Reviewed August 31, 2011

Last year we went to Punta Cana because of safety issues in Mexico, but this year we decided that Maya Riviera - which we usually visit once a year - was ok. We took our normal vacation, hiking through the jungles, climbing pyramids, scuba and snorkeling and exploring caves, and found so many new things to do that we are already planning next year's trip. We feel EXTREMELY comfortable in the Barcelo resort complex on the Maya Riviera and have stayed in the Colonial and Tropical.

We were very disappointed to note that apparently someone neglected to put their money in the safe when they left their room and were victims - HOWEVER - we have the OPPOSITE STORY. During our trip from July 26-August 4 - we inadvertently left the safe OPEN when leaving the room to catch a tour pickup. I have to admit, I fretted about that all day long, but when we returned that evening I was delighted to discover that: 1) the housemaid discovered the problem and placed a note at the safe, reminding us to store all valuables in the safe and close the safe, etc., and 2) she put a DO NOT DISTURB sign on the door so no other hotel staff would enter the room and be tempted. We had our passports, some cash, cameras, etc. in the safe and the maid's honesty was rewarded the next day, and we left generous tips the rest of the week! This is one reason we feel so comfortable at this resort. Not everyone is so honest, I would assume, but everyone we have met there on our several stays has been friendly, earnest, and honest.

So what did we do this trip? Well, we went snorkeling at Xel-Ha for half a day, which was more fun than I expected because I'm a scuba diver. We hiked and swam in the exquisite caves at Rio Secreto which is only about 20 minutes away from the hotel - they have three routes open and one is always kept closed for a month to let the caves "recharge" and to avoid stressing the fragile ecosystem and wildlife (blind fish, bats, spiders, etc.). Take some extra money to buy the photos, which are not cheap but are really dramatic!!

Spent a day on the Rio Lagartos tour - not really a river but looks like it - Rio Lagartos is actually a series of lagoons adjacent to the Gulf - saw a crocodile, lots of flamingoes, birds, and as part of the same tour, we climbed the Acropolis at Ek Balam, one of the best preserved and most recently excavated pyramids/complexes in the Mayan Yucatan. We climb a different pyramid every trip and this was a real thrill, a bit dangerous, breathtaking view, etc. When you are above the jungle, you can see what look like green mountains or hills in the distance - these are some of the 100,000 sites that have not yet been excavated.

We ate in the seafood restaurant a couple of nights, the steak restaurant once, mostly ate in the buffet. We are not picky eaters and always found something really tasty to eat. We avoid foods that are too watery, so we seldom encounter problems with digestive effects. In about 10 trips to Mexico over the years, I think I've been sick twice, and always the last day of the trip, but not too serious.

We got some GREAT computer wallpaper photos at Ek Balam and many other places, including everything from pyramids to flowers and animals. I snapped lots of wildlife photos on the tours and got some great shots of birds around the Barcelo complex - too many photos to include here but I add a few shots I took of various types of animals. The sereque (see photo) looks like a rodent on stilts, we also saw a large paca once that ran across our path - the paca which looks like a pig with a rat's head. Lots of iguanas and those frilled basilisk lizards that run on their hind legs - so funny!

I'll include a few photos. My wife and I like adventure trips and being in the Mayan Riviera gives us access to most of the best locations, so we're never bored, and the tour operators and hotel staff make everything convenient. It's especially nice to be able to go out and adventure and return to an all inclusive luxury hotel. My wife had a facial in the spa.

We love the Barcelo complex and will return again next year.

On my first day after the check in at 8pm , i went to have dinner and in a matter of 2 hours when I got back, someone entered in the room and took all the money of my wallet, open my friends purse and took all her money also. "Security" was no help at all. Service sucks, you had to ask for everything more than once.

We stayed there for a wedding, and on that night (8/27/2011) they got into the room of a friend to take their money as well, even though they had it inside the safe, we were shocked to see that they had all equipment to open every safe in the hotel.

I would never go back to that hotel. They charge for the wi-fi btw

We stayed in the Barcelo Tropical section with our 10 &12 yr old daughters. There is a difference between the sections for sure. The beach & Caribe are lower end with open air buffet. I would definetly recommend the upgrade to the Tropical or Colonial section. We noticed that this entire resort is very wheelchair friendly.Thought that was kinda cool as there are not enough good resorts out there that offer facilities for folks who get around via wheels instead of legs.I also noticed that they have a couple of scooters for rent in the main lobby for those who need a little extra help getting around this mega resort. We did alot of walking to and from, here and there.Lots to explore, pools are big and right beside the beach.Nightly entertainment was geared towards family but a couple of adult nights too. The kids loved the small waterslides in the resort, pretty nice touch.Right across the highway from Barcelo, there are multiple cenote's to explore. My favorite was Cristallio cenote.Small but filled with the "Garra Ruffa" fish and a cave to snorkel through.

Room Tip: Get a room that faces away from the entertainment complex. It gets loud at night.

We have been traveling for years and have stayed at many different hotels and have
never taken the time to write a review until now. We immensely enjoyed our stay and anxiously anticipate our return to Barcelo next year . The grounds, pools, fountains, and beach were all spotless. We stayed in the TROPICAL bldg, our room was great ( yucatan bldg, 3rd floor ) The beach was one of the best we have ever seen and never a problem finding a chair. Also IGNORE any negative reviews , they are simply not true, some people just love to complain !!!! Everything was positive from our transfers with BEST DAY TRAVEL to our visit to the ruins at tulum, also with best day located right in the TROPICAL lobby. We ate at the steakhouse and the japanese restaurants, both very good ,our remaining nights we kept it simple and ate at the buffet which was excellent and also has a huge variiety, something for everyone. the desserts are delish !! The grill at lunchtime was just as good , make sure you get an ice cream cone from the machine, very yummy. Saving the best for last, a shoutout to a few of the greatest staff anywhere, DARWIN, ALEJANDRO MENDEZ, PEDRO, LUIS AND MR. JULIO JIMEMEZ, THANK YOU GUYS SOOOOO VERY MUCH FOR EVERYTHING . iF YOU ARE READING THIS IT IS " MR AND MRS GUANABANA " Barcelo management should acknowledge these staff members and do whatever it takes to keep them !!! Also note to all americans , these people are underpaid, work in extreme heat and always have a smile. All inclusive does not means that you do not have to tip, If you cant afford to tip the staff , then you should STAY HOME !!! THANK YOU AGAIN BARCELO, WE WILL BE BACK AND WE CANT WAIT !!!!!!

Food was great. Kids loved the buffet ! Our kids were all teenagers and early 20's. Stayed for 7 days and there was always something to do. We did all the activities the hotel offered and we enjoyed them all. The staff were all very polite ,friendly and very hard working. Both of our families felt safe at all times. The beach and pools were spectacular!! You could snorkel right at this hotel beach.

Nice location, excellent service, large rooms (we stayed in a junior suite) , the "all-included" formula is well worthwhile.
The only reason why I didn't rate 5 stars it's because of the quality of restaurants: too anonymous and the food selection was almost the same (also to mention that we could'nt find more than one/two variety of fish selections and that's very disappointed when you're in a seaside resort !!!).

Room Tip: Try to avoid the ocean front rooms, they could be very humid (for sure during summer season).

We stayed for 5 nights in August 2011...myself, my husband, and two sons, 17 & 14. We upgraded to a Jr Suite for the extra bed and space, and the free internet and Premium Club benefits that came along with it were a help. We did not encounter any rude staff as some other reviewers reported - we were greeted with smiles and they did their best to accommodate our needs. At check-in we were confused with another reservation and given a honeymoon room with a single king bed and champagne, not conducive to a family of four. But it only took 10 minutes before we were relocated to a freshly cleaned room with 2 beds and a twin couch. The couch is not a pullout, but just a twin sized couch to sleep on - my 14 year old found it more comfortable than the beds so it was fine for us.

We stayed on the first floor right near the pools, and, as others have said, the dampness was constant. But it was August in Mexico, so humidity was everywhere; and being from Michigan we deal with it all summer long anyway. Managing the air conditioning in the room helped, but sweaty clothes and wet swimsuits really didn't dry out unless you got them down to the beach and hung them in the wind on the back of your chair. The beds are not terribly comfortable and the pillows small and flat, but we did manage to get some sleep despite that.

As far as food, we had the Seafood, the Japanese, and the Italian. The Seafood restaurant was nice - food was delicious and the presentation was beautiful. But the portions were small and my sons went to the buffet after we finished at the restaurant. The Japanese was great - chef put on a good show and the food was amazing and filling. The Italian was not good at all - service was slow and the food was not tasty. We had no problems with the buffets or the grills, and I would say it was nice to be able to eat in the A/C for a break during the day.

The beach was great - not the best beach I've ever been on but certainly far from the worst. The boys snorkeled and found plenty to see - we brought our own snorkel gear though and were envied for it - the resort limits you to an hour with their gear. We kayaked too, and the staff was helpful. Having the palm trees on the beach was a big bonus for shade relief, and the nice breeze off the water made the beach a pleasant experience even with the heat and humidity.

All in all we enjoyed ourselves. The shows each night were fun - the staff really does a nice job working hard to entertain you. Do not miss the Michael Jackson tribute! For my teenage sons, even thought it took a couple days before they met some other English speaking kids their age, we barely remembered we brought them. They did their thing while we did ours all day, and then just met for dinner. They had no complaints.

Room Tip: The upgrade to the Premium Club rooms is worth the money! Priority attention, free internet & p...
