“Excellent Hotel Best Hotel Ever Stayed In”
Reviewed October 25, 2013

I stayed in the Maya Tropical from October 4th to 18th october with thomson holidays, we origionaly booked in the Maya Caribe but the hotel has closed down for a referb and re build.

Had a excellent time, the hotel is the best i have stayed at, the rooms were clean and spacious, hotel grounds were kept imaculate, the beach and the pool you cannot fault.

In the rooms you get a mini bar that is restocked everyday with 2 corona beers, 2 coca colas, 2 coke diet, 2 fanta, 2 sprite, 2 bottles of water, 2 orange juice and some nuts, this is good but in a couple of occasions were given corona cans with 2011 advertisment on that would make it out of date.

The weather was amazing, the pool and beach always had sunbeds avalible any time of the day, pool bar was a bit busy at times but have a tip in your hand and you will be seen quickly, they offer 1 hour free snorkling on the beach which is good to jump off the peir and swim with the tropical fish.

The food is amazing at the hotel, included in our stay we were given 9 a la carte invitations, resturants are seafood, italian, steak house and japaneese, the buffets are to a high standard too.

The only 2 things that let this hotel down is that the evening entertainent is soooooooooo boring nothing that was on interested us, throughout the 2 weeks were there they altenated between, the perfect couple, battle of the sexes, and cuban dancing. the second part is that the pillows in the room arnt that comfy

But all in all with definatly recommend this hotel and will visit again

Room Tip: ask for a room with a balcony the terrice rooms look quite open

My travel group(12) is visiting BT again on Feb14 and can not wait. We have been a number of times and it never disappoints. From the great food to the beautiful grounds ..it is great. We have never had a bad experience. I fully recommend this as a wonderful place to get away from our COLD Canadian winters. The staff works very hard to make our stay the best. Always remember you are on holidays....nothing is that important that it has to be in 10 seconds. Just lay back and a have great MEXICAN vacation. And when you feel the service was not quick enough ...think about the last time you were in an 20 minute line up at TIM's and thought about a relaxing vacation in the sun. Enjoy....we did! We all voted and it was a 5 star for us!!!!!!!

This review is a little late. I could not put the proper date in since the dates only go back to 2012. We stayed at this resort in January 2010. This was our second time staying at the Barceló. The first time we stayed at the Colonial in 2007. We prefer the Colonial or Tropical but would not stay at the Maya or Caribe sections since we prefer the air conditioned buffets and the Maya and Caribe buffets are open air with ceiling fans. The resort is Beautiful. Very clean. No bugs! The grounds are immaculate and very lush. The pools and beach are beautiful. Food is very good. Shows are good. It's paradise! We would definitely return to this resort. Our room was on the second floor in the Veracruz building.

Room Tip: We like rooms on the second or third floors.

My husband and I along with 2 other couples stayed for 5 nights/6days and had a wonderful vacation! I read tons of reviews before going!
It took 1 1/2 hr to get to resort from airport...made 2 other quick stops along the way! Upon arrival we were not greeted with a beverage ...actually noone spoke to us till into our rep from Olympus tours came over and then she took us to ck in...The young guy working at front desk was very friendly..(previous reviews said front desk staff was rude) Def not the case..check in was a breeze and we were off to our room..1st floor yucaton building...we were close to main lobby/restaurants/bar/theatre...the pools and beach were less then a 10 min walk away...loved our location!!! Rooms are spacious..nice to have the sofa and extra space when traveling with friends. Mini bar stocked everyday! The rooms however could use some updating and yes the mattress is very hard!
The pools and beach are beautiful..this is not a busy season so we never had trouble getting sunbeds any time of day..we hung out mostly at tropical pool bar where they have music and entertainment... my favorite bartender was Javier Aka J Dogg..(pool bar) he took great care of us and was a lot of fun! I do feel that they could do a little more entertainment by the pool...more crowd participation games etc..
We did not get to snorkle (bummer) because we put it off and we had rain the last 2 afternoons of our stay!
Food...the specialty restaurants were very good...(we got 2 for our length of stay) reservations were made our 2nd day for whole trip! The buffets were good however I would like to see even more choices! Not gonna comment any more on food because everyone has there own taste.
At night there is plenty to do...the theatre shows were great (ones I seen) also after the show the bartender will do an awesome domino effect with shots! There is also a piano bar with late night snacks on the colonial side...the disco jaguars is a very nice place however never got to busy during our stay not many dancing...but we still had fun! We did go to CocoBongo one night for my husband's birthday and had a blast! We booked this right by the pool with coco bongo rep...
They have a lot of shops in the plaza for souvenirs etc however we took a cab downtown 6 people/$30 total..we did all our shopping there for cheaper prices and it was nice to see downtown playa del Carmen..
The day before arrival was my anniversary the first night they delivered a small cake with bottle of champagne. On my husbands birthday a lot of the staff made him feel very special... they sang HB cpl times throughout the day!
Everything about this resort was beautiful...the grounds...the pools...the super friendly staff!
My one and only complaint (nothing the resort can fix) was the other travelers...most were very rude! We are the type to smile and say hola to fellow vacationers when passing in the halls and walkways or sit next to someone at the bar...most would turn there heads and not respond...not used to that where I come from ..but to each there own!
So all in all my only complaint would be a much nicer welcoming with drink ready when arriving!
We will def be returning to this resort...looking forward to 2nd trip when the beach/caribe are open back up and we have even more resort to explore! Don't listen to the negative reviews... this has been my favorite mexico resort by far.. a vacation/stay is only gonna be as good as you allow it to be! Don't dwell on petty minor things and you will have a fabulousl time!

Reviewed October 18, 2013

Firstly me and my fiancé and two friends visited Barcelo Maya Caribe three years ago and had the most amazing holiday we could have ever imagined and this year decided we wanted to re visit Mexico again and book the same hotel. We booked at the beginning of the year to stay in the caribe and couldn't wait to be back! In august after reading reviews I noticed a lot of comments mentioning construction work in the beach and caribe which worried us. I began questioning Thomson who kept denying any work happening at the hotel. Eventually after weeks of wanting answers we were told the beach and caribe was shut until next year, we were absolutely devastated. Thomson then assured us that we would be upgraded to the tropical which at the time seemed to good to be true, so we didn't get our hopes up and was nervous at the thought of arriving at the hotel.

When arriving at our hotel the coach took us straight to the tropical which we were really excited about. We were greeted with a lovely glass of champagne which went down very well after a very long flight from manchester. Checking in took around 10 minutes max which really surprised me as I did expect some complications as we didn't originally book for this hotel. We were given a lot of coupons for money off lots of things at the hotel which did come in handy throughout the holiday! Also we were given 10 coupons to visit the different restaurants in the colonial and tropical. Staff are extremely friendly and from the moment we stepped foot back into this hotel we knew we made the right decision to come back :)

When making our way to the rooms the views throughout the hotel were just perfect. Everywhere was well maintained and looked very clean just as we had remembered. Our rooms were literally 5 minutes away from everything.. The reception, the buffet restaurants, the pools and the theatre! We were expecting the worst located rooms ever as we hadn't originally booked here and we didn't have to pay any extra for the upgrade.

The room we had was on the ground floor which I wasn't to keen on but as the holiday went on I got used to it. The views of the gardens were beautiful well looked after I don't think there was a day that we was there that we didn't see a gardener tidying the very tidy gardens! The beds are very large and comfy again just what we had witnessed three years ago, living area very large with a sofa, table and dressing table! The only downfall which only affected my fiancé was the tv in the cupboard..when we stayed in the caribe it was a flat screen on the wall with a brilliant picture, this tv was like something from the 90s with a rubbish picture. But to be honest who goes on holiday to watch tv? The bathroom was amazingly spacious brilliant shower and bath. They provide a hair dryer on the wall which is quite small but I managed perfectly fine and I have really long thick hair! Large wardrobe where you will find you iron on ironing board also the safe!

The pools at the tropical are very large and clean and from what we saw the colonial were the same. Plenty of sun loungers morning and afternoon so no need to get up early to guarantee a place by the pool. Pool bar staff are very friendly same as the daytime entertainment staff especially Emy she was lovely always smiling and stopping for a chat. Always plenty of activities going on at the pool and beach and they always try to get everyone involved. The beach is just perfect!! :D Again plenty of free water activities you don't be disappointed! On the reviews that moan about the noise from the construction the only possible way you could hear the noise would be if you stood next to it. We didn't hear a thing all holiday!

Buffet restaurants brilliant, excellent choice of food and never got bored. Waiters were brilliant always there to take an empty plate fill up your water or to offer more drinks. Although at first we did feel a little uncomfortable as in the caribe you were a bit more free and able to get you own drinks and wasn't seated you would find your own table. But again that's not a complaint just something we wasn't used to and did appreciate a lot although same can't be said for other guests at the hotel who were just rude and would have there food fed to them if they could. In the two weeks of staying here we only visited the steak and Italian restaurants as we enjoyed the buffet restaurants very much. Again brilliant food and service and it was lovely to have a change.

We booked our trips through our rep which was Thomson. We did coco bongo for the second time for this I would recommended VIP as you get to sit down and seethe shows properly. Otherwise you will be stood on the ground floor getting shoved from one spot to another. That aside great shows brilliant service and a very memorable experience :) we booked the silver dolphins package which is one of the best experiences we have ever done! Would highly recommend but make sure you take plenty of money as pictures and videos are quite expensive.

My fiancé booked for us to have a four course meal on the beach which was beautiful candle lit down the beach and around the table where we were seated to eat. They had music playing with the sound of the waves in the background. Very romantic!! My boyfriend proposed which made it extra special but even without that it was stunning. You have your own waiters one being a manger who was lovely very friendly. After this every time he spotted us eating in the buffet he would come over to congratulate us again and to make sure everything was ok. He was one of several members of staff who work extremely hard to provide you the best service possible.

After our second visit to the hotel I'm excited to be booking for a third visit next year, we will most likely book to stay at the caribe as we found the guests at the tropical are very rude and unappreciative towards staff which was annoying to watch. Also they don't believe in queuing at breakfast or dinner they think they can't just walk to the front. Thankfully the staff don't allow this and send them to the back.

We would 100% recommended this hotel :D

Went there because some friends went to Barcelo Maya Colonial and they recommended it. We showed up, and they said we were at Tropical instead. It wasn't a big deal. The staff works hard, but I think they are a little bit understaffed. The buffet I thought was bland, the most top shelf they got is shrimp/rack of lamb; but I gained 4 lbs so what do I know. Their 'restaurants' were a little better, they served lobster and steak, but they weren't mind blowing. The shows at night are nothing to write home about but they're free. The beach was beautiful as were the pools. The staff was friendly, but overmatched. You had to wait a while for the front desk people to get to you.

Room Tip: request a room closer to the beach.....going to the food all you're carrying is your room keys...

It's tough giving the Barcelo Tropical just 3/5 and rating it "average" because honestly - I thoroughly enjoyed my vacation there. However there are two reasons that I took 2 stars away.

1: There's just some things that other resorts do better. A few examples:

- $50 wifi for the week that only works in certain areas and drops often requiring you to reconnect. I've stayed at many other resorts where it was free wifi and worked everywhere.
- Room service. Quite a limited menu and each item cost $90 pesos to order, compared to 24 hour room service elsewhere, or room service without fees.
- Poor awareness of events. There was one notice board I found at the pool area listing the events that were occurring over the week for example and everything was very vague. I've been in resorts where they would provide a daily newsletter and that was a big difference maker.
- Very slow at reception. The rest of the staff were amazing, but checking in and checking out was an incredibly slow process and frustrating both on arrival and leaving the resort.
- Kids meal selection was weak. The buffet on the beach had hot dogs/hamburgers at lunch which the kids loved - would've been nice to see those at the regular lunch or dinner buffets.

These were all minor issues - no dealbreakers - but they all add up just enough to take a star away.

2: One of the biggest features they advertise is that the Barcelo Tropical is part of 4 other resorts you can visit(not including the Palace). However when we got there, we learned that 2 of the resorts were closed for maintenance. This was frustrating as it meant features that we were looking forward to(such as mini golf with the kids) wasn't available. If this had been communicated to us prior to arriving then that would be fine - but it's very misleading when they advertise the ability to visit all these other resorts and all these other features and they end up not being available.

Okay so that's the negatives out of the way. As I said - I really enjoyed this resort and will be going back. The true assessment is 4/5 but that maintenance issue was a downer. Here's just some of the many positives:

- Not too busy. Could be because of the season of course, but it was nice never having to worry about getting down to the pool or beach early to reserve seats. We strolled there - 9 of us - at around 11am each day and never had a problem getting poolside seats, or sitting in top spots along the beach.
- Great staff. All staff very friendly and helpful.
- Awesome water park for kids. They loved it and had a blast here.
- Very solid food selection. We didn't bother with the restaurants, just did the buffet. Breakfast was my favourite - amazing omelets and just a huge selection of food. All staff were so friendly and fast at making whatever food you wanted and there was never any language barrier issues.
- Very accommodating. There was 9 of us and they easily accommodated us at the restaurants every time.
- Beach was amazing. There was some rocky areas but that's to be expected and it was clear to see. Can swim with the fish off the pier, go snorkeling etc. Really awesome.
- Great hot tub(for free) in the spa area. Most people didn't seem to know about this so a nice little hideaway!
- Beautiful scenery all over the resort.
- Shopping area right on the resort. I usually go shopping off the resort but it was nice not to bother with that this time. They had a great selection and although bartering didn't happen there the prices weren't too bad, and it was nice to have a mini-mall to browse.

I've seen some people mention moldy air conditioning smell. I can confirm we had that in our room(although our friends one floor up and a few rooms down didn't have it). However it's honestly not bad - you'll notice it when you enter the room after the A/C has been on for awhile but it soon goes away.

I thoroughly enjoyed this resort, and will be going back in the near future for sure. It was both accommodating for families AND adults. I had assumed with the water park etc that it would be mostly families here but I saw maybe 15 other kids the whole time. So if you're not a fan of kids don't worry you won't run into many here :)

Room Tip: Yucatan building facing away from the theatre on the ground floor. You'll see quite a few exoti...
