We just returned from our 7th trip to PV and our 1st stay at the Occidental. We really enjoyed our visit, and would recommend this resort to "middle-aged" couples, but not for honeymooners or families with children. Upon our arrival, we were upgraded to Royal Club as a result of traveling with Apple Vacations. This was nice, but our room was directly above the very loud and busy construction area. Being the resort was only at 50% capacity, I can't understand why we were issued this room; however, we're not ones to complain, so we just settled in. The room was small, but nicely appointed. However, as stated in other reviews, the lighting in the bathroom is beyond dim. They really need to address this. Also, trying to get extra water is an issue on the "off days". After requesting some bottled water at the front desk, we were told we would have to swap our beers. This was fine with us, but very tacky. We found the food to be good with the exception of one evening at the buffet. The service was exceptional. We loved the smaller size of the resort, and the area on the beach is second-to-none in PV.We would recommend this resort to couples who like to have fun and relax, but don't expect luxurious amenities.

After 19 years, it was time to go back to Puerto Vallarta, and I was not disappointed. The Occidental Grand is a wonderful small hotel, with great service, great food and a wonderful location. We upgraded to the Royal Club which gace us a room on the 6th floor. We were able to have our meals in the private dining room on the 7th floor with the most amazing view of the bay!!!! On our first night, we were the only ones having dinner watching the amazing sunset. The food was wonderful and the service impeciable! We ate lunch at the buffet and at the Mexican restraunts and were not disappointed. We also had dinner (reservations required) at the Mexican and Italian restaurants.
The beach goes for miles and after eating all the wonderful food, it was nice to be able to get out and walk, and feel safe!!!! The vendors on the beach are very respectful and do not pester you, once you have said "no thank you".
I would recommend this porperty for both groups of friends wanting a trip away together and couples.

Room Tip: Upgrade to Royal Club

We are a professional couple, both 50, have visited approx 20+ all inclusive resorts (4* - 5*) and have cruised 5x. For a resort in this class, the Occidental offers a great overall experience and value. In general, the positive reviews here are accurate and the negative reviews range from absolutely ridiculous to petty as the resort has no major flaws and the dozens of people we befriended all agreed.

Things that stood out for us:

1. Beach is amazing, period. We will now stay only in Nuevo Vallarta when visiting the Mexican Pacific Coast just for this beach.

2. Staff are extremely friendly and very attentive everywhere. You do, however, have to get up and get your own drinks at the pool and the beach but nothing is far away, and you need the exercise anyway, lol.

3. The bathroom lighting is oddly dim, which could be a problem for woman especially. You may want to bring a lighted make-up mirror.

4. It would be nice if they had a band in the lounge bar in the evening - but this is just a very personal preference as I have been spoiled by stays at several 5* mega resorts in this respect.

5. The pool was the warmest resort pool we've experienced.

6. Animation team was fantastic.

7. The lack of balconies is odd, but we knew this going in so no surprise. It was the biggest issue for my spouse.

8. We've never felt unsafe inside a resort, but we felt extraordinarily safe at this one given the plethora of very professional looking security guards.

We're anxiously awaiting the outdoor additions.

That's it, hope this helps.

Clay & Donna

This was a very nice hotel to stay at clean and safe. The service was excellent, no lines for food or drinks of course this was during the winter months end of Feb. and early March. The beach was great you could walk forever. Sergio Tamoyo was a big help at the Concierge desk.

We had not been to Puerto Vallarta before and booked this hotel upon recommendations of others. If you love to walk, if you love wide beaches that go on for many miles, and if you want to feel safe, this is a great place to stay. I had been to the Cancun area twice and swore I would not go back to Mexico. This destination and hotel have changed my mind. The vistas from the beach are nothing like Cancun. You have the mountain foot hills to appreciate. We will return.

Room Tip: All rooms have ocean view, some closer than others.

After switching resorts last minute from the Barcelo to the Occidental we were hopeful we had made the right decision. The Occidental did not dissappoint. It's quiet, so if you like late night partying, this is not the place for you. The staff were very friendly and happy. The lobby bar is very nice with good appetizers offered 4-6 pm. Carlos and Hugo are very good bartenders and we always enjoyed talking with them before dinner. The beach is great, flat and goes forever. The food at this resort is very good and all of the servers are genuinely happy to serve you. The only beer they have is Corona on tap and they offer most premium bar liqours, you just have to ask for them. It is fairly removed from any type of town but for a pretty resonable fee you can get a cab into Puerto Vallarta or Bucerias where there are lots of restaurants and shops if you like. I would recommend the Occidental and will stay there again.

What great week! We very much enjoyed ourselves and appreciated the small resort experience.
The resort was recently renovated and they have done a good job with what they had to work work. Nice decor, decent beds, very clean! One thing is the rooms and bathrooms are not large. We only found an issue with 2 of us getting ready in the bathroom together....it was small. But even though it was small it was clean and very functional.
The common areas are done nicely with over-sized furniture and plenty of space for gathering. Modern touch without losing Mexican character.
Love love love the lobby bar, the bartender there makes the BEST drinks and fabulous coffee. Nice place to relax and chat.
The pool does not have a swim up bar, a big downer for us. We enjoy just sitting in the pool all day relaxing. The beach/pool bar is only 10 steps away so we didn't complaint to much. The resort could use more pool side staff. One girl or guy trying to serve everyone is not enough. We had many good times at the beach bar, those guys there are AWESOME!!!!
Restaurants were for the most part very good. We enjoyed the fast food at the snack bar, the a la cart restaurants were both excellent, the buffet was good food but was often cold. It's small but has everything you could want, we enjoyed it.
We had no issues with check in or check out, front desk staff were nice and easy to deal with.
The timeshare can be a little much but just tell them your not interested and they go away. Again all were very nice with us.
The bell boys are excellent for information! We wanted to go to town and wondering if taxi or bus was better, they explained it all and got us hooked up with cabs quickly. With our group of and the difference in price the cab was just easier for us.
Beaches are very nice! What a surprise for the pacific coast. Thick, fine sand and miles of walking or running, whatever you prefer.
Entertainment staff do a great job throughout the day without being annoying or overly loud. But the nightly entertainment was cheesy. I have yet to find a resort that isn't.
The very best part of the resort is the everyone knows your name! They knew we were a group of 5 at every meal, knew our drink orders and that, to us, means a lot! It's something that's lost in larger resorts. We even got an apologize from a server one day when they were extremely busy and couldn't get to us quickly. You would have been blind not to see they were trying to keep up but the apology was nice and the extra attention next day was even nicer!
Though we loved our vacation and would most likely will return there are some issues. Yes WiFi is not included. Never thought it would be an issue but since we had sick family home it's nice to keep in contact at all times. This is something so minor that the resort should include. It seems the other resorts all around already do. The restocking of the mini-bar every 2 days is crap! But we managed to find water coolers in both the lobby and the gym. Also you can get bottles of water from the bars. Also the bathroom situation. Not enough of them in public area's and what is there, is small. And oh yes, toilet paper is rough and beds are firm. One last downer is no balcony's. This again wasn't something we thought we would miss but we did. Not something that can change but I would hope some of the other issues could be resolved. A new section is being built next door and that is where I would stay next time.
Again we very much enjoyed ourselves and would recommend to a friend.

Room Tip: Higher rooms have better views. Try and ask for a balcony, there are a few
