Owner description: In the heart of Ireland, just over 1 hour from Dublin lies the town of Kilbeggan, home to the world's oldest distillery, established in 1757. It is the quintessential Irish whiskey distillery - whitewashed walls, weathered slate roof, brick chimney stack, creaking timber water wheel, even regular ghost sightings. This is no mere "visitor centre" but a real working distillery run by a team of young enthusiastic craftspeople (and a few wise old heads too), skilled in the traditional ways of making Irish whiskey. Open 7 days (except during Christmas and New Year). On-site Restaurant. Whiskey Bar. Gift Shop. Free parking.

“Once in a Lifetime”
Reviewed September 6, 2013

As we were staying in Athlone we decided that we would give this lovely Distillery a visit and wander around on our own to just soak up and in the experience. As we will probably never get the opportunity to go through another distillery we made the most of it.

We caught the bus and that in itself was a good experience and the countryside was, as Ireland usually is, “green”. It has been raining the previous day but our luck was in and our tour around was dry and we were able to take our time and we really had a good time. I took heaps of photos and this is only a few of them. After spending 2.5 hours just wandering around and having come to the end we went in to get our tasting glasses, which are included in the entrance fee, and well worth it. Mind you it was just the beginning of our 8 week tour and I looked after them carefully and they arrived back in Western Australia safe and sound.

The tastings were done by Aleisha and Carol two very delightful ladies and we had such a wonderful time and also had nearly 2 hours to dispose of before the bus was going to take us back to Athlone. So as you can imagine the tastings were all and more than we expected. Best part was that you could even buy more. What a shame we had to catch the bus – we may have literally had to have been poured into the bus otherwise.

This is an interesting and well worthwhile tour to do and of course if you like Irish whiskey then that is even better. I have always preferred Irish to Scotch and it is probably as my family originated from Limerick. Thanks to everyone at Kilbeggan for their courtesy and delightful company.

“Hands down the best!”
Reviewed September 5, 2013

While in Ireland we toured Bushmills, Kilbeggan and Jameson. Kilbeggan by far was the best tour. Our tour guide was very interesting to listen to and knowledgeable. The tour started in the old mill and you can see the old tools/ processes they used, but then you can go next door and see how they do it today! You can get really close and actually see them pour in the yeast and see the reaction with the liquid! You are also allowed to take pictures unlike some other places! At the end we got to sample 4 whiskeys all very good and even take home a souvenir glass. If I had to choose one place to return to it would be this one!

“Great Experience!”
Reviewed September 2, 2013

This was a very interesting place. The tour was great, the guide seemed to be having alot of fun with our group and the lunch was good with surprise entertainment at the finish of passing out instruments to each of our group and a seemingly impromptu jam session. the lovely tasting glass given to each of us was a wonderful souvenir of the time spent there.

“Well Worth A Visit!!”
Reviewed August 24, 2013

We were passing through Kilbeggan and decided to make a visit to the old distillery! It only cost us 8 euro each for entry! We decided to pay the lower price and not have a guide. The leaflet we were given explained everything we needed to know!! The building and the history were very interesting, with displays of the old methods used which included the machinery, the tools and even the renovated water wheel in operation!! After viewing the oldest exhibits we went through to see how the whiskey is distilled...and produced! The smell from the vats was extreme to say the least!! After our tour we went through to the Whiskey Bar for a free taste of Kilbeggan Whiskey, which I have to say was lovely. Once we had tasted the whiskey we were given our Kilbeggan whiskey glasses to keep! So for 8 euros, we got the tour, the whiskey and the glass......now that is value for money!!! We ended our trip by having a lovely meal in the restaurant (no waiting or booking). The staff were all friendly and the food was great!! There is plenty of parking which is also an added bonus!
