We just returned from the Riu Jalisco this evening and felt compelled to post a review immediately in order to save others from the utter HELL we endured while on vacation this past week.

First, we have travelled extensively throughout Mexico, the Carribbean, and Hawaii, and have stayed a variety of higher-end resorts (many all-inclusive). Our expectations were moderate, given the timing of our trip (low season) and the fact that this was a Mexican resort.

Upon arrival, we were greeted by very helpful front desk personnel, and found the ocean-view room adequate. We ventured to the dinner buffet (one of only two dinner options - Italian restaurant was closed during the entire week we were there) to find a variety of mystery meat dishes, long lines, un-replenished food, and unhelpful, i.e. "No English, Senior" speaking staff. We learned quickly that every meal was a scene from "Groundhog Day" - the days would change, but the food stayed EXACTLY the same. Tasteless, cold, and either undercooked (i.e.
pink chicken on one occasion) or burnt and charred beyond recognition (are those really hamburgers???). Lunch was especially trying - a separate grill stand offered hamburgers and pork (I think). The lines often spanned 20-30 people and the chef would only cook 8 burgers at a time. In addition, plan for flies and birds to share your plate. The only decent thing for lunch was the soft-serve ice cream - if the machine was working. You will definitely lose weight here.

We were forcred to venture into town most nights in search of decent cuisine. However, there was noone on staff to offer dining suggestions, so you're pretty much on your own (no concierge). Additionally, the drinks are sub-par, the liquor is lowest quality, and the beer is all draft (they claim it is Corona, but I doubt it.) The best place for a drink is the Lobby Bar, which at least offers a chilled mug with the beer and seems to have slightly better quality liquor.

Turning our attention to the facilities...While the adults-only pool seemed to be nice at first glance, there were children (primarily Spanish-speaking) everywhere and security did nothing to prevent them from continuing to splash, scream, and pee in the water, even though, per the resort's rules, children were only to be in the children's pool. Throughout the majority of the week, empty cups were not removed from the poolside by resort staff and the pool was filled with dead bugs (bees, beetles, other). We expected the pool to be moderately refreshing, especially in light of the 90+ degree weather with 100% humidity, but the pool water was so warm it made you feel like you had to urinate immediately upon entering. And, please be prepared, the bathroom is NOT in close proximity to the pool area. Read between the lines here.

On the third day, we awoke to itchy red bumps on our legs, feet, arms and backs. We discovered bugs (very small ant-like bugs) in the bed, all over the bathroom counter and tiled walls, and a few black beetles on the floor. We called the front desk and they sent a non-English speaking housekeeper who's answer to our problem was to spray our whole room with her can of Raid.

You won't see a wash cloth after the first day, and the shower backed-up severely every day. As there are no clocks in the rooms, we relied on a daily scheduled wake-up call. However, on our departure day, we didn't receive our scheduled wake-up call. We also heard this happened to others who were checking out today as well.

All in all, this is NOT a 5-star resort, by any standard. The rooms are average (without the bugs), the food is deplorable, and the facility layout is less than desirable. While service level fluctuated, Spanish-speaking guests definitely received immediate and special attention. We will NOT return to this resort and hope our review helps your vacation planning.

Overall...this was a great vacation. Our family loved it! Not a honeymooner's paradise but great for families. Staff was extremely friendly and nice. Grounds were beautiful and clean. The kids pool could have used some extra work at cleanliness though. Food was good.
Drinks were good too. The beds are hard but oh well. The in room bar was stocked almost everyday. Housekeeping was always done perfectly. I wouldn't return...been there-done that...but I would recommend it for other families!

My wife, 3-year old son and myself just returned from a 1-week trip at the RIU Jalisco on 8-30-03. We found this to be a great all-inclusive resort. First of all, the room was very clean and was kept that way every day. We found the food to be above average and especially enjoyed the taco bar. The service was very good from the quick courteous bartenders to the free bottled water at the front desk. We enjoyed both the clean beautiful beach and the large family pool. We attended the shows every evening and found them entertaining and fun. The resort's grounds were kept in beautiful condition. The Animacion team kept the children entertained throughout most of the day. I think if you put all of these things together I do not see how you could not have a wonderful time at the RIU Jalisco.PS: The bacon at breakfast was plentiful!

I don't undestand some of the negative reviews seen here. All I can think is that some people are impossible to please.

We just returned from a week at the Riu and it was absolutely wonderful! The grounds were beautiful, the food good quality and plentiful with a large variety, and the employees exceptional. It has a great beach and nice pools.

Their "Animacion" staff (activity and entertainment) worked tirelessly all day long to provide activities for all age groups. There was bocce ball, horseshoes, tennis, soccer, scuba lessons, dance lessons, table tennis, shooting practice (rifle and handgun), darts, beach volleyball, water polo, paper flower making, silly games, and tournaments throughout the week. If you just wanted to relax, there were plenty of lounge chairs on the beach and around the pools.

The Animacion staff also did the nightly entertainment. While it wasn't Las Vegas quality (if we had wanted Las Vegas shows, we'd have gone there instead), they were fun, entertaining, and often involved the crowd. On our last night, some of the hotel serving staff also participated in the late show (9:45 - 11:00 p.m.) Our favorite server, Barbara, did a wonderful Selena routine. This came after working her regular shift at 6:00 a.m. that morning! Yet she was there, bright and cheerful, to serve us early again the next morning. These people worked VERY hard to make our vacation memorable.

We had a great deal through Apple Vacations, probably because this was the beginning of their "off season". That might also account for why there weren't huge numbers of small children around - Mexican schools were already back in session.

The weather was hot and humid, but no worse than August in Wisconsin.
All-in-all, a great place at a great price.

We loved the Riu Jalisco! The food was mostly american so if you are looking for authentic Mexican food, plan to go into town to Pipi's!! Otherwise food and drinks were a plenty! No problems getting drinks. The bartenders were all very attentive and curteous. If you are looking to get a bit wild, at the bars in the entertainment area (especially the one closer to the beach) ask for tequila poppers. Woah yummy! And they are fun to do! The beds were rock hard but that really helped motivate me to get my buns out of bed and onto the beach! The entire staff was excellent! Our toilet clogged (twice) and within 10 minutes they had a janitor there with a plunger. I asked for extra blankets (to try to pad the bed a bit) and right away we had two extra cushy blankets. We left our stuff by our beach chairs while we played in the ocean and never was it touched. The other guests there were also very friendly. A lot of people from a variety of places, it was interesting to talk to everyone. I would recommend Riu Jalisco to anyone!
