“Barcelo Maya Vacation”
Reviewed September 11, 2012

A wonderful all inclusive family vacation resort in the Yucatan Peninsula. Beautiful private beach, great restaurants, friendly and helpful staff, enjoyable entertainment and great swimming pools with pool bars.

Room Tip: Ask for a room close to the pool as this will really decrease the amount of walking you have to do.

This was one second tripto this resort. The first trip was in 2009. We loved it so much we went back this year. The beaches are fantastic. The service was great and all the employees are friendly.
It was a relaxing week and there are plenty of activities if you choose to participate. We got a couples massage at the spa. Victor took care of me. It was one if the best massages I was one of the best massages I have ever received.

My family with 3 kids under 8 and inlaws stayed in Mar.2012. Very nice grounds, good water park for young kids at this Barcelo hotel. Good service from all staff. Nice beach. Main complaint;...We were promised 5 reservations for the varied restaurants. BUT, most restaurants are fully booked for every night at the times that young children can stay up to eat (5-8pm). So, for 3-4 of our 7 nights we ate at the buffet. The restaurants we did get reservations were only half full. When we come to an all-inclusive we want to be pampered at meal times...buffet food is not the way to be pampered at the price we paid. Expensive boutiques/stores on site obviously but u can take a taxi to Playa del Carmen to haggle.

Before I start the review I'd like to give an overall impression--this was an amazing family vacation. We have 4 adult married children. One couple has children ages 8 and 10, another has children 2 and 4. The other two couples have no children. This was the perfect setting--everyone had something to do.

We were met at the airport by a Lomas agent who led us to the ground transportation area. I had read that the Cancun airport was overwhelmed, but we didn't find that to be so. The van that took us to the resort was clean and well-maintained, and the driver was very pleasant. The 45 minute drive passed fairly quickly, but don't expect great scenery.

The open air lobby offers a great first impression with its palatial appointments and the beautiful grounds reinforced the initial impression. Check in was fairly uneventful. We made a request on booking and two weeks out to have all of our rooms near one another. One of the families was placed on the Tropical side rather than the Colonial side. Our daughter was insistent that they be switched, and they were reluctantly given a room in the Colonial building with the rest of us. In retrospect, it really wouldn't have been an issue.

The rooms are large and clean with huge bathrooms, a stocked drink refrigerator, a large closet, and an in-room safe. The childless couples had king beds in the room. Those with children had two double beds and a pullout couch. I've read complaints about the horribly hard mattresses. We didn't find that to be so, but one of our families did use the mattress topper found in the room. (I think it was under the mattress). The resort provided a porta-crib for the 2 year old. Our room was cleaned daily. If there is something wrong with the room, don't expect it to be fixed. Our ceiling fan did not function and our TV remote didn't work. We reported both problems to the desk immediately and received assurances that they would be fixed. The fan was never fixed and a new remote was delivered at midnight on our last night at the resort (it also did not work)! Keep in mind the theatre is cranked up until about 10:30 each night. The buildings with the rooms at both the Tropical and the Colonial flank the theatre. Rooms on the theater side are affected by the noise until the shows are over.

The pools are amazing and that is where our family spent most of its time. I think we spent one afternoon on the beach doing the sand castle thing. The sand is soft and white and the shoreline is very clean. There are some coral outcroppings, but they are not problematic. There are many chaises scattered along the entire beach under the palm trees. Snorkeling is fun right off the beach. It must be some of the best around because excursion boats were dropping patrons off. There is considerable marine life around the coral reefs and sea turtles swam about right offshore.

Many of the chaises around the pools are "claimed" early in the morning. Families place towels on the chairs establishing their territories. Our son and wife went to gym in the morning and placed towels in the same area every day. It was great having that central meeting point. We would meet for breakfast at the buffet and then head for the pool. From there the families would scatter to play in the pool, snorkel, participate in water aerobics, sleep in the hammocks, read in the shade, or go to the swim up bar (chronically understaffed). We would meet again for lunch at the snack bar closest to us. There are two large open air snack bars, both having a bar and serving a lunch buffet. The huge pools are a uniform 4 feet deep. Staff provide activies throughout the day including water basketball and volleyball. There is also a children's small waterpark with numerous slides and fountains. It's most appropriate for the under-6 crowd. The pool area is kept immaculately clean, but the bathrooms become nasty as the day goes on.

The food, in general, was very good for buffet food. There were many choices in the main buffets, but lines could move a little slowly in some of the more popular areas. The cooks work at top speed in uncomfortably warm environments. The meals were enjoyable for a week, but could get tiresome over a longer period. The wait staff was variable. They, too, work extremely hard and at top speed, but not all were all that pleasant. Our large family (14) created consternation. For some reason, it always seemed to be a big deal to put a couple of tables together even though the eating area was never crowded.

The restaurant situation is an ordeal. There are seafood, Japanese, and steak restaurants on site. The idea is that families get reservations for these restaurants based on number of nights stay. Since we were staying 6 nights we got to eat at the restaurants 3 times. Seems simple, but it is not. First hitch--there is an upgrade that can be purchased that gives buyers fringe benefits. One of those fringe benefits is automatic seating at any of the restaurants. That means that those seats are reserved in ALL of the restaurants every night in case they are needed. That leaves few openings, and, certainly we couldn't get our whole family in at one time. In order to book the restaurants, you have to stand in line for interminably long times. Even then, you're likely to be turned away and advised to return in case of cancellation. Then you get to stand in line again. And once you arrive at the restaurant, it is nearly empty because those with the upgrade don't show up. It is not worth the time and frustration. We ate at the seafood and the Japanese restaurants. The seafood restaurant was OK, and the Japanese restaurant was very good, but the process cast a pall over the experience.

As far as excursions go, the families with kids went to Xel-ha and enjoyed it a lot. The childless couples made the 2 hour trip to Chichen Itza and thought it was great. Tulum is relatively close, but we had already been there. We had a problem with the Lomas agent at the hotel re: the excursions. He was supposed to be our contact during our stay including booking excursions. Unfortunately, our family made plans during dinner and booked the excursions afterwards. He was always off-duty by then. When he spotted our daughter's bracelet on their return from Xel-ha, he called the room and was very nasty and accusatory toward her.

Other items of note: the floor tiles are extremely slippery when they get wet. Wear shoes. The Tropical and Colonial are well worth the extra money--the grounds and lodging are really much nicer than those of Beach and Caribe. The Internet is very expensive, rented in, I believe, 15 minute blocks. One of our kids just happened to catch someone leaving and used their remaining minutes. The gift store is small, but is stocked with the typical kinds of souvenirs. I didn't think it was over-priced. I bought a very nice baseball cap for $10.

Overall a wonderful experience and we would love to go back!

Room Tip: Get rooms in the halls opposite the theater.

We stayed at the Colonial August 3rd-9th. This is our second visit, and we have also stayed at the Tropical, a mirror-image resort. Check in was smooth although we did have to change our room as it was not what we asked for. The next day we were in the requested room with no hassle. The rooms are large and clean and kept that way, and the fridge is well-stocked, and refilled every day.
The staff is very friendly, and helpful. The rooms and grounds are sprayed for bugs often, and we've never had a problem. Sometimes you will get a sandflea bite while on the beach, but not often. There are lots of chairs on the beach and shaded hammocks, too.
We made all our alacart reservations right after check in, which is much easier than trying daily. The Japanese restaurant is great fun with good food; the steak house is great as well. The lobster was very nice in the seafood restaurant. I don't know if it is necessary to go to the steak house, as they served either ribeye or New York cut steaks in the buffet nearly every night!
This is a lovely resort, with many good eateries, and buffets. The main buffets are perfect for brekkie, and the beach snack bars are great for lunch. Great burgers at the beach snack bars, by the way... The buffets in general are very good for supper, with lots of choices.
The drinks are mixed as weak or strong as you ask for. I like Mexican beer. Much nicer than some of the US beer brands that I've had over the years - with no aftertaste.
The entertainment in the Palenque theatre was not up to the standards of past years. They even re-ran shows so we saw only three new shows all week. Improvement needed here, as these are not the animators like at many other resorts, but specialized entertainers. A new choreographer would help. The MC for the shows speaks about six languages, but none of them are especially understandable.
We had the pleasure of being there when Hurricane Ernesto drifted by to the south of us, so there were two full days of absolutely torrential rains and strong winds. We were very glad for the covered walkways, which kept us dry in our movements around the resort. We also like the big bars; one was air conditioned, with lots of big screen TV's on which we followed the Olympics, especially following Mexico's great run in men's soccer! Others included the Tequila bar on the Tropical side and the Havana bar, also on the Tropical side, which has a small veranda with complete rocking chairs that is very pleasant in the evenings. We love to snorkel in the Mayan Riviera, so we were a little bummed about all the weather and heavy seas, but blame that on Ernesto. One thing; beware of the slippery tiles when wet. Crocs or such like shoes are like teflon on wet tile, so hang on! They keep the hallway floors very clean and mop them every morning. This, when combined with high humidity and a thing film of soap can make the tile very slippery. My wife took a tumble on the stile steps and still has lower back pain. Hold onto the railing any time you are not sure the tile floors are dry.
The rest of the resort is the same as earlier reviews; the shopping centre is still over-priced, but if you don't want to pay to go into Playa del Carmen or Tulum it about balances out, I guess. To travel into these towns we always take the Collectivo's, which are vans. The cost is around 30 peso's each way, but be sure to ask the cost before you get in.
If you can, take a tour to Chichen Itza. It is the most visited archeological site in the world, for good reason. If you don't have the time, at least go to Tulum. It will only take up half a day. Admission to the National Parks like Tulum is free on Sundays. A visit to Tulum puebla (about 5Km south of the ruins) for shopping is always fun. Just tell the collectivo driver you want to go to Tulum puebla for the town, or ruinas Tulum for the archeological site.
The cheapest booze to bring back seems to be at the duty free shops in the airport.
This is a nice resort for families, especially with the children's water park and the lovely pools. There is a nice big Jacuzzi and Saunas next to the Spa. I've read a few reviews with statements like, "they don't cater to Americans or Canadians", and "go to a good American Hotel", but I must say this is balderdash. This is a first-rate facility with a great product. It is in Mexico. If you want things "just like back home", stay home.

We had fun. As locals all over the Caribbean say, "Hurricane season has the finest weather all year - except for when the Hurricane goes by."

My family spent a week here and loved the resort. This was our first time at an all-inclusive and we were really happy. The grounds are meticulously landscaped with first-rate public areas. The beach is perfect with white sand, palm trees and snorking right off the beach. We saw stingrays and sea turtles not 20 feet off the beach. Hobie cats were available free and we went sailing every day, as there was always a nice offshore breeze. Drinks were good, but varied quite a bit in their composition - sometimes weak, sometimes strong. The room was fine with a large bathroom, but two fairly hard double beds which were average at best. Service for our family was amazing, at the bars aned restaurants. My only disappointment was that the food, while greatly varied and always attractive looking varied greatly in quality. We always found excellent food at the buffet, but often had dishes that were not tasty at all. If you go with modest expectations about the food, you will be greatly pleased - we plan to come back. This is a great location for day trips to Tulum, Playa Del Carmen, Coba and freshwater swimming in cenotes close by.

Stayed 1 August to 5 August 2012. Terrible customer service attitude! It felt like I registered for a jail term of bad service, quality, food and hand-outs which I paid for. They treat it as a volume business and don't really care. A ready smile and greeting are extremely hard to come by but rudeness is second nature to the staff here. Hard to get specialty restaurant availability. You have to line up for water sports. Buffet quality was so-so. Room smelled musty and dank. Beach was so-so only. Stayed at Westin Resort and Spa Cancun from 28 July 2012 before moving to Barcelo. Despite the all-inclusive and activities, even my 11 and 12 year kids preferred the Westin location! There are much better locations and experiences anywhere else in Cancun!
