

Cool towel and fresh drink when you arrive. Followed by check in sitting down in their lobby, they come to you. (a common theme throughout)

Every single server/bartender/bellman knew our name from day one and we knew theirs. (Edward-Bell, Cecilio-Bartender, Benjamin, Francisco, Lorenzo, Arturo, Eli- Servers & many others...) The best service I've ever received anywhere.

The pool service included: attendants to clean you sunglasses, bring you fresh towels, bring you and adjust your umbrella as needed, mango/coconut/chocolate popsicles, cold towels and Evian sprayed in you face. Not stuck up service, just very cool things to have.

The grounds were very well kept and everything was always clean. We always felt safe. The ratio of staff to guest had to be close to 3:1. Never did 20 minutes go by and you were not asked if you needed something. Not overbearing, always kind and sincere. We never felt pressured to tip extra, although we did due to the great service.

The food: All the restaurants were top notch. Our favorite was the French, Piaf. You can pretty much order any food from any restaurant at any time and get what ever you want. Oh, and the 24 hour room services is great too. Anything and everything delivered to your door.

This was our honeymoon and we got special deserts each night as well. I highly recommend this to anyone wanting a great all inclusive and some time to relax. As said in other review nightlife is not too crazy, but that is OK by us. We've done the club scene for years and this is much more enjoyable.

We recently got back from our extended honeymoon at the Grand Velas and we already can't wait to go back. Upon arrival we were greated with cool wash cloth and a local cocktail...very refreshing. All of the rooms at Grand Velas have spectacular ocean views with magnificent sunsets. Although we were hoping for an upgrade due to the low capacity, we were given a Parlor Suite, which was a perfect room for an extended stay (we were there for 11 days). There was a bedroom with a large king size bed separated from a large family room and balcony. Its hard to believe this was an all inclusive due to the quality of the food and the liquor. We tried each restaurant and couldn't decide which was our favortie. I would suggest the lamb at Frida, the Chateaubriand at Piaf, the lasagna at Luca, and the Ahi tuna at Azul. Overall, the food was amazing! Room service was also great, although the food wasn't quite as tasty. We ventured to the spa for some deep tissue massages for added relaxation to our trip. The facilities are unbelievable and the massage was the best I've ever had! Definitely make sure to add a spa service to your trip! Then there's the staff.who truly make the hotel stand out from the rest. Between Cecilio and Franky behind the pool bar and Marco and Lorenzo offering pool side service, we always had a beverage at hand! The activity people were great as well, not too pushy but making sure everyone felt included in a game of beach volleyball. The hotel was only at 8% capacity, so it was a little slow, but the bar is open until 1 am for those who want to keep the night alive! Overall, this was the best vacation we've ever had and strongly suggest everyone stay at the Grand Velas at least once in their lives! The hotel is full of friendly staff, relaxing scents and smells, unbelievable views, and upscale food. We can't wait to go back!!
