My first Scorpion, and a local guy stuck its tail in a straw, tied it with dental floss, and proceeded to put it on guests and let it walk up their arms. Then the guys took us to an incredible tidal pool where we swam with trapped beautiful fish and played "pop the siduela". All the other guests were German, and at night they sat around and talked about bettering Mexico. And we saw a pig scratching its back on a tree, my sister delighted, because she had only seen that in cartoons. The place was inexpensive, the hosts genial, the nights sultry, and nothing was built between the road and the beach. Of such things are memories made. Amazed that it's still there under the same name.

Room Tip: My lower floor room had the scorpion, and orgasmic neighbors.

The rooms are basic, but comfortable. Bastien and his family made us feel very welcome - I am surprised to see comments about the staff being rude. That was not our experience at all. The meals are really, really excellent - the highlight of our stay. And the dining terrace has a beautiful view of the harbour. The property is well maintained. Puerto Angel is noisy - roosters, dogs, song birds, fireworks, bands playing the street. Welcome to Mexico. I think you will find this anywhere in Puerto Angel. PA is a working fishing village, so the beach is not great for swimming, but it is easy to take a taxi to nearby beaches at Mazunte or Zipolito ($4-10 each way). We enjoyed staying in a real, Mexican town instead of at the tourist beach communities, but if all you are looking for is the beach, go to Mazunte or Zipolito.

The hotel was dirty and owners were rude. We were going to stay four night but could only stay one. We were lead to believe that the beach community called Puerto Angel, 6 hour bus from Oaxaca City, was a "piece of heaven", according to the book. This might have been the case twenty years ago but upon our arrival it was a dirty fishing village with improper sewage system that emptied into the little bay in front of the hotel. Yes, raw sewage into the small bay for swimming and fishing. The smell lingered all over the town. Almost half the beach front properties were abandoned and crumbing too, filling with trash, rats, and stray dogs.

Room Tip: If you are looking for a nice time in the area go north to another town or south into Huatulco.

We didn't stay here but came in the evening to eat. The restaurant is perched on top of the guest house and you get great views over the village and bay. In the evening there are just one or two dishes to choose from but every meal we had was excellent. Succulent tuna, then lobster ( we ordered that specially) The meal is served with home made bread and a great salad. If you want wine it's a good idea to order it ahead of time, especially if it's white and you like it cold. Service is a little erratic but very friendly and helpful.

I didn't stay here but went to eat here for dinner one night and were so impressed that we went back for banana crepes with nutella the next morning. Yum. Stellar views from the rooftop rating areas too!
