The Hotel Monte Leon, near the beautiful Plaza Principal has been recently completed following a complete refurbishment of the property. All new flooring, walls, furnishings, and bathrooms bring this property up to near-US quality and are certainly above-average for your typical hotel in most Mexican towns. This is not a resort-style accommodation, but is a good deal for a reasonable price near a very scenic area of Leon, Guanajuato. Lack of a restaurant is not a problem with a good assortment of options around the Plaza Principal. The staff is very courteous but most have limited English skills, so patience will be necessary.
Accommodations -
The beds are new but the mattresses are placed on a frame without the benefit of box springs, resulting in an extra-firm mattress. New flat-screen TVs with cable access are a nice touch if you watch much TV. The hotel is located on a busy street so if you want a more quiet room ask for one at the rear of the property. The hotel has reliable Wi-Fi available at no cost.
During our stay, we encountered some problems with rain coming under the door during a rather unusual heavy downpour. On only one morning was hot water not available. The rest of the time, hot water was in abundance, which is a feature not always guaranteed at some locations in Mexico.
Within about a 45-minute drive is the beautiful town of Guanajuato with plenty of things to see and do for a local sight-seeing outing. Be sure to take the funicular to the top of the hill with the large statue of a local hero, El Pipila, for the best view of the city.
Overall, the Hotel Monte Leon is a good bargain with reasonable cost and better-than-average accommodations.
