We stayed there June 1 -8. We had 6 in our group. We were a little unlucky cause it rained for the first 2 days solid, but the staff went out of their way to be helpful and polite. I found the buffet was always good. The ala carte restaurants were great. We paid a little extra one night to dine at the Brazilian and it was well worth the money. The service was fantastic and make sure you try one of the special Mayan coffees there. The pool and beach areas are spacious and easy to find chairs. I would recommend water shoes at the beach there as it is rocky all along the shore. The rooms were good and cleaned everyday. Overall we enjoyed are stay and if we ever take a family vacation again I would definitely consider returning.

when my group of 4 arrived - we were greeted promptly with drinks at check in. - what a great way of starting the trip. thats where the fun and pleasure ended.

Food: Horrible - the only option they provide you is the buffet. even though the resort claims to have 5 different restaurants on site - good luck trying to get it. and its not that the restaurants were full to capacity- they just do not want their guests to go to the restaurants instead they want you to eat the nasty buffet food (that by the way they kept recycling day after day, dinner served for breakfast etc) so anyways - my group had to negotiate for 2 days with the staff (we were told we could not talk to the manager because he/she was away till Monday- you expect me to believe that a resort of this size does not have some sort of a manager on site at all times??? - it was 2pm on a friday!!! where was the manager!?!?!?) to get us into one of the restaurants - they finally agree to give us a reservation for 6pm (we were asking for any day at 8pm) - so we went to the restaurant and what did we see??? we were in the restaurant from 6-9pm.... less than half the tables were occupied. it was absurd that we had to literally argue with the staff for 2 whole days to get a reservation and constantly be told that there is NO ROOM AVAILABLE and come to find out that the restaurants were half empty. out of frustration we snuck a look inside the other 4 restaurants on site.... same story. we finally asked one of the leaders at the restaurant and he told us that he is given specific instructions that he is only allowed to serve a certain amount of plates a night - they cant go over their quota - so that means it doesn't matter if you paid for "all inclusive" once they have your money they don't care about what you want or giving you your value. on top of all that the food at the restaurant as pre-plated - meaning they had the food ready to go from earlier in the day and all they did was warm it up in a microwave oven. think of a high end TV dinner. that's what it was.

Staff- horrible unfriendly staff. if you want to get anything from them you have to negotiate - they have no interest in helping or providing customer service. and the majority of the staff (with the exception of reception cannot speak English.

Rooms: if you can get past the mildew smell - the room is equivalent to a motel.

Grounds: The grounds were the redeeming grace . the pool looked very nice, the beach was pretty. but everything closes at 9-10pm. so basically its lights out by 10pm.

Drinks: drinks are NOT PREMIUM. the "all inclusive" package claims to include premium alcohol. but not the case. the drinks are all watered down, and contain very low quality alcohol. 3 of the 4 people in my group got sick from the bad quality.

night scene: as stated previously- everything shuts down at 10pm. with the disco/club being the only exception. that opens at 11pm-2pm. if you are over 23 you will not have fun there. they do not check IDs at the door - the majority of the people appeared to be 16yrs-18yrs old. and the drinks (See above) were also not premium. and if you tried to pay for a premium you were told you have to pay to go to the VIP area (on the second floor - which was empty) and purchase it there - btw - its $20 to get into the VIP area. so on top of paying for your drink you have to also pay to get access to pay for the drink. what a joke.

basically- i will never stay at this resort again. it was a horrible experience. you shouldnt have to argue with staff to get what you rightfully paid for. so if you go here- be prepared to argue and negotiate. we all basically felt like prisoners.

Room Tip: dont book here. you will not get a ocean view. not possible

Just returned from a 3 night stay at the Barcelo Maya Beach resort, booked through Funjet.
Chose this resort becuase of the special price $500, and the reviews were pretty good.
Long story short - you can't go wrong at this price, unless you are expecting a 5 star experience.
This place is huge! Very clean, pools are nice. Bars & buffets at the Colonial are nicer than at the BEach, but we were upgraded to "premium", (no charge!) which let us use the other resorts bars & buffets. The Japanese restaurant was very good as well. Typical buffet food at the others, no complaints here - it's a monumental feat to prepare meals for thousands.
Plenty of chairs at the beach and pool, staff was very friendly and genereous with the liquor!

Stayed here for a wedding in May 2013.

I'll start off with the only negative of the holiday so to give you a heads up if you use hotel taxis but all other review is superb!

Complaint
The only complaint we had was that we were told to ask the bell boys for a taxi to arrange set price, which we did however the taxi man claimed our cost was double what we had been told. I refused to pay which lead to use been escorted to reception where we were told by reception staff we pay the driver or they would call police. Disgusted I explained we had been given a price by their staff and was not our fault if the info he gave us was wrong! In the end our Rep was called to which the reception staff admitted it was the hotels mistake and eventually paid the difference - left a bitter taste of the reception staff but our rep sorted with no problem.

Rooms
Room was amazing, cleaners couldn't do enough, minibar filled every day.

Entertainment
Pool entertainment was really funny and lively which we loved. There are different pools in the complex so whether you like quiet or lively there'll be a pool for you.
Entertainment at night left us feeling a little flat, not as good as some hotels I've stayed in and not what you would expect from a 4/5* really but to be fair it was ok. Jaguars club was really good for late drinks/dancing and easy to get drinks fast with your all inc bands, felt very safe inside not like some clubs abroad.

Beach
One word - BEAUTIFUL!!
Lucky enough to see the turtle in the sea along with stingrays, and millions of fish!
Water sports were brilliant and staff so happy to help.

Food
We were really happy with the food, I know some people complain about choice and id read similar reviews but to be honest if they thought the choice was poor, I don't know what their used to! Plenty of different food, healthy, naughty and delicious - we ate faaaarr tooo much!! The waiters couldn't be more friendly and helpful, coming straight away to get you seated and drinks.

Staff
All in all the staff were brilliant, always happy to help and friendly.

It was our first trip to Mexico and this hotel didn't disappoint! Check in was fast and easy - no complaints there. The staff were really attentive and friendly, at meals they were always coming over to offer more drinks and always with a smile.
One of the woman who worked on guest services wasn't particularly helpful on the first day - got the impression that she just wanted to rush to get rid of us and didn't offer much additional info.
However when we went back another woman was very helpful. We brought the wrong type of adapter plug and she very helpfully gave us one free of charge for use for all of our stay. Imagine my panic at the thought of not being able to my use hair straighteners!
We loved the mini bar which was re-stocked daily for free with branded bottles of drinks - this was a lovely added extra which we weren't expecting.

Bathroom was lovely and spacious.

We ate at one of the el a carte restaurants - the Mexican one. Although the atmosphere was great and we loved being given the sombre to wear (added to the Mexican experience) we weren't very keen on the food. I usually love Mexican food but this was very disappointing - maybe its just more authentic Mexican cuisine - but the fajitas weren't very nice.
However this by no means impacted on our experience of the hotel. The pool, the beach and all other restaurants were all great.

The only thing that was lacking was entertainment at night - they did have nightly shows but we didn't think they were that good - just Mexican singing. But eh that's seems a bit unfair we were in Mexico afterall! However would a nice to seem a bit more of a variety.

We travelled to the Barcelo Maya Beach in late April 2013. The resort itself is a bit of a trek from Cancun Airport but once you get there, you will say it was worth it. The resort itself is a little dated - not having been upgraded in a while by the look of it. But, that being said, the rooms were clean, well appointed and beds comfortable. (My information tells me that it is being renovated as we speak so that's a good thing).

There's really no bad block of rooms to stay in as all are seemingly the same distance from the pool or beach and the main buffet area. Given that the entire resort is broken into 5 separate resort options (Beach/Caribe, Colonial, Tropical and Palace) all have a small resort feel to them. This is what we like so much about Barcelo.

The stellar aspect of this resort though is the beach. It is absolutely stunning for this area. We have visited the Bahia Principe Coba as well and the Beach at barcelo is much better, not to mention you don't have to take a shuttle to get there. It's right next to the pool and about a two minute walk from our room in the Tulum block. Everything you need is right there as well - snack bar, pool bar, pool(s), etc. so you can go to the beach in the morning and never have to leave. Generally the beach is a busy spot but chairs were never hard to find. The only thing at a premium is shade, if that's important to you.

Compared to other All-Inclusives we have visited, the food was slightly above average. The selection at the main buffet was very good and the food fresh (as it can be in a buffet style restaurant). As well, the snack bar near the pool had a great selection for lunch and snacks throughout the day. We did not try the a la cartes so cannot comment.

We had a great week at Barcelo Maya Beach and would not hesitate one bit to return.

What a fantastic time! You cannot go to an oceanfront hotel on the east coast and have all food/drinks included for the price we paid to be pampered at an all inclusive resort. The staff was amazing and helpful, the food and drinks were divine and the beach is AMAZING! Planning our next trip and taking our children!!!

Room Tip: We paid a little less and stayed at the Beach/Caribe and found it absolutely amazing! Want a little...
