“Not For Us”
Reviewed April 11, 2013

I read lots of reviews before we went to this resort and thought it would be great but it wasn't for us.

The good: The staff is kind and helpful. We had the worst mattress ever and, unfortunately, waited 2 nights before we told them. However, upon informing them they came up with a new mattress for us which saved our bodies from compete annihilation. The grounds are Garden of Eden like and extremely well maintained. The spa is gorgeous and of a caliber that just seems way over the top for this resort. Dinner at Klay Talay is superb and they serve marvelous curry. The gym is small but adequate and we used it daily.

The bad: No beach. Yes, I know others have said it isn't bad but my definition of a beach is one that has sand you can stretch out on and an ocean that is swimmable and deep enough that it is over your head not up to your knees as is the case here. Rocky pools of shallow water are what exist around the beach whales. Pools are small and not acceptable for a resort of this size although when the new area opens up there is a pool that is much larger that may help with this situation.

Breakfast and lunch are terrible as are the majority of dinners. The Sandwicherie is the worst. We had dinner one night at the Italian place and both my husband and I fell ill shortly after leaving the restaurant. Coincidence? Maybe but I doubt it. Drinks range from poor to okay. Nothing stands out. The majority of all food is tasteless and highly salted.

If you love Bali beds then this resort is Bali Bed central and you will have no problem getting one. However, there are no covers on them so you'll be laying on your beach towel or vinyl. Yuck. I love Bali Beds but felt it was overdone here without the follow through we are accustomed to.

We rarely had a waiter that brought drinks but I feel that is because every place we went was understaffed. The Italian place at dinner looked like the staff was running a marathon but not knowing which direction they were headed. It was uncomfortable to watch them running around all over the place stopping only to place your plate or drink on your table and run away before you even had a chance to open your mouth that you needed something.

The rooms in a nutshell: Dark, dank, smelly, moldy and dirty. Every time we walked into our room there was an overpowering smell and we just said "pew" and it became a running joke between us. We were in Building 40 and on the second floor. The room is narrow and long and the only natural light in the room is from the sliders that go to the balcony. The lock on the balcony door is a joke and makes your room easily accessible to the next door neighbors should they be creeps and want to get into your room and steal something. No problem to cross from one balcony to another. They also have the funkiest and nastiest wooden chairs ever out on the balcony. Uncomfortable and covered in bird poo.

This resort tries hard to get you to go on a "30 minute golf cart tour of the property" so you can buy into Exotic Travelers. Of course we did not go on the tour and based on this experience Karisma hotels are not for us so we wouldn't return to one.

My husband said this resort was a throwback to 20 years ago. Towel cards, a key lock for the safe and you must pay separately for internet service. Ridiculous. At least the internet works well for the exorbitant price they charge.

Oh, if you want drinkable wine you must pay separately for a bottle of highly overpriced stuff. Surf and turf is extra too. Fortunately we don't like lobster and don't require wine when there are other things to drink.

This was a poor choice for us but it might work just fine for you. We are just glad that we got a spectacular deal for it because at the $400 plus a night we see regularly on Orbitz, Expedia and others it's way overpriced for what it delivers.

I found the property to be very comfortable the evening meals of very high quality and, of course, the location is unbeatable, but most of all it was the charming and accommodating staff that made
this a very memorable experience. When I misplaced an irreplaceable item, my wedding ring, my frantic search turned up nothing. The security staff, however, in a kind, compassionate and professional manner, proceeded to take charge. They calmly & meticulously search until they found where I had carelessly stored the ring and a very grateful guest could go back to enjoying her lovely holiday. Three cheers for a great staff!

Room Tip: I recommend a suite, like I had, that is far from the main bar area . It was much quieter.

My husband and I just returned from a wonderful vacation at the El Dorado Seaside Suites. We have travelled to several places throughout the years and stayed at some great resorts but nothing compares to this resort.
From the moment we arrived the staff were absolutely fantastic; we were checked in very quickly and within 20 minutes or so we were in our room. The first thing we noticed was that we weren't required to wear resort bracelets which was so nice as they do become annoying after a few days. Our room was on the second floor in building 40 overlooking the swim-up rooms one floor below us. We couldn't have asked for a better location, central to the beach, bars and restaurants. Every night we slept with our patio door open so we could listening to the sound of the waves, it was so relaxing.
The rooms are large, the king size canopy bed was very comfortable and the large walk-in shower was a great feature. The rooms also have plenty of closet space,a jacuzzi tub, flat screen TV and a fridge stocked with beer, water and pop on a daily basis. Our room also had a bottle of chilled sparkling wine waiting for us when we arrived.
This was the first time we ever stayed at a small resort and the advantages of this were apparent from the moment we arrived. The drinks were premium, no slush machines here like other resorts that we stayed at, the bartenders made the drinks you requested with fresh juices and mixes....so good! There were ten of us in our group and we ate at all the restaurants and everyone agreed the food was very good. The resort grows most of their own produce and you could tell by the quality and freshness in all the meals. There are no large buffets here and in most of the restaurants you order from a menu so the food is prepared the way you like it. The beach BBQ is buffet style and one of the breakfast restaurants has self service or you have the option of ordering from the menu. My husband enjoyed the fact that in the evening he wasn't required to wear long pants to dinner, dress shorts and a collared shirt were the requirements for the men.
The weather was fantastic so we spent our days at the beach and swimming in the ocean with the tropical fish........beautiful spot! This was the first time we stayed at a resort that we didn't have any problems getting beach chairs at any time of the day. As I mentioned there were 10 of us and we all sat together no problem. The canopy beach beds are also a great option for those that like to take a break from the sun.
The pools are clean and warm and they offer a few activities throughout the day if you want to participate.
The entertainment in the evening was great and there seemed to be something for everyone. The music and atmosphere at the main bar was excellent.....great time!
For the very first time we have found a resort that we will definitely be returning to and the next time we will stay for 10 days because 7 days in paradise wasn't long enough. Many thanks to all the staff for a very memorable vacation!!

If you are looking to stay in paradise and enjoy being treated like royalty, this is the place for you. Everything about this resort is perfect-the rooms, the views, the beach, the sea, the food, the service and the staff are all exceptional. We had an ocean front room in block 25, right on the edge of the beach and opposite one of the bars and restaurants-it was fabulous! Waking up at 6:30am with a view of the Caribbean from my bed was like being in heaven. There were always lots of beach beds available, even later in the day, and it was so lovely to spend a whole day just reading and relaxing, while friendly servers were always on hand to bring cold drinks. The food was delicious in all the restaurants and room service. Having your own personal concierge is a nice touch and certainly made you feel that your holiday was important to them. This was our first stay at an all inclusive resort and I rather think we have spoiled it for ourselves-I can't imagine any others measuring up to this standard!

Aaaaaahhhhh where to start? I am so relaxed after this break, it was everything I had hoped for. The resort is the most friendly and relaxing place I have ever visited. The staff can't do enough for you and are always cheerful and seem genuinely pleased you are visiting. We had a swim-up room in block 37, which is at the furthest end of the resort, and is the quieter of the 2 swim up sections. Despite various people's comments about the rooms being too shady we had sun on the balcony all morning, and the sunbeds in the water outside the room got the sun until about 4pm each day. It was peaceful, but if you wanted to swim along to the bar by block 35 at the end, alot of people would gather there for a drink mid to late-afternoon and there was a great atmosphere. Many people seem to complain about lack of ocean views because of trees, but you have to realise there are loads and loads of coconut palms all round the resort, offering shade and a windbreak, and this is part of the charm of the place - it looks lush and tropical. I don't understand why people complain about things which are pretty obvious if you actually take the trouble to read reviews and look at pictures or youtube videos of the place: if you go onto Tripadvisor to moan about something why didn't you check out the facts on the site beforehand??
We were on the Anniversary package, and I can't stress highly enough that if you are travelling within 60 days either side of the date of your wedding anniversary (no matter how long ago you married), then email the hotel directly and tell them and they will put you on the anniversary package as long as you are in an upgraded room (ie swim-up or ocean view) and you take your marriage certificate with you to show them when you arrive. Its no use contacting Thomson about it as they just tell you to contact the hotel directly. This will give you free wifi, saving you $90 usd a fortnight for each device. My husband took his laptop and I had my smartphone, so this saved us $180usd and meant he could play poker online when he wanted to and I could keep in touch with the kids through facebook messaging (doesn't cost you anything with free wifi, unlike the cost of texts and picture messaging). When you check in you get given towel cards and a wifi password so just go down to your concierge and check the log-in details. I'd heard you could only register 1 device for the free wifi, but because I went and quizzed our concierge, he said that was fine, and you click on the wifi package you want to "buy" (in our case the 2 week package as we were there for 11 nights). It gets put onto your bill at the end, but because you've cleared it with the concierge it will be deducted as part of your anniversary package. As part of the package you also get a free romantic dinner on the beach - 4 courses, all very lovely - which you go and book through the concierge. likewise a romantic breakfast in the room and couples massage (though we didn't do either of these).
Regarding tipping, you get great service from everyone and nobody is overtly looking for a tip, but a judicious 100 peso note here and there (just over £5) to the maid, or to the waitress on the beach gets you the most amazing service. For example on the beach if you tip 100 pesos you'll have the waitress swinging by every 10 minutes to check if you need another drink, and bringing you plates of chips and guacamole without being asked. Its great!
You will be asked by the concierge if you want to go and attend a "short presentation" about the Karisma group, allowing you to get discounted rates on future visits. The concierge assured me this would only be half an hour and seemed mystified when i said no. Various friends we met over there had gone along to the presentation (one couple did it so that they would get a romantic dinner on the beach), and it was an hour and a half out of their lives with a request for them to stump up a big whack of cash there and then in order to become "members" of the group and access discounted rates. This might be worthwhile if you plan to visit every year, but for us it was a one-off holiday, rather than a regular occurence, and I'm glad I didn't waste my time going to it.
There is alot of speculation about the impact of the new block which is being built, and is due to open 1st May. It is certainly a large block of rooms, at the end of the resort nearest reception. There is talk of reception moving up to the Spa area and the current lobby being turned into a new restaurant, and also a new, large pool being built, as well as the beach being extended to cope with the new capacity. The service you receive at this hotel is superb and they go the extra mile to make their guests happy, so I think they will pull out all the stops to integrate the new building as well as they can, but until the new additional facilities are all in place to cope with the extra guests I don't know if it will put a strain on the existing restaurant, bar and beach capacities.
We booked deep sea fishing and diving with Pablo at the V-Aquatics hut on the beach. All very easy and good value. there are all sort of trips you can book through him (on land as well as off) and it seems better value than the Thomsons trips.
We had upgraded to Premium on the Thomson flight and I think this was money well spent, as you get better seats (though still not particularly comfortable), free food and drink, and better choice of entertainment. The is one toilet in the premium section and that is at the front left of the plane on a 767, so if you are upgrading and you get to pick your seat then try and go for the left side of the plane, because if you are on the right, the cabin crew don't always let you cut through the galley to get to the toilet and you have to walk back down the plane to the more crowded ones in the main body of the aircraft. Just a small point, but worth knowing. Also the bulkhead seats at the front have much more legroom, though you've got to be really quick to get that, as soon as your email comes in from Thomson 90 days before your holiday saying you can pick your seat!.
The dress code in restaurants is a big subject of discussion on Trip Advisor - basically women can get away with anything, and as long as men have a collar on their shirt (it can be a polo shirt if you want) that's fine. We'd expected it to be a bit more stuffy than it was, and were surprised at the number of younger couples there were, which was great.
This was the holiday of a lifetime for me and I would go back in a flash. My favourite holiday ever.

Room Tip: swim-ups gaurantee you your own sunbed outside your room whenever you want it, and offer a bit more...

I stayed here from April 1st to the 3rd. And I will tell I learned about a whole new level of service from this hotel and it's staff. Everyone was totally amazing at this hotel. The food was top notch, the room was luxurious, and comfortable. I have been to this area of Mexico 14 times and let me tell you no one does food service and friendliness like Karisma resorts, No one. I had a small issue when I was there and the front desk manager Gerardo Miranda sure did fix the problem for me in a huge way. All I can really say is that his kindness Blew me away! And because of what he did I am going to tell everyone I know at work and n my personal life to go to an El dorado resort. I have never never been to a place that went this far out of there way to make you happy. Book the El Dorado Seasides Suites or any of Karisma's hotels. They will exceed you expectation. I honestly will be a customer for life. The l Dorado is my second home. The best place I have ever been and it's every thing to do with the staff. Thank you again Gerado, you made my holiday!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! This place makes your dreams come true, it was heaven!

Got back from El Dorado a week ago and would do anthing to be back there! It is absolute heaven - I cant understand how anyone could find fault with this hotel. We stayed in the 'basic' room, which has its own jacuzzi, enormous (very comfy) bed, good size balcony, lots of wardrobe space, lovely big shower and double sink. The swim-up rooms looked lovely but to be honest the beach/pool areas are so heavenly I cant see the value in paying extra, aside from the 'novelty factor'.

The entire resort is immaculate, there isn't a single leaf out of place, and is lovely and shady under the coconut trees as you wander about. There is a great program of activities - I did yoga classes most days, my boyfriend played volleyball/football on the beach - but its so lovely and relaxing it would be easy to spend the whole time lying about on various hammocks and sunbeds, being waited on hand and foot by the wonderful staff!

We thought the food was lovley - theres an italian, mexican, modern continental, oriental and 'garden' restaurant - plus a beach BBQ and beach-side pizzeria/burger/salad outdoor restaurant during the day. We ate at all the restaurants - all had beautifully presented, wonderful food. Equivalent to eating in a top end restaurant in the UK. We had 3 courses most evenings (both because we could, and because it was so nice you wanted to try everything!) and at no point were we even remotely hungry!

In honesty I could rave about this hotel all day - please just go ahead and book and see for yourself.

One small point to make - they are currently doing some building work (if you've already booked and are doing a 'pre-flight' trip advisor read - please dont worry!!! Its all well away from the pools/beach/restaurants etc and will have zero impact on your stay) - and the resort will be bigger once its complete. However we also noticed they're building extra swimming pools, extending the beach and building extra restaurants/bars so I cannot see this being detrimental to the resort. They do every thing so, so well, I really cannot see them getting this in any way 'wrong'. Also, the hotel was 95% full when we stayed and we never struggled to get a space at the beach, table in a restarurant or felt like the resort was in any way busy. It is just a lovely slice of relaxing paradise.

If you have already booked - I am very jealous!! Enjoy!!
If you haven't - go and book, NOW! You will love it.
