My family of 4 (2 adults, 2 kids ages 6 and 4) ended up at this resort for only 3 nights after a horrendous experience at a different resort. We have nothing but great things to say about the food, staff, cleanliness, location or entertainment.

The food was wonderful and the staff at the buffet and snack bar were always so accommodating and friendly. The buffet had great, tasty and fresh food every time we went there. We didn't do any of the a la carte restaurants but we were told they were wonderful too. I found that there was a lot of selection at the buffet, it was very fresh and my whole family (picky toddler included) always found something to eat. I did find however that their seafood was a bit on the overcooked side, very minor con in my opinion. The staff were so fast to help us with drink orders, getting special requests for our kids etc. Very hard working and so helpful.

The snack bar is very simple with a small buffet and a small menu. Expect items like beef or chicken hamburgers, hotdogs, onion rings, quesadillas etc. The nice thing about the snack bar is that the items off the small menu are made to order so you aren't eating french fries or onion rings that have been sitting out all afternoon.

The kids loved the Kids Club and the Mini Disco. The kids club room is very small right because of the renovations going on but Natali and Mariel are fantastic. They did crafts, games and all sorts of activities with the kids. My 4 yr old is usually glued to my side but she had so much fun playing with the staff and other kids that she went for an hour or so everyday. Vincente was a great host for the mini disco each night. The kids had a great time doing the house dance and participating in the contest/activity each night. Can't say enough positive things about these 3 staff members. They are hard workers and made a huge effort to remember my kids and ask how they were feeling (they'd gotten sick at the previous resort). They were so welcoming.

The activities staff were so much fun. I felt like at the pool they created nice balance between a peaceful atmosphere and boisterous activities. They organized things like water polo, volleyball, aqua aerobics, bingo, frisbee contests, blackjack, dance lessons, beach volleyball etc. I can't remember the young mans name but he has dark brown curly hair...he kept the atmosphere around the pool very upbeat with his sunny personality.

Our room was a bit small for the 4 of us and it didn't have a balcony. We didn't have much choice on the room options since we were coming from a different resort at the last minute so I'm not sure that this is something I'd fault the resort on. I prefer a bit more space and love having a balcony so that is something I would have looked into had I been booking ahead of time. The room was VERY well appointed though and very modern. The beds were very comfortable too (but I think this will vary from person to person based on personal taste). They room (and hotel in general) was very clean and the cleaning staff did an excellent job tidying our room each day. THey even left an elephant made of towels for our kids...it was a huge hit.

We will definitely be returning to this hotel in the future. Our 3 day stay was just enough time for us to see the pros that this resort offers. We did find that the average age of people staying at the resort was probably in the 50's or 60's but we didn't feel out of place at all. It is a quiet hotel which is on the small side but we loved it.

Room Tip: Most rooms do not have a balcony but there are large windows that let in a lot of natural light. We...

It all started with a call to Idaly (Guest Services) a week prior to arrival to request flowers for my wife for our anniversary. Idaly's service was outstanding, We had ordered an ocean view and we were on the ground floor facing the pool ( great room and location - try to be on the ground floor if possible). When we arrived the room was perfect and the flowers were beautiful. It only got better because of the service and we can't name everyone but Idaly, Eddy and Rosita (housekeeping) deserve gold stars. Isaac on the front desk, Eduarda (bar) and all the servers especially Ricardo and Eddy, The property is exceptionally clean everywhere including the pool.

You can walk the beach for 6-7 km which was exceptionally clean without seawood and you were not bothered by vendors or time share agents. Lot's of lounges available under the huts and around the pool. Every day at 9-10;00am the sun arrived and it was perfect weather. You have to pay for internet (like most hotels) and reception was great. The Italian restaurant was our favorite but the buffet food was fine especially breakfast and the omelettes. Our room was stocked with bottled water, wine and beer.

The one hour massage service was every bit as good as Canada for the price of $65.00. We met Laura, Manager and Jesus, General Manager and it was apparent that they have the staff focused on customer service.

The other plus is this property is only 25 minutes from the airport. We have been privileged to have been in many countries in the world and this property is every bit a 4.5 star headed to 5 star because of the service and cleanliness. If you are looking for entertainment and action this is not the property for you but if you want to chill and relax it's the best. Finally no flies, bugs or ants and that makes the difference.

We will recommend and be back in 2014. Judy & Dave D ,

Room Tip: Try to get an oceanview room and on the ground floor. Their is a lounge bar near the reception that...

We just returned from our 7th trip to PV and our 1st stay at the Occidental. We really enjoyed our visit, and would recommend this resort to "middle-aged" couples, but not for honeymooners or families with children. Upon our arrival, we were upgraded to Royal Club as a result of traveling with Apple Vacations. This was nice, but our room was directly above the very loud and busy construction area. Being the resort was only at 50% capacity, I can't understand why we were issued this room; however, we're not ones to complain, so we just settled in. The room was small, but nicely appointed. However, as stated in other reviews, the lighting in the bathroom is beyond dim. They really need to address this. Also, trying to get extra water is an issue on the "off days". After requesting some bottled water at the front desk, we were told we would have to swap our beers. This was fine with us, but very tacky. We found the food to be good with the exception of one evening at the buffet. The service was exceptional. We loved the smaller size of the resort, and the area on the beach is second-to-none in PV.We would recommend this resort to couples who like to have fun and relax, but don't expect luxurious amenities.

After 19 years, it was time to go back to Puerto Vallarta, and I was not disappointed. The Occidental Grand is a wonderful small hotel, with great service, great food and a wonderful location. We upgraded to the Royal Club which gace us a room on the 6th floor. We were able to have our meals in the private dining room on the 7th floor with the most amazing view of the bay!!!! On our first night, we were the only ones having dinner watching the amazing sunset. The food was wonderful and the service impeciable! We ate lunch at the buffet and at the Mexican restraunts and were not disappointed. We also had dinner (reservations required) at the Mexican and Italian restaurants.
The beach goes for miles and after eating all the wonderful food, it was nice to be able to get out and walk, and feel safe!!!! The vendors on the beach are very respectful and do not pester you, once you have said "no thank you".
I would recommend this porperty for both groups of friends wanting a trip away together and couples.

Room Tip: Upgrade to Royal Club

We are a professional couple, both 50, have visited approx 20+ all inclusive resorts (4* - 5*) and have cruised 5x. For a resort in this class, the Occidental offers a great overall experience and value. In general, the positive reviews here are accurate and the negative reviews range from absolutely ridiculous to petty as the resort has no major flaws and the dozens of people we befriended all agreed.

Things that stood out for us:

1. Beach is amazing, period. We will now stay only in Nuevo Vallarta when visiting the Mexican Pacific Coast just for this beach.

2. Staff are extremely friendly and very attentive everywhere. You do, however, have to get up and get your own drinks at the pool and the beach but nothing is far away, and you need the exercise anyway, lol.

3. The bathroom lighting is oddly dim, which could be a problem for woman especially. You may want to bring a lighted make-up mirror.

4. It would be nice if they had a band in the lounge bar in the evening - but this is just a very personal preference as I have been spoiled by stays at several 5* mega resorts in this respect.

5. The pool was the warmest resort pool we've experienced.

6. Animation team was fantastic.

7. The lack of balconies is odd, but we knew this going in so no surprise. It was the biggest issue for my spouse.

8. We've never felt unsafe inside a resort, but we felt extraordinarily safe at this one given the plethora of very professional looking security guards.

We're anxiously awaiting the outdoor additions.

That's it, hope this helps.

Clay & Donna

This was a very nice hotel to stay at clean and safe. The service was excellent, no lines for food or drinks of course this was during the winter months end of Feb. and early March. The beach was great you could walk forever. Sergio Tamoyo was a big help at the Concierge desk.

We had not been to Puerto Vallarta before and booked this hotel upon recommendations of others. If you love to walk, if you love wide beaches that go on for many miles, and if you want to feel safe, this is a great place to stay. I had been to the Cancun area twice and swore I would not go back to Mexico. This destination and hotel have changed my mind. The vistas from the beach are nothing like Cancun. You have the mountain foot hills to appreciate. We will return.

Room Tip: All rooms have ocean view, some closer than others.
