“March vacation”
Reviewed March 23, 2013

Travelled in March!!! With our family of four!!!!
Food was okay, some days worse than others!!!!!!!! Buffet needed to try harder, some staff in the am were rude! In the evening they were great! Most staff at the hotel were wonderful!!!!!

Allergy alert******hotel buffet had nuts on most desserts and breads with no warnings!!, if you have nut allergies they do not seem aware of the danger at all! We had trouble with dessert as most had contamination of nuts as decoration as did loaves of bread!!! Someone should make the chef aware of this!!!!

Kids club well run, the ladies were fantastic with our children, only complaint is they had no snacks for the kids or juice, to tie them over until lunch or dinner, they did a wonderful job taking them to the buffet for lunch so we could have lunch by ourselves was a special treat! I saw them swim with the kids but they should have stayed in the pool longer with the kids only for a half an hour a day is not much!! My kids complained about that all week!

Hotel room was nice! Beds were awful! Mattress was in desperate need to be replaced we expected more from a Catalonia chain, if in a standard room the beds should not be in that bad of shape! Air conditioning was very musty, vents filthy in our room and friends. Needed to clean the them.
Staff are always cleaning at this hotel it was spotless! Except the vents in the rooms! The theatre area also appeared to have bugs, many parents complained a bout getting bit while watching the mini disco, it was fun for the kids but was at 8pm which was late should be at 7:30!
We liked our vacation! It was beautiful! Will we return, we are not sure, the beds were that bad in our room!

Dear Tracey P,

Thank you very much for your feedback. We deeply apologize if your stay with us was not a perfect experience.

I will forward your comments to the Manager of the kids club as well as the Chef to take into consideration.
We take very seriously the allergies of our guests and try to satisfy them as possible, usually when we are aware of the situation, we ask our clients to approach to the Concierge to get an "Allergy Card" which is basically the description of the allergy in spanish for clients to show in the restaurants and would be easier for them to get assistance from the staff.

I hear all your comments, and certainly we will take seriously your feedback and see possibilities to improve and make sure your next visit will exceed your expectations.

Yours sincerely,

Hotel Manager

this is an old review but I figured it still counts...me and my husband stayed here in 2009, had a great time! loved the specialty restaurants especially the Japanese .. we were 20 and 21 at the time and had a blast. the people that worked there always greeted us with a smile and jokes. we stayed by the pool half the time did a lot of the drinking contests and activities. my husband is very energetic (ADHD) and competitive so he was doing every activity he could ! lol. other half was at the beach just relaxing..did some kayaking saw a lot of beautiful homes that were right off the water..

I did get sick one night any my husband another night...we still went out to eat and tried to still enjoy the night but yea we were pretty sick...not sure what it was from but it was only 1 night each so we figure that would happen anyway just from change of environment and eating ways!

room was actually very nice and I loved all the flowers and how nice the grounds were kept up. lots of palm trees and we did snorkel some and saw some really pretty fish and we got great pictures with the beautiful rocks that are down on the beach. all in all a great, fun , relaxing vacation..we tried out a resort in playa del Carmen in 2010 and Riviera was a better choice we are trying out the Dominican republic in a couple months but we would visit this resort again.

My wife and I just returned from our 7th stay at the Cat. and are already looking forward to the 8th. We were greeted with smiles , a free upgrade to privledged , a bottle of champagne , a basket of fresh fruit and a special invite to a welcome back dinner at the Mexican resturant ( albejeres ) . There is a special feel to this hotel that keeps calling us back , maybe it's just a comfort thing , but we have never had a bad stay here . Friendly faces everywhere and an Hola from every employee you meet . We have refered a lot of people to the Cat and they all loved it , it's to bad to a see a bad review from time to time but I think they're the type of people who would complain if their icecream were to cold !!! We have so many good memories here and will continue to add to them in the future . A year is a long time to wait , but we'll be back AGAIN and AGAIN . Lastly , if you are looking for transfer arrangements Olympus transfer is spot on and the way to go . Thank-you to all the staff at the Catalonia for making our winter get away a memorable one year after year !!!!!!!!!

Stayed here for my Honeymoon and I have to say this is one of the best hotels I have ever stayed in, excellent service, friendly staff, good variety of meal options, activities during the day keep you busy whether its shooting, archery or pool games. The room was immaculate, great view over the pools and out to sea. Onsite nightlife means you don't have to take a taxi to the local town. Food is good with a variety of on site restaurants and snack bars. The pool bars are ideal for swimming upto and keeping cool while having a drink.

Room Tip: Pool facing rooms are quiet and offer the best view

Visited here twice in 2007 once in the winter december hot, and once in the summer june very hot.

Lovely rooms. A great games room, air hockey, decent pool table, and videa golf simulator with real clubs, the best I have seen at any hotel, (although there was a charge) with a very stylish bar in the middle. Quite expensive considering the other holidays we have been on. Beach ok, but I have been spoilt with the beaches in Cuba.

Can be quite raucous and loud with the Americans 'talking' (shouting) Had some good fun with them though, inventing our own cocktails in the pool bar.
A fantastic little area by the pool where you can paint pottery and the next day they bring it back glazed. I was like a kid, painting ceramic frogs, pigs etc even my husband sat still for a good hour painting a parrot!
Good little night club. I do like it here, if it was a bit cheaper I would go back, but I can get better value in Cuba.

THE ROOM
First stay at this resort but not the last as we would return to this resort. Had read lots of Trip Advisor prior to Booking and had reservations. Privileged Superior Ocean View booked about 3 months in advance and paid more, for the Catalonia Yucatan through Nolitours but our rooms were on the Mayan Riviera side -
WHICH IS AMAZING!! WORTH EVERY PENNY!!
- no matter the two are so intertwined, very easy to navigate.
We stayed in the Villa 8 - BEST ROOM IN THE PLACE IN OUR OPINION!!. Thank you to Ali and Cynthia and all staff for making this Happen for our 8th Anniversary!!
We loved it so very Much!! THANK YOU!! THANK YOU!!
With the privileged rooms suites extra perks, free safe and a stocked mini-bar, along with robes and slippers and Wi FI. Also get 1 extra (dinner for 2) coupon for the TAPAS. Turn down service is included and we received 2 nights which was very nice.
The rooms were super clean and the beds are comfy.
The maid service from Esperanza was excellent with new towel art every day along with some conversation and always big smiles. Make sure you tip the maid every day to reward - them they really do deserve.
Bathrooms huge but floors very slippery and there was lots of storage for clothes in the closets. However in our Room there was no light near the one closet and every time I needed to use the closet or get into safe - I had to use the Headlamp Flashlight which I brought - should be fixed as may not be safe.

THE GROUNDS/ BEACH

The hotel grounds are immaculate and very beautiful. There is never any garbage or an empty glass on the main hotel grounds. It's very well maintained. It's not very large and getting around it is very easy. Guests are very friendly and easy to meet.

If you want souvenirs you are in luck, 5 of the nights we were there they had street vendors selling wares in the walk-ways. Various items are for sale and they hang out till 10 pm on the nights they are there. Barter with them, mention your price they will stop you and barter. Please be fair!

The beach and view of the ocean is beautiful and amazing. Yes, there are rocks, but never did I need my water shoes. We had two days of red flag and 4 of yellow but we were able to swim/snorkel through it all. Snorkeling, just on the other side of the rocky reef straight out into the water, center of the boardwalk is the best. The water is much clearer and many more varieties of fish there. Snorkeling right off beach some the best in the area. A small lagoon provides extra space where you can kayak and has white sand and calm waters.
Lounge chairs, chaises around the pool, beach, the towel game is in full force but never had a problem. You will want to place the blue towels across the chaise you want early in the morning. I was out each day around 7:15 am.
We even got many days of beach drink service! That was super!!
THE FOOD
JOEL the Food and Beverages Manager was so very helpful in getting us and another family reservations for our last 4 days, after two days of Extreme frustration over the Non-reservation System in place.

Waiting for an hour outside restaurants without bar service to keep quests happy is not a good policy. We spoke to many other guests who were also extremely frustrated with waits, very late eating and not being able to get into ala cartes at all!!
" THANK YOU VERY MUCH JOEL AND ALL OF YOUR STAFF FOR MAKING A BIG DIFFERENCE IN OUR STAY AT THE CAT -- WE ARE SO GRATEFUL FOR YOUR EXTRA CARE!!"
The food is what you expect from a 4 star. The buffet had tonnes of breakfast options, all kinds of eggs, omelettes made fresh for you, fruit, meat (yes, there was bacon every once in a while for those who care ), breads, pancakes, donuts etc. Lunch was the same tonnes of options. Dinner was good too. We never went hungry and enjoyed every meal. Lots of fresh fruit and salad options, fresh grilled fish, or steak; really whatever you want. The Bamboleo snack shack at the beach great for lunch with a few salads, pizza, hot dogs, hamburgers, and the best sandwiches after 11:00 p.m.-- AMAZING!
A la Cartes - the Japanese and Tapas were Awesome. Also enjoyed Steak House and Italian. Did not experience Creperie so I guess I will have to go back just to try!!

Close to Playa Del Carmen, we took the Collectivo $2, located just outside the complex by yellow bus stand (20 min ride) then took the ferry to Cozumel $30 each - very safe and very much fun. 10 Min walk to Puerto Aventuras Community with Dolphins, gated community with shops, restaurants and a nice marina. There are dolphins and manatee at this marina and you don't have to pay to see either. Gringo's Cantina a Must for Happy Hour 4 - 6 p.m. 2 for one drinks and the absolute best Nachos!
THE SPA - did not have time to try but heard great reviews from other guests. - next trip for sure!

THE SERVICE
The service at this hotel was great!. And a little tipping goes a long way! They often remember your name and what you drink!
The staff at the restaurants, the bars and the activity staff are so friendly and helpful.
The staff work extremely hard to make your stay enjoyable.
THANKS FOR A GREAT VACATION!!!

EXCURSIONS: Coba - Out tour Guide Rebecca from Altourative booked through Noli was very knowledgeable. We were able to climb the Ruins.. this may be the last year?
Money - we were told to bring Canadian and pesos. Everything at the hotel is quoted in US dollars but they don't actually take payment in them (weird) - We took pesos, US and Canadian along with a credit card just to be sure.

Just a couple of MINUSES: Hope that this one can be fixed before I return as the a la carte restaurants system is not very good with "no reservations" and standing in a long lines, not getting into until late or not at all!
Some floors are very slippery – more slippery than one would expect. A few well-places all-weather abrasive strips would go a long way to make things safer. Hope this can be improved somehow for future?!?!?

ANYWAY WE WILL GO AGAIN..BUT DEFINITELY ON THE PRIVILEGED SIDE!

Room Tip: Privileged Superior are the Best rooms and worth the extra$!!!

When checking out of the resort, my fiance and I were notified of our balance owed for charges. When asked to see what we were being charged for, it included a gatorade purchased in the spa. We had never been to the spa in our time at the resort nor would we have purchased any beverages as it was an all-inclusive resort. They showed us a register reciept stapled to another carbon copy sheet that had my fiances' (carbon copy) signature on it and asked, "is this your signature?" The only signature he gave while at the resort was for a room upgrade when checking in which was a carbon copy form. This issue was not resolved and we ended up paying the bill for it.

With our room upgrade, a free professional photo was provided. After getting photos taken, we went to the photo company's desk and were informed that they could not give us the photo unless we had a voucher which should have been provided to us when we checked in. We went to the front desk to get a voucher but were told that we couldn't get one until a manager signed one and to come back tomorrow that there was no manager on duty. When we asked if there was any way to work something out since we would be on an excursion all day the following day and were leaving the morning after that, the gentleman at the counter told us it wasn't his problem.

They have a creperie at the resort where they serve ice cream and shakes. My fiance and I went one night we were there but it was closed. We asked the front desk about it and they told us that it was closed due to the weather.

Room was nice, food was good, and many staff members were very helpful but others were very rude and some fishy business going on there. I don't recommend staying at this resort.

Dear 444Angelad,

First of all we would like to thank you for forwarding us your comments from your last stay with us as. The opinion of our guests is very important to us and our main source to improve our facilities and service.

We regret the issues that you had during your stay in the hotel and that they were not solved on time.

I appreciate you informed us about your experience in the spa. Be sure that we will check carefully in order to find what happened, I will verify the situation with the charge of the spa, I assure you that nothing gets charged to the guest's bills unless our clients sign the tickets as authorization.

The photo voucher that you are refering to, is given by our Concierge staff from 9:00am until 5:00pm at the moment of booking the rest of the amenities that come with the type
of room you reserved, this is the reason why the Front Desk staff was not able to give it to you, however it was not the appropiate way to handle the situation. Please accept my apologies for this.

Myself, my colleages and all the hotel staff will take your comments very seriously in order to surprise you positively in case you decide to visit us again in the future.

Yours sincerely,

Hotel Manager
