“Quiet Retreat”

We vistited the Mayan Palace 7 times, so far and we will go again. We went mostly by the end of March, April, Oct or. Nov. March can be very Full! December can be too cold. Yes, the food is pricey, so we get prepaid coupons, which we then split, between us two. This way we are always ahead! For one lunch coupon for example, you get an appetizer, a main course and a dessert. But only at the Restaurant by the Pool. So we split that. It is always enough for 2. Yes, some appartments can be a little "worn", but I guess it just depends and it is not too bad. Appt, is spacious and the beds a good now, since they got pads. Everything is kept very well, the gardens, the fountains and especially the large and beautiful pools! The indoor pool is very large, oval, and nice in winter. We like the peace at this place, especially off season. Oct, Nov. There is a german Restaurant in Town, on the left side, before you reach the harbor. It is excellent! The Apple Strudel, is just like in Germany. We like Penasco, because it is low key, and is still, " Mexico"! We drive there, over Tucson, from NM. No trouble, ever.

Room Tip: Rooms to the sea will have a lot of sun in the afternoon, but there are good shades. We like the 3rd...

My family owns a time share here and we visit once a year. My impression of the place is that it is too expensive, too far from the town of Puerto Penasco (30 minutes), and lacks entertainment.

Here is a list of the Pros & Cons-

Pros- Great beaches with tons of seashells
Great food and drinks with happy hour (drinks only)
Heated pool
Kids activites

Cons- Too many stingrays to be called a safe swimming beach
Food and drinks are expensive. $8 drinks and $13 shrimp tacos
No jacuzzi
Too few activities for adults, got bored

My recommendation would be to rent a house in town. Much more going on there, inexpensive, lots of culture, similar beaches.

Room Tip: Stay in town to save a ton of money. If you must stay here, ask for a sea view room.

The place is the same as my last review. Still under construction, lousy cell phone service, meals are way too expensive, internet service is pricey. At least they didn't force a timeshare presentation on us, because I said I wouldn't go.

And the rooms we were in were getting dated. Now the food downtown was great and reasonably priced, but many restaurants are now cash only, no credit cards. Shopping was fine, the weather cooperated, all in all we had a great vacation in Puerto Penasco

We were at the Mayan the second week of December. We were with another couple that physical disabilities and the Mayan doesn't have a elevator which made moving around very hard for them.
It was very cold and windy the week we were there and the first three days we couldn't even walk on the beach because of the wind. The beach is beautiful for walking with lots of shells.
The resort this time of the year was almost empty and there wasn't much going on. The restaurant is nice but very over priced for Mexico. The have a small store which again is really over priced, they know they have a captive audicency

We spent a week here and it felt like home! The airport was so close which made travel easy. The view from our room was simply amazing. The indoor pool was a plus since it rained the first two days of our stay and it was too cold to swim in the outside pools. The only bad experience was the time share sharks the won't take NO for any answer. The rooms were comfy and the kitchen/living room a plus with kids!

Tucked away behind a gated guarded entrance, this resort offers everything you need to relax and enjoy Mexico. The rooms, especially the suites are spacious and have a full kitchen, so it is easy to fix most of your meals. The main restaurant is themed every night and we felt it was overpriced and not consistent. Some stuff was great. Some mediocre and, did I say, expensive? The Pool restaurant was yummy and worth it, though also pricey. The beach is fabulously beautiful. The pool is heated and nice! There are 2 tennis courts with kinda funky surfaces, but few people play and it works fine. It's about 20 minutes into Rocky Point, but once you get here, you really won't want to leave. Plan to relax...the internet is horribly expensive and you shouldn't be doing that on vacation anyway!!! There's a pretty hard sell for the timeshares, but just keep saying no and you'll enjoy yourself. We'll be going back!

Room Tip: Ask for a suite

This resort is lovely, but EXPENSIVE and REMOTE. From the malecon in Puerto Penasco to the parking at the hotel is 26 miles- from the gate on the road, the driveway to the hotel is 6 miles-there is nothing around the hotel except beach- nothing is in walking distance., you will be very limited and isolated if you do not have your own vehicle. Prices at the resort are equivalent to an upscale US hotel. The small shop carries souveniers, a few books and magazines, drinks [ a can of Corona is $2.40],and very few veggies [avacado $1.00 each]. One restaurant- meals about $25.00 per entree- glass of milk $5.00] and a small poolside cafe [small shrimp cocktail $16.00- sandwich $12.00]. Our 1 BR suite was roomy and had a kitchenette [equipped with a bar fridge, 2 burners for cooking, a microwave, toaster, and blender. Dishes, cutlery and pots and pans- basic- enough for 4- BRING YOUR OWN GROCERIES and and drinks. Wifi in your room is $6.00/hr. We traveled from Yuma along the new toll road from San Luis- HWY 197- toll is $8.80- excellent 2 lane road- no traffic- NO amenities along the way- not one gas station, cafe, or rest stop- leave San Luis prepared for a 3 hour drive through the desert. The beach and pools around the resort are very nice. I found the extremely loud Latin music played at the pool to be very annoying- the base turned so high it was rattling in our room- on the weekend went on to 11:30.A three storey building- no elevators

Room Tip: All rooms in Phase 1 face the ocean. We originally were booked into a ground floor room facing the m...
