“Nice resort on a GREAT beach”
Reviewed February 12, 2013

1st time to this side of Mexico, usually travel to Caribean side. We we a little aprehensive but the only real difference is the color of the water,as warm or warmer than the Caribean side and the beach at this resort is fantastic.
YES! they do try and sell you a time share on check-in,but if you tell them you are not interested that is the end if it.
Rooms were nice but a balcony would be nice.
Buffets are ok,not great, but the selection changes daily.
Service staff in the buffet is great,Thanks to Jair and Jorge!
Beach is great but could use cleaning, people seem to think it makes a good ashtray!
Overall it is a solid 4 star resort.Staff are very helpful.

We stayed at the Occidental Grand from Feb 3-10, 2013. This was our 7th trip to an all-inclusive tropical resort in the past six years, so we have lots to compare to. Our travelling style is to relax and mostly enjoy the beach, and this resort was perfect for just that! In previous trips we have stayed at larger, more complex 5 star resorts so staying at this slightly smaller resort with its intimate and cozy atmosphere was a nice change. This resort offered everything we have come to expect with its larger counterparts.

Service: Absolutely amazing! All the resorts that we have been to have had excellent service, but the Occidental Grand far exceeded each of them. All of the staff were extremely friendly and courteous. The staff at the front desk was always helpful with any questions we had. In the restaurants and at the bars, the staff was very friendly and attentive. With this resort being slightly smaller the staff tended to remember you and what your drink preferences are, and a lot of them took the effort to remember your name. Overall, service was beyond excellent.

Food: Buffet selection was average-sized, but the variety of food was great. There was a new theme in the buffet every night, and we always left with a satisfied appetite. The restaurant staff was always attentive and willing to serve. We went to both of the a la carte restaurants (Mexican and Italian) and we have nothing but good things to say about these.

Rooms/Cleanliness: The rooms were a bit more modern because of the hotel's recent renovations, but it was a typical resort hotel room that met our needs. Our room was cleaned daily, and we never had issues with the resort’s or our room’s cleanliness. Other reviews mentioned the partial glass wall between the bedroom and bathroom/shower, but it really wasn't a big deal. The wall is frosted which allows for privacy, or you can block the glass wall completely with a sliding closet door. Not a concern at all.

Pool/Beach: With us spending most of the time on the beach, we were extremely satisfied. The beach was huge, there were lots of loungers available, and it never felt crowded. The beach was close (but not too close) to the resort so getting drinks or food was only a few steps away. We took many walks up and down the beach that connected to the other resorts, and we can honestly say the Occidental Grand has one of the biggest and cleanest beaches we saw. We spent very little time at the pool but it was never crowded and there was always room available at anytime of the day. The pool did have music playing throughout the day as most resorts do.

Entertainment: Throughout the day, the entertainment team provided plenty of activities. The entertainment staff always asked if we were interested in activities, but were never pushy about it and were always very friendly. The night shows were a good way to spend an hour being entertained, and were fairly interactive.

Atmosphere: There was quite a mix among the hotel guests; while we were there, there seemed to be a lot of families and larger groups travelling together, as well as other couples younger and older.

Overall, this resort exceeded our expectations and was perfect for a quiet getaway. If you are travelling to Nuevo Vallarta and looking for a great value, do not hesitate to stay here.

Overall a good hotel with good staff, food, rooms and beautifull beach. But we had a fourth floor room by the elevators and it was very noisy. The design funneled all the noise up from the lobby and especially late at night the front desk phone and loud partiers were very loud.
As non drinkers it was just abought impossible to get any bottled water and they said you would get 4 bottles every 3 days in your mini bar but that didnt happen. I was told you could get it from the lounge bar but it is only open in evening and I felt like I was begging.

Hotel is right on the beach. Resort is not so big so everything is close. Pools (two, working on a third one) are nice. Even the timeshare sellers are nice. We said no thanks and were left alone. Be warned that the first thing after check-in is an introduction to someone who will "tell you all about the hotel." She is a time-share seller.
Food changes everyday and is really good. Staff is friendly and seem happy although they are there long hours everyday. Our room was updated and it was sooo nice. True it had no balcony. but the end rooms do have balconies. I think they cost extra or are reserved for timeshare members.
one icky thing is that the potty seat in our room was too small for the bowl and your legs will touch porcelin.

Room Tip: dont choose 6th floor if you want to walk up or down. the stairs that are on the outside only go to...

just back from this hotel, feb,10th. 2013. small uncomfortable rooms, poorly built, mould, if you are not a return guest you are treated like a second class guest, if you are a non-drinker be aware that they ration bottled water, i had to buy water at a nearby store, as soon as you arrive the vultures try to sell you time shares in the hotel, the servers and beach are great but thats it. remember the riu is only 2 miles away. i will never return to this dump.

Dear Morgan m,
I sincerely apologize for falling so short of your expectations. I’m surprised by your feedback on the rooms. We just completed an extensive two year renovation which involved updating the rooms to provide a modern and comfortable feel. Our housekeeping team works hard to keep the rooms fresh, cleaning them daily. I have shared your comments regarding the mold with them and they are looking into it.
Serving our guests is of up most importance to us and it saddens me to hear about your negative experience with our staff. Our staff is trained to accommodate all guests and I am meeting with our manager to reinforce this training.
I’m surprised by the inconvinience you experienced with finding bottled water. We offer complimentary alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages from 7 am to 2 am at the bars. We also have bottled water available at the Front Desk and the minibars are refilled every other day.
Regarding your experience with the Occidental Vacation Club, who are the timeshare people you mention, they are meant to make guests aware of the amenities and services available at our resort. I have reviewed your comments with the director of the Occidental Vacation Club, so that we can improve on how information is shared with our guests.
We hope to have the chance to welcome you again to show you an incredible time.

This was our favorite place to stay and we had been there four times previously for 7-day/night all-inclusive vacations. We even coordinated meeting up with eight of our friends this year. After waiting to return to the newly remodeled Occidental Grand (the old Occidental Allegro) for our fifth time, we were very displeased. We felt it should have been named the Occidental Unimpressive. We won’t be returning.

The room has only three drawers for storing clothing like t-shirts, socks, shorts, etc. but it does have a beautiful six foot high wooden closet, without drawers or shelves, used to store the coffee maker, an ice bucket, and a couple of glasses. The bathroom has been enlarged with storage drawers for shaving items, etc. but it is still dark as a cave. The shower has a glass wall into the bedroom area. It has some opaque glass etchings around the waist and chest area but is mostly clear glass. A view from the bed area into the shower area is something I’d never seen before. It also provides a view of anyone using the toilet. It can be blocked by opening the closet door but that is in the bedroom area, not controlled by someone using the bathroom area. Maybe they are trying to attract nudist or perverts. It wasn’t a selling point for us.

We were constantly looking for bottled water in our room. We had to go to the bar several times to get it.

Upon our arrival we were told we could eat dinner one evening as a guest in their top floor restaurant/bar, which is reserved for “special guest” of the resort. We knew Carlos, the bartender, from previous years, and he was working on the top floor. When we went to talk to him we were told we couldn’t be there without a reservation. A man I had talked to by the pool walked into the bar, recognized us and after learning what was going on, he told management we were his guests, but that didn’t allow us to stay either. There was only one other couple in the restaurant and nobody at the bar. We looked in several times before our reservation night and there was never more than two couples eating dinner. We decided we didn’t need to eat there and didn’t bother showing up for our reservation.

Knowing the resort had aggressively pushed timeshare purchase on all new guests, we explained upon check-in, we had been there many times and were not interested in sitting through the presentation or being hounded by the time share sellers. In the past, this only required a different colored wrist band. We were told they didn’t have different wrist bands anymore. That was not true. We were approached many times saying they wanted to tell us about the resort and they had a special gift for us. We told them to give our gifts to someone else, we were very familiar with the resort, and just walked away. I asked to speak to Jesus Aguierre, the resort’s General Manager. We have met him four times previously and also conversed with him via e-mail. We were told he was on vacation and not there.

The food selection was not as good as we remembered before remodeling. The buffet kitchen serving area was much smaller than before. That limited the selection from previous years offerings. Breakfast was the best meal but they need two omelet/pancake/grill stations because of the crowd of people waiting. Of the two Specialty Restaurants, the Mexican restaurant was much, much better than the Italian restaurant, which in previous years had been just the opposite. The food at the Italian restaurant was below average. I would have been happier with something I could chew like spaghetti and meatballs than the lean, tough, grass-fed steak I ordered.

The resort listed WIFI available in the lobby. It was, but you had to purchase a 24-hour pass for 150 pesos (about $13.00/day). The resort did offer WIFI service in the room; but it was even more expensive per day, even when purchasing three or four days at a time. Internet access is so common and the cost to provide it is cheap. All the other resorts I’ve stayed in provide it free to their guests. In my travels last summer I stayed at twelve different places and all but one provided it for free. The hotel that didn’t provide it for free wanted $3.00/day. Because of that, instead of paying to eat in their restaurant, I chose to eat and drink in local establishments with free internet access to check my emails and stock performance. They lost a lot more than $3.00 with that decision. What a cheap way to treat your guests. The Hard Rock resort next door provides their guest free WIFI and if you go to their side of the resort you can connect to their WIFI. It’s a shame Occidental feels they have to charge you for WIFI. Very poor decision. Their living in the past.

The paper towel machine by the pool didn’t dispense for two days. It only needed a battery to detect your hands underneath it. I assume nobody checks to see if they work, only if they have towels in them.

The two or sometimes three bartenders at the beach bar did not walk around the bar to see if anyone needed a drink. They would congregate and talk together in one corner of the bar facing the pool area and you had to physically get up and go to them to get another drink while sitting at the bar. This was true even when tipping when you first arrived. There were hardly any people there the week of December 3rd thru 10th and the pool/beach bar service was very poor, even at night. I wondered what it would be like if the resort were 50 or 75 percent occupied.

One day they paraded the resort staff around the pool area. Introducing twenty or so managers, chefs, etc. They were encouraging applause. This resort has lost touch with reality. You should have been parading the guest around and having management applauding them. Very egotistical. They must not realize their job is dependent on their guests, not vice-versa.

As I mentioned in the beginning, this was our favorite place to stay in Nuevo Vallarta for four years but that has now changed. The Marival and RIU Vallarta, where we stayed while renovations took place at the Occidental Grand, are cheaper, with much larger rooms with balconies, more swimming pools, bars, and night spots (Sports Bar, Disco, pool tables, dart boards, ping pong, video games, etc.) located on location, so give them a look before you decide where to stay.

We won’t be giving the “Occidental Unimpressive” another try.

Room Tip: There are many resorts to choose from with larger, nicer, and quieter rooms. Look elseware.

Dear Russ C,
We truly value your loyalty to our brand, and I am sincerely sorry that your experience in Occidental Grand Nuevo Vallarta did not fully meet your expectations.
Your comments about the renovations in the rooms and bathrooms surprise me since we have received positive feedback about their comfort and design. However, I’m sorry for not reaching your expectations and I assure you that we value your constructive feedback as it helps us to improve upon our high standards for quality. Please accept our apologies in regards to the closets and drawers in room, it is part of our standards to set them up with 10 hangers, and more if the guests need it. Also the minibar is filled with bottles of water and it’s always a pleasure for us to bring more to the rooms if a guest requests it. I have met with the maintenance manager in order to ensure that all bathrooms are well lit.
I’m sorry to hear about the inconvenience at the Royal Club restaurant. This is an exclusive area for guest paying for the Royal Club amenities and it does require reservation, which we have in place to provide an efficient and personalized service.
I apologize for the inconvenience you experienced with the Occidental Vacation Club team; I have met with their manager in order to prevent this situation from happening again. Also, please know that we don’t use different wrist bands for guests aware of the Occidental Vacation Club services.
I’m sorry to hear that you couldn’t meet our general manager Jesus Aguirre, unfortunately he was on vacation however, please don't heistate to contact us directly and we will put you in contact with him.
I also apologize for your disappointment in our culinary offerings and specially about your experience at “Los Olivos” restaurant . I have shared your feedback with our Executive Chef, who works daily to prepare fresh items from high quality ingredients. He greatly values guest feedback. I have also spoken with the Food & Beverage Manager about your comments regarding the buffet stations and the lack of service you encountered at the beach, and he has assured me that he is talking with the team to prevent this from happening again.
Regarding the price of internet, please know that this is provided by an external company and the price is comparable to that at other four star hotels in the area. We are, however, always looking for ways to improve on the price, while maintaining the great connection.
Immediately upon learning about the issue with the paper towel machine, our maintenance team looked into it and fixed it, Thank you for bringing this to our attention. I guarantee you this will not occur again.

My friend and I spent a week at this resort, and the staff were INCREDIBLE!They were genuine and energetic and aimed to please. Our room was fabulous and had an ocean/sunset view. We enjoyed a buffet dinner served on the beach one night, 2 great a la carte restaurants, prompt service for whatever we requested, lots of organized activities and mini contests, and a couple functions in the lounge. Very clean, relaxing, and fun. Would love to go back again.
