I read lots of reviews before we went to this resort and thought it would be great but it wasn't for us.
The good: The staff is kind and helpful. We had the worst mattress ever and, unfortunately, waited 2 nights before we told them. However, upon informing them they came up with a new mattress for us which saved our bodies from compete annihilation. The grounds are Garden of Eden like and extremely well maintained. The spa is gorgeous and of a caliber that just seems way over the top for this resort. Dinner at Klay Talay is superb and they serve marvelous curry. The gym is small but adequate and we used it daily.
The bad: No beach. Yes, I know others have said it isn't bad but my definition of a beach is one that has sand you can stretch out on and an ocean that is swimmable and deep enough that it is over your head not up to your knees as is the case here. Rocky pools of shallow water are what exist around the beach whales. Pools are small and not acceptable for a resort of this size although when the new area opens up there is a pool that is much larger that may help with this situation.
Breakfast and lunch are terrible as are the majority of dinners. The Sandwicherie is the worst. We had dinner one night at the Italian place and both my husband and I fell ill shortly after leaving the restaurant. Coincidence? Maybe but I doubt it. Drinks range from poor to okay. Nothing stands out. The majority of all food is tasteless and highly salted.
If you love Bali beds then this resort is Bali Bed central and you will have no problem getting one. However, there are no covers on them so you'll be laying on your beach towel or vinyl. Yuck. I love Bali Beds but felt it was overdone here without the follow through we are accustomed to.
We rarely had a waiter that brought drinks but I feel that is because every place we went was understaffed. The Italian place at dinner looked like the staff was running a marathon but not knowing which direction they were headed. It was uncomfortable to watch them running around all over the place stopping only to place your plate or drink on your table and run away before you even had a chance to open your mouth that you needed something.
The rooms in a nutshell: Dark, dank, smelly, moldy and dirty. Every time we walked into our room there was an overpowering smell and we just said "pew" and it became a running joke between us. We were in Building 40 and on the second floor. The room is narrow and long and the only natural light in the room is from the sliders that go to the balcony. The lock on the balcony door is a joke and makes your room easily accessible to the next door neighbors should they be creeps and want to get into your room and steal something. No problem to cross from one balcony to another. They also have the funkiest and nastiest wooden chairs ever out on the balcony. Uncomfortable and covered in bird poo.
This resort tries hard to get you to go on a "30 minute golf cart tour of the property" so you can buy into Exotic Travelers. Of course we did not go on the tour and based on this experience Karisma hotels are not for us so we wouldn't return to one.
My husband said this resort was a throwback to 20 years ago. Towel cards, a key lock for the safe and you must pay separately for internet service. Ridiculous. At least the internet works well for the exorbitant price they charge.
Oh, if you want drinkable wine you must pay separately for a bottle of highly overpriced stuff. Surf and turf is extra too. Fortunately we don't like lobster and don't require wine when there are other things to drink.
This was a poor choice for us but it might work just fine for you. We are just glad that we got a spectacular deal for it because at the $400 plus a night we see regularly on Orbitz, Expedia and others it's way overpriced for what it delivers.
