“7 Days at the Palace Feb 6-13, 2014 It's fine”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 18, 2014

I had no complaints whatsoever about the resort accomadations. We stayed in the Oaxaca building which is the closest to the beach area, Club Premium. Yes, there are palm trees obstructing the ocean view, but what do you expect? We were on the second floor, room 8517, other family members in 8525 and we were all very pleased. It was our first time at Barcelo Palace as we normally book Riu Palaces but we were not disappointed with anything other than the bogus resort credits. They provided us with $3000 in credits each room but they are specific credits for example Ihink we received 6 coupons for $10 off a bottle of wine but they sell the wine for $100US. They are all just a waste of paper so don't count on them for anything, it's not added value! The beds were hard but having spent the day in the sun, beach and beautiful pool, it was just ok. Food is excellent, no worries. The only other comment I would make which is no reflection on the resort, is that we booked this trip with an agent at Travelocity who apparently forgot to check off the airport transfers box on the booking which left us stranded at the airport and having to take a taxi for $120USD. Not impressed! We called them once arrived at the hotel and they told us that we could submit the receipt and if they did in fact make the error, they woudl offer compensation. Too late Travelocity, you messed up and next time I will bok via another provider.

Room Tip: Anyhting in the 8500 or above is great!! Oaxaca building

We are a pretty easy going 50's couple, not picky, not complainers, so found everything here a very positive experience. We stayed Club Premium - rooms are nice, food is good at all ala cartes and buffets, they free pour the drinks so you won't be disappointed. Service is good all around and staff is very friendly. Big beach, good snorkelling - If I was to go into detail I would point out most of the good things previous reviewers have mentioned. My only advice is that if you want peace and quiet with a Club Premium stay, you MUST stay in the Oaxaca building - it is the closest to the beach - with nothing but palm trees and beach in front of it. The Michoacan building is in front of the pools, and the kids pool is also in front of part of the building. Once 9am rolls around, the fountains fire up and the kids come out to scream and play - untill 7pm...it was the ONLY complaint I had, and that was all for a lack of information/research on my part - figured I'd post it here for any others that don't want all that noise in front of their room. We're not late sleepers, but we like to sit on our deck late into the morning and enjoy coffee, the view and the sound of the ocean - impossible in the Michoacan building. This is a VERY kid friendly resort...I think Barcelo needs to have an adult only hotel on the property because they are losing alot of the 'adult' market share. The adult pool was always lacking chairs so in a 9 day stay, we never sat at any of the vast array of pools available to us - they were either full of noisy kids, or there was no chairs available. Not a big deal as the beach was a great alternative, but if you want something away from kids, this is NOT the place to go.

Room Tip: If you stay Club Premium, beware that the rooms in the Michoacan building are very noisy all day lon...

nice hotel, grounds, beach etc..but vacation was marred by infant crying every night in next room. Immediately tried to change rooms when we first checked (infant was having his afternoon cry) but was told they could only do something the next day.Next day was told to vacate our room for the day but was given an inferior room at back of hotel.Decided to stay in original room because it was close to the beach and people with infant in next room were checking out the next day. The following day woken up at 2 am by new guest with new baby. Parents go to bar and leave children un-attended in room. This hotel is fairly large and should be able to accomodate guests who are travelling without their children and might want a semblance of an adult vacation. Not asking for much, just a little sleep between 1;00-6;00 am. Hotel seemed relatively empty ,Cannot believe that they havent' figured out how to not alienate adult travellers-will most probably look for an adult only hotel even though I have teenagers and they would like the place. Too bad.

Loved the setting and the beach was awesome. I was worried about the food, but there was plenty of selection and a great selection of fresh fruits and meats and even pasta and eggs prepared the way you like. Desserts are not the best. It was very disappointing we had a hard time booking times at the special restaurants and they did not mention that we could eat at the Mexican restaurant in the other section.
Thought the place was very clean but our room had a very musty smell that actually made us turn up the fan so I couldn't smell it as much. As I was unpacking my suitcase when I got home i could smell it on my clothes a lot. I wish I had taken my scented candles, that could have helped.
The excursions were fun, and as a tip, take your snorkeling equipment if you love to snorkel because you can only rent theirs for an hour at a time free. The snorkeling was really great off the beach. Saw as many fish and coral as on the trip we paid for. Also saw two Loggerhead turtles right where we were swimming.

My biggest complaint about the place was that the entertainment was stale..not great at all. They need a good dance show or burlesque (in good taste) or a magician, just something that is entertaining.

The drinks flowed, the food was good and the beach was excellent. That is what I go for. I would always love a sleep number bed in my room because the beds were slightly uncomfortable, that would have been a special treat. Over all we give this a Very Good and would recommend highly.

Great flight, transport from airport to Barceló could not have gone better. Stayed in the Oxaca building, third floor. No problem, has elevator. Walking to dinner is no big deal. Food and service were excellent, could not have asked for better weather. Not crowded at all, never saved a chair, had abundance of shade and sunshine. Small glitch in our dinner reservation for the last evening in the French restaurant, no big deal, they made accommodations and it was probably better than it would have been originally. Just an excellent week.

Room Tip: Oxaca building is close to pools, beach, great location, quiet.

We stayed, and mostly ate, at the palace deluxe, which is a section exclusively for people staying at the palace deluxe. If your staying at the palace deluxe you can utilize the entire resort, all the restaurants, pools, bars, and activities. Our resort was immaculate in its presentation. The halls/pathways had beautiful fountains, statues, artwork, and landscaping. Maybe everything in the buffets weren't cooked to perfection but there were so many options per buffet you could always get a very good meal. The restaurants you needed to book, that had a dress code, were really a great meal and dining experience both. The beach was nice, a long stretch to find a spot to suit your needs. The sand wasn't the softest sand I've ever been to by any means but still had good spots for beach volleyball and beach soccer/football. There was a nice snorkeling spot right off the beach so if you like that, bring your snorkel as the beach is so long you might be quite far from the scuba shack. They do provide free snorkeling gear buts its more convenient to bring your own. We saw sea turtles, sting rays, and some colorful fish just off the beach as there is some coral not far. This is a great resort for both families and singles alike. They have so many activities for the kids and the pools are so large it really doesn't matter if your if your with your family or just some friends.

Only downside is its about an hour from the airport and they charge for transfers, which I thought was disappointing for an all inclusive, I've stayed at other all inclusive resorts further from airports where the transfer is included. If you want to golf there are other resorts closer to the golf courses that would make it easier if golfing was your #1 priority.

Room Tip: The pool rooms are more expensive and very close to where everything is but it was kind of nice to b...

When my family first got there, we reserved three rooms, the front desk told us we were getting two double beds, even though we asked for king beds,. She told us there were none available, to check back in the morning. She did try to push upgrading to the premier club where we could get a king size bed, for approx. 900 $ U.S.D. more. We refused and took our double beds. When we got near our rooms ,we noticed our concierge, Jazmin Suastegui, we told her off our situation and she was polite, professional, and courteous. Amazingly she was able find us three rooms with king size beds, even right after the front desk said there were none available.Jazmin was amazing all week long assisting us on reserving restaurants and any other thing we needed, especially when my in laws flight was cancelled do to bad weather in the USA. Jazmin went beyond her duties by calling their travel agent and airline. she was able to contact both and reschedule their flight and also was able to have them keep their room at the hotel. We can't say enough about Jazmin, people like her are what makes us want to go back to the Palace Deluxe. I would also like to say that their General Manager Armando Becerra was also very courteous and professional. We were very impressed with the hotel. The pools and beach were amazing the food was excellent, and the drinks were not weak. Except for a first Impression, with the front desk, I would highly recommend this resort. Thank You Jazmin Chris and Michelle Praschak
