I was less than impressed with the food. When we arrived with our group the hotel had already made reservations separately at each restaurant and so our group could not eat together .
They would not modify reservations to accommodate our group in anyway. We had to eat where they told us to eat.
They would not accommodate a group dinner or do anything to help us. Very disappointed in this hotels lack of customer service. The food in the buffet was the same for lunch, dinner everyday and is subpar. Fairly expensive hotel not value for the money,

In short, we will not return to the Barcelo property on the Riviera Maya. It is a pretty place, but the front desk, housekeeping and concierge were not cooperative at all. The seafood restaurant was sub average. On the other hand, the Japanese restaurant was a lot of fun.

Will not return.

Room Tip: It really doesn't matter what you choose. Chances are your will not receive the room you chose.

We travelled To Barcelo Colonial for the 1st week of March. We travelled with our 2 yr old and 1 yr old. We had a great time overall. After reading some of the reviews we were a little concered about the comfort of the beds and service. But honestly we have no idea what ppl were talking about, the beds were comfortable, and soft. They came to clean our room everyday, and even mopped which was great as our 1 year old was crawling all over the place. We did stay in a Standard premium club room.
The toddler pool was really nice, the water in the pools were cold, but the beach was great. There are obvioulsly some areas of the beach that have rocky sand...but all you have to do is find the area that doesnt which isnt hard. Right near the volley ball courts is a great place for kids to play in the sand and there are fish there that swim near your feet.
Food wise the restaurants were goodt. We didnt have any problems getting a reservation. The hotel was fully booked but we were able to get 4 reservations. Obviously as in any buffet the food can get repetive but there still was alway a variety.

Room Tip: Pick a room away from the theater especially if you have kids. We did and we didnt hear a thing. Our room was 6438. Main floor.

My husband and I were at the Barcelo with another couple form march 12 to the 19. It was our 14th times on the Mayan Riviera. We were very pleased with our stay.
Lodging : Our room was centrally located, just across from the theater (a bit noisy at night). The bathroom is well furnished, the bed is comfortable, the old T.V. set is working, the fridge is restocked daily and snacks are provided everyday (chips and peanuts).
Restaurants : We ate at the main buffet for breakfrast and alternate between the snack bars and the main buffet for lunch. The variety don't let you on your appetite.
For supper we went to the Mexican (great food and pleasant atmosphere); to the Italian (excellente!); to the Seafood (good but the personnel seems to be in a hurray all the time and the lobster tail was a bit overcooked); to the Japanese (great show and good food, even surf and turf).
Beach : very nice and sandy (no need for shoes). There is a pier and you can swim and/or feed the fishes.
Bars and entertainment : There is a lack of places to hang out at night. Maybe this is why the numerous springbreakers hang out at the theater after the show (they were very noisy). There was a good choice of liquors but as everywhere, a bit diluted and sugary. We watched only one show. (average). We played mini-golf, Bocce, darts and shuffle board during the afternoon. The material and the grounds need a bit of improvement but we had fun anyway.
The site is very clean, everywhere. The pools are gorgeous and clean. For families, the mini-aquatic park seemed to be very interesting.
We recommend the place.

We went there for March break, 4th time in Riviera Maya, family of 4 (kids are 11 and 9). Room was fine, nice surprise to have an extra single bed where our 11 year old could sleep. Beach is very nice, kids loved snorkling especially around the pier where there were always lots of fish. They had scuba lessons for kids in the pool. Didn't have to wake up at 6 to get chairs on the beach or by the pool. Food at the buffet was good for buffet food, we had dinner at Mexican/Steak/Seafood/Japanese restaurants, only complaint was the overcooked/chewy lobster at the seafood restaurant. Service was good everywhere.
