“This part of Nova Scotia is absolutely beautiful”

We recently traveled through the Parrsboro area of Nova Scotia and came across this geological wonder. If you are an adventurer and rock hound you have to visit Joggins to take in this incredible centre. We were directed to it via the Signature Attractions website at http://www.signatureattractions.com.

“Should be on your must do list!”
Reviewed September 12, 2009

My husband and I visited Joggins Fossil Cliffs on Sept. 11, 2009 and it was fantastic; a perfect daytrip from Halifax. We checked their web site at http://jogginsfossilcliffs.net/ to see when the tours would be going that day. You have to time your visit to the tides if you want to do the two-hour tour. We arrived mid-morning and wandered around the Interpretation Centre and then took a walk along part of the beach. You should wear sneakers or hikers to traverse the rocks.

We had a great homemade lunch right in the interpretative centre where you can get soup, chili and sandwiches as well as yummy cookies. At one o'clock, with our hard hats on, we headed off for the fossil tour. Because it was a Friday and after the busy summer season, there were only three of us and that made for plenty of time to look at the fossils and ask lots of questions. Our tour guide, Brian, grew up in the area and had been combing the cliffs since he was a child. His passion for his work and his love for the area was obvious.

Between the tides and erosion, the face of the cliffs is continually changing and new finds can happen everyday, so as a visitor you may find something that hasn't been seen before.

This daytrip really was a great outing and my husband, who had just come along to humour me, was actually asking when they open in the spring next year because he wants to go back to see what has appeared over the winter. As I told him, it's a UNESCO Heritage Site for a reason. In short, if you like the ocean, fresh air, good food and the opportunity to learn about the ancient earth from a local expert, then a trip to Joggins Fossil Cliffs should be on your must do list.

“Really worth driving there!”

The museum is interesting.
Nice cafe with good food.

We have not been able to see the fossils on the shore because of the tide. Watch the tide table before going there.
