Absolutely great resort for both couples, friends and families with kids. We liked all the resort facilities and wonderful, wide, clean, sandy beach with palm trees.
The hotel staff was extremely helpful and efficient.
Also congratulations to the Chef for good, well presented, diversified and above all tasty food!!!
One thing that needs a bit of improvement is the kids club and the evening shows...The theatre looks great but the sound system is really bad which spoils most of the performances. Too bad.

I would definitely stay at this resort again and again I would choose Colonial vs Tropical or even Palace.

Room Tip: Ask for the room on upper floor with more sun and light. Check the room and change if needed as some of them have terrible smell of mould. Do not go crazy about ala carte restaurant as in my opinion they are a bit overrated... Good but nothing special.

We have travelled to 5 different resorts, and this one is the best fit for the family especially for young ones ( our kids are 2 and 4 ). Colonial rooms are a bit dated but the close proximity to the water park makes up for it. If your going without kids I would recommend barcelo beaches only because the beach is a bit nicer and the resort including rooms have been renovated, but it is about a 15 walk to the watermark. I have seen people complaining about having to walk a lot but believe me there are worse resorts. Our room was in the middle of the resort and we were a 5 min walk to most accommodations. Food was about a four star but I usually get sick of the buffet by day 5 but in this case I was excellent right through.

We traveled to the colonial in February 2014. We really enjoyed the majority of the stay.
The property is very well looked after, we were in room 6413. Our room was cleaned everyday and looked really good, we did not have any issues other then being on the ground floor. We did wake up one morning to fresh muddy foot prints on our balcony, and the screen door had been opened a touch.

The buffet was far less then any other resorts I've been to. I began timing how long we had to wait for our omelette, the last day it was 13 mins. And that was one of the shorter waits. The food at the a-la cart was very good, we were very happy with that.

My final complaint was the medical staff. The doctor on site spoke English. But from what I saw he was the only one who had any idea what he was doing.

If you enjoy snorkeling, this was a really nice area for this. Tonnes of stingrays just outside the swimming area. The beach was very clean and lots of chairs available.

We did go to cenotes, they were directly across the street and cost 59$. If you book online u get 20%. I highly recommend the lunch as well

We visited the Barcelo Colonial in January. Overall we were quiet happy with the hotel and facilities.

The buffets were nice and had a lot of options. At the colonial we had access to all the buffets except the palace. The a la carets varied. By far Kyoto was the best. Then the steakhouse. The rest were about the same.

The room was decent. It had what we needed but it could use some updates.

The beach was nice and there were enough chairs around for everyone. They had a lot of water sport activities available. The jetskis were about $80 CND for half an hour but were a lot of fun. There are rocks in the water when you walk in so be careful.

The resort is quiet spread out so be prepared for a lot of walking. There is a great mini golf course and tennis and basketball area tucked away in the back.

The service was marginal at the front desk. They were not very helpful and would not answer the phone when you called. We requested a king bed and ended up with a double for the first two nights. They told us they were sold out and there was nothing they could do. From a walk around it didn't look like they were sold out. They also put us in an area right across from the theatre that was very loud. When we did get a king bed they put us on a floor above a smoker. We ended up having smoke in our room. When we asked to be moved we were told that all second floors were smoking and there was nothing they could do. I am not sure about the thinking behind putting the smokers on the second floor and the nonsmokers on the third.

When you stay at the colonial or tropical you have access to maya beach and caribe. If you stay at maya beach or caribe you only have access to their own buffets. We found maya beach buffet to be the best for breakfast on the patio outside.

Colonial charges per device per day for wireless internet. There is no wired connections in the rooms. It was about $12 per day.

There are dolphins on the resort that you can swim with. We just watched from a distance.

Lots of options for kids- nice kids water park.

Lots of wildlife to be seen around the resort. From lizards to bats to little furry creatures.

We vacationed in February 2014 and this resort was amazing. It is a tropical paradise with pools everywhere. The rooms were clean and the food was delicious. We had a second floor room that faced a jungle and the birds and wildlife were nice to wake up to. Thanks to the buffet chef who grilled up our deep sea fishing catch and made a private meal for us. It was kid friendly but too many kids for our adult group. This is the only resort I have ever been at where there was always enough chairs available on the beach. The entrance to the water at the beach was a little rocky, but you could find a sandy area by just walking a few feet. The snorkeling off the beach was fantastic and we got many videos of fish, stingrays and sea turtles. The only negative aspects for me was that the pool bartenders were not very friendly compared to other resorts and the resort has captive dolphins which is not something that I agree with. I would definitely stay at this resort again. I would find no need to upgrade to the Barcelo Palace because the Colonial was perfect.
