“Third Trip to Cat”
Reviewed October 6, 2013

We just returned from our 3rd visit to the Catalonia Riviera Maya.

We had a very nice time but noticed a few differences. The most notable was that the air conditioning in the Sports Bar was either not working or not on; we had spent most evenings there during previous visits, but it was simply too hot without AC. The food overall was fine, but there didn't seem to be as much variety; we were both a bit tired of the repetition by mid-week.

We enjoyed the Asian restaurant and we appreciated that both buffet restaurants were open for the entire week as during our previous visits, the air conditioned buffet was closed.

The staff throughout the resort was, as usual, very kind and helpful. A special thanks to the front desk staff that resolved the AC issue in our room the first day; it worked fabulously all week after that. We also want to send a special thanks to Nazario, Alfonso, Leonardo and Armando as they made wonderful drinks and gave great service at the pool bars. Also, we must send a thanks to Raul in the bike hut; very kind each day that we borrowed bikes to ride around the community.

We love the size of this resort; large enough for some variety, but small enough to walk anywhere you want to go within minutes and in a safe gated community with the marina and shops/restaurants within walking or biking distance.

We just returned from 7 days at the Cat 4th year and the best. Please take the bad reviews with a grain of salt some people just like to complain. Everything from check in to check out was perfect. Everyone is so accommodating and nice they all want you to have a great vacation. The buffets were good not goumet but we never were hungry. Ala cartes great. Tapas japonese and steakhouse outstanding. Celebrated a birthday and they went out of their way to make it very special. Raphael, Alfredo, Gilberto thank you. We are returning for our 5th visit in May and can't wait. Upgrade if you can the suites are wonderful. Otherwise I think you can't go wrong here. The only disappointment was the Pure chill bar was undergoing some renovations. Missed having some great cocktails at the chill bar. Next visit !

Room Tip: Upgrade if you can

We have just spent one week at the Catalonia. It is a very nice smaller resort. Having stayed at several very large resorts (Palladium, Bahai, Bavaro) over the last five years this was a nice change. Our room was very nice, with a huge comfortable super king size bed. We were on the ground floor building 4. We appreciated being close to everything, beaches, pools, restaurants. It was great to only have a two minute walk anywhere on the resort. The resort is very clean and the staff is very friendly.

We found our fellow guests super friendly too! And enjoyed visiting with them all! It was a great change from all the larger resorts.

There was some loud construction while we were there as they are moving the Japanese restaurant beside the other restaurants but the loud part of the construction was over before we left.

We tried three al a cartes the steak house (we went too twice) was excellent the Tapas was good, the Mexican was a disappointment as the chips were stale and the food bland ( you expect a bit of spice at a Mexican restaurant and even the 'spicy' sauces were not spicy at all). The buffet was excellent for breakfasts the two times we went for an evening meal it was just okay. We would give the food a 3 out of 5.

The beach was nice, as mentioned many times the snorkelling is good. Especially since you can snorkel in the lagoon even on red flag days. There is a lot of rocks but there is a sandy spot to enter and leave the swimming area where you do not need swim shoes if your careful.

A negative was the locals who come on weekends and are loud and rude and take over the pool. We were literally forced from our chairs by 20 loud pushy locals with about 10 small children who took over one whole side of the pool and the next day about 20 loud local teens took over the pool was very annoying.

All in all we enjoyed staying at this resort.

I have just returned from a trip at the Catalonia and it is without a doubt one of the best All-inclusive hotels out there for the money. It is located in a very safe area with staff so good I still found myself tipping even though its included with the package. Don't listen to the bad reviews as people were complaining in the line in front of us about no discount being given because they did not drink. Some people are just gonna complain about everything.

Best thing about the hotel is that it is conveniently located near an excellent dive company called Planet Scuba - a highly professional company with very experienced instructors. I can't recommend them highly enough. Even if you only snorkel, book the trips with them.

The hotel itself was a shock to say the least. Concrete beds in standard rooms on the Yucatan side are a new one on me!!! First and only time I hope to ever stay in a hotel/resort with these!

When we arrived there was a positive feeding frenzy! Reception staff very strongly encouraged other visitors to upgrade on arrival (at a price of course!!!) which made the check in very slow! We'd already booked a Privileged room so were spared that humiliation!

Food is decidedly average. Don't go here if you enjoy good quality food. This hotel caters for the stack it high; leave most of it on the plate uneaten vacationer!

One exception to this rule is the freshly made omelette provided you don't mind crunching on egg shells!

Drinks are okay but the cup cleanliness leaves a lot to be desired, and were often chipped! If you like a lot of sugar in your drinks and fruit juice made purely from concentrate, this is the resort for you.

Coffee provided in the Riviera Maya side Privileged rooms is good.

On both sides the hotel/resort was in a general state of poor repair. Leaks almost everywhere. We felt really sorry for the staff who spent all day (and night) trying to mop up and hide the fact that the hotel has badly leaking roofing in all public areas. Given the staining it's hard to believe this to be a new problem!

In general, the staff seem reluctant to treat you nicely unless you tip heavily. Considering the cost of the holiday is not cheap (equivalent to a visit to Orlando including parks!!) we felt this let the hotel down. As an all inclusive hotel I strongly recommend the hotel management pay the staff properly in the first place and banning tipping so that all visitors enjoy a pleasant experience. Definitely a report card of "must try harder".

That said, we were blessed with an excellent maid. We could tell instantly whether she or a very poor substitute had cleaned our room (or not where the substitutes were concerned - felt they couldn't be bothered).

Strangely, for a resort that opens through the rainy season it doesn't cater for rainy days in a satisfactory way. We were really surprised that there were so few covered communal areas for guests to go and be entertained on wet days. Spent the first few days in the room. :(

As for the spa - looks really nice but fails to deliver. Prices of treatments are excessive in the extreme (much more than prices charged in some of UK's very best spas!). Really takes the proverbial even after the offered discounts and vouchers!!! And all the pools are freezing cold too. Not good.

As for the evening restaurants - highly recommended is the steak house. Can't comment on the Japanese as we didn't try it. Otherwise would recommend avoiding evening meals unless you have low expectations or enjoy junk processed food.

Everyone in our party suffered tummy troubles - even those with a very strong constitution. Given that the food was mainly tepid I suspect that may have been the source of the trouble but couldn't say for sure.

Given the general consensus of reviews on Trip Advisor clearly there are people who are happy with this resort but frankly, if you like quality and peaceful relaxation this is not the hotel for you. Pay more and go to a proper 4/5 star hotel instead. (Alternatively go to Orlando and enjoy the parks instead!)

One last word on the marketing - don't believe any of the pictures or the Thomson 4 star rating. We were hard pressed to recognise any of the pictures - they are not a true representation of the resort in our opinion!

Room Tip: If you want a decent experience here definitely upgrade to Privileged before you arrive!!! Select a...

Just returned from a week at this resort...
Food okay, terrible beach area with all the rocks, and even the color or the water isn't a beautiful blue color as the other beaches along the Riviera Maya are. Nice and clean pools. Drinks good but weak even after asking for doubles. If you are looking for an inexpensive 3-star resort in Mexico, look elsewhere like Playa del Carmen where the beaches are beautiful. There are many other inexpensive, but better resorts in the area. Room upgrades are a scam! Most other resorts don't scam their guests by this method. Nothing special at all about this Catalonia resort. :(

Room Tip: Beware if you go to the Marina Money Exchange! We were taken for $33usd but didn't realize it un...

We stayed here for a week in June of this year, it was amazing! We upgraded to a Priviledge Suite and it was so worth the money!! The Suites were fantastic! I loved the Resort itself, the pool was nice, the food was great, the beach is beautiful! They have free bike rentals, which we used twice to drive around Puerto Aventuras. I felt so safe and secure, because the Resort is within a gated "community" with a Marina, where you can see and swim with Dolphins, etc. It was truly awesome!! The Staff was friendly, great. The drinks were good! The room was clean, the restaurants were delicious! The Spa at the Resort is amazing! I have recommended this Resort to everyone I know, and I'm looking forward to going back soon!!

Room Tip: Upgrade to the Priviledged Suites if you can afford it! They are spacious and beautiful! We also got...
