We sleep at Villa Escondida, a very nice place, 10 min walking from the beach, on the hill. The owner Giuliana is very friendly, the room are very cleaned and the garden is amazing.

Zipolite" get's under ones skin". Once experienced, it is never to be forgotten !

Zipolite is the perfect place to get away from all of the hectic craziness in the world, a place to slow waaaaaaaay down ...." down South".

Most of the accomadations are rustic, but clean and charming. However," a new wave" of beautiful, top end, boutique hotels are burgeoning.

Although not for everyone, having the option to go totally, or partialy nude on the playa, is a MAJOR plus.... and a free spirited delight !

If relaxing, smiling, eating amazing food, meeting happy, nonjudgmental, international travelers, and having no daily schedule is "your thing", don't miss out on Zipolite !

It may have been a cool hippie place once. Now Zipolite is what happens to most places that are marketed "a hippie getaway" for some time, it becomes a tourist rip-off.

In Mexican terms overpriced, average quality, appalling service and dirty. I don't expect fast service in Mexico, of course, but I have backpacked a lot, and I have never seen so many uninterested, bored, impolite and unnerved locals. We always approached the locals in Spanish, were very friendly and smiled, but always felt unwelcome and like we were disturbing them in their lethargy. Wherever we ate, we waited ages for someone prepared to serve us and another half hour for the ordered drinks, if we got them at all (and the places were never busy), were always charged too much or got too little change back, we rarely heard a "grazias", "hola" or "adios", in most cases it felt as if we were not there.

They don't like you but happily take all your money.

On the positive side, the ocean and beach are indeed great, perfect for surfing, but still not worth the trip.

We arrived late at night, made the mistake of not getting the taxi to drop us off at our hotel. There is very little street lighting and we felt a little venerable. The hotel we stayed in - Brisa Marina, was recommended to us by friends, and we loved it. We had a balcony room, overlooking the ocean. The room was basic, but clean and spacious and host Daniel was a great resource. The beach was stunning, lots of restarants and bars on the sand. Everything was great value. We stayed for 3 dys, but I recommend at least a week. Great for singles and couples, we did see lots of Mexican families as well, but it was school holidays.

I think most people either love or hate Zipolite: we went back and forth.
Pros: -Beautiful beach, beautiful water, a laid-back alternative beach culture, very friendly people in the hotels (esp. Shambala and El Alquemista) and an opportunity to meet interesting fellow travellers on the road.
Cons: -There's definitely an edge here. We saw drug addicts passed out on the stretch of asphalt where the shops are located -cars trying not to run them over. When we arrived, we were aggressed for money by a drunk. At another time, we were threatened with a bottle. It's not really safe to walk in dark places at night. Also, there's a problem finding clean accommodation here. This is not a place for people expecting a scrubbed hotel room: it's a place to string up your hammock and look at the stars. Except it gets really cold at night. Our cabana at Shambala really smelled like piss- it was overpowering. Such a shame because the people working at Shambala were angels. El Alquemista has the best rooms on the beach -they were really lovely, but always booked. Book ahead! and stay there if you decide to come to Zipolite, and you'll have a great stay.
