It was a long drive from Chania. We took the coastal road on the way to the beach (nearly 2hrs), and the sceneary was undescribable although it took longer than mountain road. We took the mountain road on the way back to Chania, and found that the tunnel was still closed and had to divert (follow the sign posts). The last 7 miles to the beach was nice wide road, although the last few hundred meters were rocky but drivable road (I was surprised that there were large-size coaches in the beach car park. How did they get through the narrow mountain road?).

The beach was so beautiful with clear water. It was a bit cold for us to swim in the sea (visited in the middle of Oct.), but some did. Because of no peak season, the beach was not crowded. But we were sure that peak season would be very crowded.

Stay at Elafonissi and you can have the beach to yourself till the buses come. Be sure to visit the island and find the little church.

The long drive to Elafonissi beach was worth the effort we made driving the winding mountain roads to get there. We had read about this beach on Tripadvisor and were determined to give it a try. After arriving from Santorini to Heraklion by Minoan Air (yes there are flights to Santorini from Crete) we drove all the way to Elafonisi with a rest stop at the Lake Kournas for so lunch and relaxation at the lake. Then onward to Elafonissi beach. In all it was a very long trip but we were thrilled by what we saw when we arrived. Unfortunately it was late afternoon and we still need a room somewhere so we stayed at the hotel whose name eludes me but is closest to the beach. Next day we enjoyed a day at the beach even though the wind was a bit of a hindrance. I am certain giving the right weather conditions the beach is idyllic especially for parents with kids. Its worth staying a few days to really take full advantage of this beach. Sun umbrella and two sunbeds cost 7 euro . Showers are free and toilet use costs 50c
Definitely recommended for those who enjoy beach side relaxation.

Do not stops when you arrive the beach, the best part of it is after the small strip of sand, where you can find small private beaches.
