The Tesoro is not a 5 star hotel. You will not find a 5 star hotel here in Mexico. The hotel is showing its age but the rooms are very clean as is every inch of this hotel. While the food is better than the other two hotels we have stayed at, it is still buffett food. They do the best they can at making the food good. The presentation of the dining area and food are simply wonderful. Breakfast would be my favorite meal as the cook prepares the omelets right in front of you and it is so good. Sitting out on the terrace in shorts and t-shirt in Jan. eating your meals and there really can't be too much to complain about. Our room air conditioner was noisy but we decided we didn't want to move all our stuff and it helped with the noise from next door when the Park Royal had night time shows that were noisy. I would have liked to hear the waves at night but the hotels on both sides of the Tesoro had noisy air conditioners. I would defineately ask for a room higher than the 3rd floor next time. I have to give the Tesora a 10 for the staff as they are simply the best. In the dining room you will always get a smile from Fernando and Patzy. Whether inside or out around the pool Bertine and Everardo (Ebby) for short were about the nicest guys you will ever meet at any resort. These guys work their tails off and are so happy doing it. We just loved these guys and I can't wait to see them again next year. There really wasn't any thing to complain about with this hotel and if you needed something all you have to do is ask. Also the beds at the hotel are some of the best we have had in all the trips we have taken. They were so comfortable and this comes from someone who has a very bad back. The hotel is alittle farther down the hotel zone but still easy to walk to the flea market or just as easy to hop on the bus and ride down there if you prefer. Do not be afraid to venture down to the restaurants at the market as it is very safe. If you catcht fish take it to Mama Norma and Deborahs and have them fix it for you. For a small fee they will give you rice or vegetables and a baked potatoe. If you don't fish then try Franks down by the market also. Frank is a Canadian who has the most amazing pizza place. The zappitizer is 2 shrimps wrapped in cheese and then wrapped in bacon, baked in a fired oven. The shrimp also comes in a main meal with 3 of these and they are amazing. They are called amazing shrimp!!! Say hey to Frank, his restaurant is great and he has a good story to tell of how he got started. Do not go to the beach to book a fishing trip but go down to Zihua marina and ask on the pier. You do not want to run into Benny on the beach. He may take your money and leave you wishing you were fishing. I recommend you go to Lillys down from the marina on the walk where there are shops and fish market. Ask Lilly if Miguel is about, he has been our captain for two years now and our trips have been amazing. His boat is the Arapara. On Sundays evenings the locals have a festival down at the basketball courts by the marina. The food is so good, it is prepared just like the locals eat it for original Mexican food. The best way to buy is with peso so get your money from the ATM at the bank. You will get the best rate and you are not always guessing how much something cost. The hotel has money to exchange but on the weekends they run out so the bank is your best bet. Don't bring American money as it is a real pain to take to the bank and exchange. They will need a copy of your passport and it is just too much of a hassle. Just let your bank know before you go that you will be in Mexico. The bank there is the best deal all the way around. If you are down at the marina also stop in at Casa Elvira. The bartender makes the best margaritas anywhere. Just across the bridge at the marina is Letys. They have the best coconut shrimps anywhere. If you want to go out on the sailboat for an evening cruise you can't beat the Picante and its crew. We have been on a cruise every year and have not been disappointed. Lastly the beach in front of the hotel is beautiful but we found out first hand last year how dangerous it can be. The waves are bigger and you will be better off to go to Ixtapa Island for calm water or at one on the beaches along the bay in Zihua. It took my husband over 6 months to get over being slammed head down in the sand after a wave took him under. Luckily there is a very good doctor at the hotel who takes care of the hotel zone guest. Just remember that the food is not like at home, you are in Mexico, but they do try to make your stay wonderful. Have reasonable expectations and you will be amazed at these kind people and their hospitality.
