“Restaurnat very good”
Reviewed August 27, 2011

Being a local I have not actually stayed but would like to share my views on the restaurant. My family and I have been to this restaurant on several occassions - afternoon teas and evening meals and can honestly say I have never been disapointed. The staff are very helpful and friendly.

This hotel is tucked away in Calder Bridge in large and very attractive gardens.
It is full of character. Our room was huge, with a king size bed, couple of wardrobes, sofa and a large bathroom attached. The decor is very tasteful throughout. The welcome, attention to detail and service were outstanding. Deserves its high recommendation.

We stay in many hotels and for the money, this is one of the best. The staff are brilliant, nothing is too much trouble. The restaurant is exceptional, the main courses are perfect and it is the first time in my life that I wanted all of the deserts on offer. I finished up choosing the same as my wife, the bread and butter pudding with white chocolate sauce and Baileys ice cream. It was to die for. We would definitely stay here again. Thanks in particular to Deborah who went out of her way at all times to see we wanted for nothing.

Room Tip: Ask for room 2 or if not any of new annex rooms

My wife and I stayed here for 3 nights, and we were very satisfied with the Hotel. Though we had difficulty in finding the place because we don't have 'sat-nav'...the address says it's in 'Seascale' - it's not! - it's the next village 'Calder Bridge' - take the 'Sellafield' turn off to find it, anyway if you are expecting the usual for a 3 star rating, then you wont be disappointed, it's nearer a 4 star in my opimion, the rooms are very nice, with beautiful bathrooms, we stayed in 'The Thirlmere' room, very nice. The breakfast in the hotel is really outstanding with a very wide selection, whatever you do dont miss breakfast - compliments to the chef - We only went B/B and never had a meal in the evening...why?...simple - we couldn't afford it, so I can't comment on evening meals, but I'm pretty sure they are excellent. The staff are very friendly and helpful, the grounds around are massive, take a wander down to the river it's very peaceful.
If you are thinking of staying here, then do not hesitste - I highly recommended the place, and no, I do not know the owners.

This property has lots of character as you would expect with its origins going back 500 years. Our bedroom featured original oak beams and was well equipped and comfortable with plenty of space. The public rooms are clean and tidy but completely lacking in atmosphere - no flowers, magazines, etc and little ornamentation. Our dinner was very good and so was breakast the following day. Chef's own recipe black pudding was the best we have ever tasted. The main problem that we encountered was the offhand and unprofessional service of the hotel staff. The receptionist was almost surly, finding waiting staff to take our meal order was a problem and when a bottle of wine was ordered it was brought, already opened, and simply plonked down on the table. However, service improved dramatically the following morning when the General Manager (Craig) appeared and demonstrated how the restaurant service should be run. This hotel has considerable potential but customer service training must be a priority.

We stayed here last weekend on business and, for the price, were not expecting much. The hotel and grounds are beautifully kept and clean and tidy throughout. We took the dog and she loved the formal gardens that ran down to the river (which has fishing rights) The staff were brilliant....very quiet and helpful. The breakfast was huge and we ate in the evening from the bar menu. It was very good value for money. It made a business trip feel more of a holiday. Would definately go again and would recommend to anyone!

We had only seen pictures of the bridal suite but reading the reviews convinced us to give the place a try. And we are glad we did. Room 3 was large and beautifully decorated with a large bathroom complete with very good shower and lovely old windows. The bed was very comfortable with crisp sheets and in general the room was very clean.

The staff were friendly and helpful and the breakfast was very good, especially the black pudding which was outstanding and home made.

Don't let it being near Sellafield put you off this little gem. It is an outstanding hotel for the money and we would recommend it to anybody.
