Not what we expected

3.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed Sep 3, 2013
We went over Labor Day weekend. The place wasn't that busy. It wasn't a bad location to relax and had beautiful views. If they are really trying to sell units they have a lot of work to do. We were placed in a unit furthest away from everything there. While it wasn't bad it wasn't convent to walk to the pool or restaurant. The construction beside the pool takes away from the beauty. Also maybe they should tell you to bring everything you may want. Like coffee and filters for the pot (round ones) and your own shampoo and conditioner. They provide nothing, which is fine, but I didn't think to bring my own coffee. Take lots of bug spray!!!!! Mosquitos are horrible. The food we ate at the restaurant on site was good. Seems a little over priced, but you don't have any other choice unless you want to drive to town. We met some wonderful people from Arizona at this resort and enjoyed talking to them. However, I don't think we will be back to this "resort."

Hi there! I am so sorry to hear about the unpleasant experience you had at Laguna Shores and the very late response. We have renovated and improved so many aspects of the resort and we would love for you to come back and see for yourself. In fact, we have a brand new restaurant opening next month! Again, we take pride in customer satisfaction and we would love to have you back. Thank you for your feedback.

We bought a deal chicken promo for this place because it was a great deal and the first time for both of us in Rocky Point. It was $120 for 2 nights in a 1 bedroom condo including dinner and a bottle of wine. There was a $12 per day resort fee which was fine. With the promo, it was a good deal. Without the promo, I can't see any reason why someone would want to stay here.

We arrived at 7PM and the first thing we noticed was that this wasn't really a "resort". It as more of a housing community that was never completed with minor construction still going on. There were maybe 20 houses spread pretty far apart and a few rows of apartment style buildings .

We checked in at the little restaurant they have by the pool. The restaurant is supposed to close at 830, but the guy said they were closing in 30 minutes so we stayed and had dinner right away. The food was good, especially since it was free. Instead of wine, we each had two margaritas which were also pretty good. The wait staff were very friendly and didn't mind bumping up the tequila level in our second round of drinks. We were the only people having dinner at the restaurant on a Friday night which was nice.

After dinner a guy in an atv led us to our room. The 1 bedroom condo's are INCREDIBLY far from the main resort area and beach. Its easily a half mile away. The 1 bedroom condos are right next to the desalination plant, so it smelled like stinky ocean mud water whenever the air was still. Besides the distance, the room was gorgeous! Nice appliances, nice furnishings and they had cranked up the AC before we arrived so it was ice cold in the room. It also had a pull out sofa bed which would allow the room to easily sleep 4. They had sky satellite tv with plenty of spanish channels and there were a couple movies on in English.

After we got settled, we got in our swim suits and packed a few beers to take to the pool. We walked and it took about 12 minutes to get to the pool. The pool was nice and it was loaded with kids even at 9PM. They were doing construction on a building right next to the pool and it seemed half done. I included a pic. We got in the jacuzzi and it was the same temperature as the pool, but the other people in the spa were cool so we hung out for a few hours. The security guys were cool and let us all stay past the pool closing time which I think was 930 or so.

Saturday Morning we had a really good breakfast at the same restaurant. Don't order a bloody mary, they make them weird. While we were eating breakfast, an employee named Kevin started talking to us. He offered to pay for our meal if we gave him 30 minutes of time to show us around. He was a really cool and funny guy. His sales pitch was no pressure and the suites he showed us were incredible, but the price was not right considering the lack of a true resort feel at this place.

Sunday morning we checked out at 11AM. Check out process was strange. Started at the restaurant and then they sent us back to the room to do a walk through.

All in all, its a nice place to take a family for a quite weekend in Mexico. This is not a party resort by any means. The deal chicken promo and the second free meal made it worth it, but next time, we will stay in actual rocky point where all the action is. Without the promo, this resort is way over priced for what it offers. Honestly, the place was just weird. This resort is about a 20 minute drive from the sandy beach resorts.

Room tip: Choose the two bedroom units as they are within earshot of the pool and restaurant. The 1 bedroom units are a good value, but way too far from the community portion of the "resort".

Hi Elduko! I apologize for the unsatisfying stay you had with us at Laguna, and for the last response. I assure you, we take the utmost pride in the satisfaction of our guests. As for the restaurant, we are set to complete the construction of our brand new beachside restaurant the first week of next month! In addition to this, we have so many amenities and activities that we have put into action since your last stay with us and we would love for you to come and see for yourself! Thank you for the feedback and we hope to see you very soon.

We wanted a beachside resort. You have to walk a quite a bit to reach ocean water and that is if you manage to get through without sinking knee deep in the sticky beach mud. Too far away from everything, too many rules. Just not a fun vacation place to go to. The condo was spacious and clean with everything you might need; comfy beds and two large and very clean bathrooms. But if you want to enjoy the beach this is not the place to go.

We planned a trip to Rocky Point because we wanted a beach vacation and heard great things from our friends about Rocky Point. Laguna Shores had a great special running in the Arizona Republic and Facebook so we thought, beach vacation and not a lot of $ on a place to stay. We arrived in Puerto Penasco and missed the turn off (never been so no idea where to go). turned around and took turn off for Laguna Bay. after the turn off, saw the sign for Laguna Shores. Felt safe the entire time on the roads and while in Mexico. The entrance to Laguna Shores was clear and security was there to open the gate. Drove a mile or more down a smooth dirt road and arrived. So much construction. Houses spaced very far apart. Security met us and let us to the sales office which was a condo made into an office. This was the smaller 2br condos but still very nice. We arrived early so we were given a free round of drinks and sent to Micky's Club. We weren't immediately aknowledged upon entering and felt a little lost. Finally found the person in charge and found out our room would not be ready early(no biggie, our fault for arriving early) so we decided to go explore. Immediately, I asked, where is the ocean. We went to Rocky Point for the beach and yes, there was sand but when low tide hits, wow! It takes over 30 minutes to reach the water, no joke! The pool was huge and beautiful but eventually gets boring for the kids when there are no other kids to play with. There is a new road open to reach Sandy Beach so it's only a 30 minute drive. We checked out Wrecked at the Reef and all the other condos on Sandy Beach. They all have an ocean to swim in, banana boat rides, horse back rides, food for sale on the beach and immediatly I realized, Sandy Beach is where I want to be. OK, back to Laguna Shore...The homes people own on the property are very nice. The condos closest to the pool were bought out by a guy and under construction. Another set of condos are under construction as well. The game room was being built. There are complete condos and our room was huge and beautiful!!!! We were very disappointed because the web site leads you to believe there are lots of activities for the kids but really, swimming is it. There is a putting green and a pit with 4 balls in it(some sort of game but I don't know what) and that was all. A very relaxing resort with beautiful rooms and a beautiful pool, YES. A lot to do, NO. A lot of construction, Yes. Friendly staff and sales people, yes. I did get to Kayak the morning of day 2 when the tide came close enough. The water is about 1-2 feet deep for over a mile. You sink ankle deep into the sand as you walk. I enjoyed going out on the kayak very much but was disappointed when the tide never came in again.
Our sales guy was awesome, Jim I think. So friendly and no pressure during sales presentation.
The spa was in a condo in the same building as the sales office. The gym was in the same room. They didn't open till 11 so we never saw either so I can't give input on the spa or gym. Both are going to be moved next to the pool once construction is finished.
There are big plans and I think once construction is complete many, many, many years from now, this resort will be awesome. Not a place I will visit again because I was so disappointed about the ocean, or lack there of....
