“Beautiful resort on gorgeous beach”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 27, 2013

The Mayan Palace is located on a huge, expansive beach with miles and miles of shoreline with loads of shells. It is a bit isolated from the main Puerto Penasco, which is great if this is what you are looking for; however, if not, then expect a 30-minute drive to either Sandy Beach where all the other large resorts are clustered, or to the Old Port, which has lots of bars, restaurants, shopping. The grounds are gorgeous and very well groomed. The staff is constantly around the resort ensuring everything is impeccable, as you can tell by the way the resort is maintained.

The rooms are large and clean—we had a 2 bedroom, which was plenty of space for our family of five. The beds were pretty hard and firm, which was okay for me, but maybe not for others. The kitchen was terrible—that would probably be the biggest drawback—tiny little dorm-like refrigerator and tiny little 2-burner hotplate, which made meal preparation pretty much impossible. The food at the resort was awesome, but very pricey for Mexico (American prices). Each room had a large flat screen TV which was great. The cleaning staff left our room spotless every day and left us a new towel animal every day as a surprise for the kids. We did continue to have a fruit fly issue every day, but the staff was very responsive in coming with spray as needed.

The staff is amazing. Every single person goes above and beyond to serve you and attend to every need. They will go all the way out to the beach back and forth all day to bring you drinks, food, anything. Very friendly, genuine, seem truly happy to be working at this resort. The activities coordinators, Nacho, Pancho, and Jessica, are outstanding. They are full of personality and just fun and entertaining. They coordinate activities for the guests all day long into the night—karaoke, volleyball, Mexican bingo, water aerobics, blackjack, trivia night. The Mexican Fiesta Buffet and Show was well worth the money spent –the food was incredible, and the show was every entertaining and a cultural experience. They also have an Eco-Fun Tour company on site that offers boats excursions, snorkeling, and trampoline jumping for the kids. Again, it is pricey, but if you attend a sale presentation you get a bit of a discount off these activities. The boat excursion out to Bird Island was worth every dime. Open bar, lunch, kayaking and snorkeling right off the boat up close and personal with the dolphins and sea lions. Dorali was one of the EcoFun staff on our boat excursion, and she was a lot of fun and highly personable to everyone, which made for a very fun experience.

Overall, we had an amazing experience at the Mayan Palace. It was a great use of our timeshare week. We thoroughly enjoyed it and would go back again.

Room Tip: I do want to caution that you need to insist upon an ocean front or pool front room upon check in, b...

The High Pressure starts as soon as you check in. You are asked to sit down in the lobby (after you check in and do the CC thing) to get your wrist bands. 20 minutes later you have wrist bands and an appt for the "presentation." We had to wait 20 min for one of the high pressure salesmen so we actually spent 40 minutes after a 5 hour drive, with 2 tired kids. Not Cool. While waiting, I poked my head into the empty bar and ordered 2 margaritas. I was charged $20 USD for 2 10 oz plastic cups. The drink prices are crazy. $5 for a can of bud light, or a can of Corona Light. All mixed drinks are $10. The resort only gives 11 to 1 exchange rate but the banks are giving 13:1 exchange. A cheeseburger will set you back $15 US and amazingly, they have no real shrimp dishes beyond a shrimp cocktail. If you want to go to the resaurant, that will set you back $36 for adults and $18 (under 12.) The 90 minute tour took 3 hours and only ends when you threaten to walk back to the resort. You have to sign "NO" more times than you can count, supervisors get called, and you can't imagine the pressure. DON"T DO THE TOUR / PRESENTATION. Bottom line: The resort knows they have you. You are 30 mintues from town and they know you won't go into town. They overcharge for everything. If you want to enjoy Rocky Point, you will won't be able to do that at the Mayan Palace. Oh Yeah, I was booked and paid for a 7 day stay and left after 5 days. I was done with the extortion after 5 days of bad music by the pool, bad service by the pool, and a happy hour policy that requires a printed list of which hour which bar has 2 for 1. And the little "grid" they give you of what activities are happening at the resort just throw it away because none of those activities happen when and where that little grid states. Finally, when I got 2 Mai Tai's with no alcohol in them I decided my $20 for pineapple juice was my sign to head home.

The facility and rooms are outdated, but for the most part, the staff was friendly or at least courteous. Its a VERY chill, relaxing type of setting. Disappointed that there was no Jacuzzi in the pool area OR the indoor pool. The activities were fun by the pool and so was their music! The Fiesta night was not impressive but entertaining enough; however, the buffet food during Fiesta night was ABSOLUTELY delicious! Karaoke was the best part of most nights we came down to the lobby. There isn't much to do in town other than going fishing, dirt bike riding and visiting the old fisherman's port (malecon).
The SPA was amazing for women! Try everything you can and ask for discounts at the lobby with the manager.
Beware of the timeshare presentations - they are pushy by sending you 1 after another sales rep and giving you options to even take docs home and deciding. Owners update is the same sales pitch no matter what they tell you!!!! It was very frustrating! Absolutely wouldn't recommend their sales team - most of them are too young too and didn't really know how to offer you the best of what they have.
The interconnections of the tower facilities are very far apart - so if you go during cold weather, you better cover up!

Having visited mumerous other resorts, I found this place to be a dissapointment compared to other resorts that I've visited in the past. The Mayan Palace was nothing special.
It is located 20 miles out of town and has very few activities for adult or children other than the beach and swiming pool. Restuarant was significantly over priced. Room was only large enough for two adults, even though it was advertised as sleeps 4. Maid service was excellent.
Won't return.

Room Tip: Choose a resort closer to town.

We had a week scheduled at the Puerto Penesco Mayan and decided to check in a couple days late because of work conflicts so checked in on Monday rather than Saturday. One the way into the resort we encountered about 3 miles of muddy roads because Mayan has not put enough money into developing the resort to pave all the road into the resort. This was indicative of many parts of this resort. There rooms are lower class than any of the other Mayan Palace resorts we have stayed at before. There is only one restaurant on the facility and since you are more than 35 minute drive to town, the eating choices are not acceptable. The room was cold and the thermostat was not adjustable so we were NEVER warm. The pool was shut down the day we arrived for maintenance. If you plan on a Mayan, head South and bypass this facility.

Room Tip: Book a room 800 miles south.

Staff was great. Resort and activities were excellent. Don't know why people rate this place low due to the distance from town. Go here to relax and eat. The food was excellent and the service great. A bit cold in February but it could have been hot. Just the luck of the draw.

Room Tip: You will hear furniture moving no matter where you are. We were on the top floor. But it was not a...

We stayed a few days in the Mayan Lakes/Central Park area of the resort and could not be happier. The resort itself was very pretty and well done. The staff was super kind and accommodating. I ended up getting sick (cold) but my family went kayaking in the estuary and loved it. There was barely anyone there which was odd and their is quite a bit on construction at a stand still (common in this area).
