“Honeymoon paradise!”
Reviewed March 26, 2014

This resort was amazing upon arrival! We were greeted with a tasty tropical drink along with a wet towel while we were checking into our room. The lobby staff were all very friendly, our favorite was Fredy who escorted us and our luggage to our room. He spoke English well and enjoyed helping us with our Spanish. Surprisingly with all the guests, he remembered our names and greeted us every day when we passed him in the lobby. The restaurants all had delicious food and the lunch menu options changed daily! There were plenty of food options with the all-inclusive so there was not an issue of eating the same thing every day. Joel worked in each of their different dinner restaurants and was a very attentive server. He was timely, informative, and always let us know what the evening specials were. Very sweet server. The pool atmosphere and swim up bar were a high light of our trip. The waterslides were lots of fun, even for the adults! And Simon was our go to bartender at the swim up bar, he was lots of fun! The Entertainment Staff members were very entertaining (go figure) lot's of activities to participate in through out the day, but we never felt forced to join when we didn't want to. Plenty of shopping close by to the hotel within walking distance (literally starts right across the street!). The hotel is right on the beach and there is easy access to parasail, rent wave runners, or walk to other hotels and restaurants along the beach. We also did the couples dinner on the beach and worked with the photographers to get some personal beach photos taken. Both of these were well worth the extra price! There were elevator problems when we were there, two of the four were always working, and never had problems. The two closest to the front desks experienced issues while we were there, but we just used the two that were working. Sometimes we were aware if one wasn't working but it would have been nice if they had a sign up. All 4 elevators are pretty close to each other so it was still easy to get to your room and the lobby. Overall, everything was a great deal and well worth the price. We enjoyed every minute of our honeymoon thanks to the location of this resort, atmosphere and likable staff. We will definitely be returning!

My husband and I just got back two nights ago from the Dorado, I cannot say enough about this resort, it was amazing..and yes I AM picky. food..room, resort...staff, entertainment..all 10 stars in my opinon, the resort was spotless, we met so many wonderful people there, its a small resort, which I believe adds to the atmosphere of this resort. Everyone just gets to know everyone else, I have stomach issues and never had a problem finding something to eat. My husband and I have a rule, that we never go to any resort twice...well we will be back to Dorado...and soon, I would suggest this resort to any of my family or friends in a flat second...thank you to all the staff for making our well needed vacation the best ever. my only complaint was having to go home..Kat and Mike

Room Tip: Have fun at this resort....its hard not to

We returned 2 days ago, after a two week stay. I wish it had been longer. We have stayed in many all inclusives and we so enjoyed our stay. The hotel is one of the smaller that we have stayed in, but we enjoyed this aspect as we met so many nice people.

We did not find the elevators a problem. Yes, the towel situation is like any resort, but felt by only allowing towels on the chairs after seven a.m., it helped and on a few days, staff removed towels from chairs after about 4 hours when the chairs were not used. When we couldn't find chairs the staff found chairs that we could use. The staff everywhere were so pleasant, especially, Felix, when we had to change our room due to a mechanical problem. With help from the staff we were moved in under an hour. Gersain, the pool waiter, is terrific, along with Blanca of the entertainment staff. Mario, who ran the elevator in the evening was so pleasant and had a great sense of humour. There was not a staff member who did not smile. I could name many more staff members who went out of their way to please the guests.

The food in all the restaurants was good and "Windows," the buffet, always had a good variety. Loved having a choice of places to eat for lunch and dinner. We also enjoyed the nights where the garden area was decorated and one could eat outdoors.

I have never written a review for a resort in 15 years, but felt this hotel earned a good review.

So hope to return next year.

This resort is absolutely stunning! It was very clean... the main lobby, the front entrance, the pool area, beach and hotel rooms. The staff is outstanding, probably the best service I have ever received anywhere. They provide pool service, beach service as well as a swim up bars and a few bars near the beach and pool.

There is lots of fun stuff to do everyday, and there are always people at the front area to recommend great places to visit and call cabs.

One of the biggest bonuses about this hotel was you didnt have to wear a chunky wrist band the entire time. They have a different system of keeping track of everybody it was so cool. If I visit Ixtapa again I will 100% stay at this resort again.

I have absolutely no complaints about this resort. Check in was fast. No problems with the elevators except one time when too many people crammed in WITH their luggage and it wouldn't open. People, no more than 7 at a time and no heavy suitcases! Restaurants are great--loved not having to make reservations or wear those stupid bracelets. the only restaurant that required long pants for the men was the Italian---well worth it too. No children allowed there. We did the romantic dinner on the beach one night only because we had coupons from Apple and wanted to do something different---not worth the money. Maybe lower the price, add some music---have a violinist or saxaphone player and include a bottle of wine or champagne instead of trying to sell one.
We didn't spend much time on the beach because the surf was so rough. Other than walking it which is fantastic. Did the parasailing one day. Only $20---well worth it. Don't use the ones in front of the hotel. Walk down a bit to the right. there is a group of about 4 guys working together. Felt very safe and trusted them. Also walked farther down the beach to the massage huts---several times that week. Only 150 pesos for a 1 hour massage. Just be prepared that there are up to 6 tables in 1 hut so you may have company!
The entertainment in the evening was ok. Different show every night. They did casino night one night. Only had a few tables set up and when we got there it didn't look like anyone was getting ready to leave so I am guessing it would have been a long time to wait. Maybe add more tables?
We took pesos with us and used instead of US dollar. Best tip, which I found surprising, we exchanged USD at the front desk and got a better exchange than at our bank in the States.
Pool is fabulous. Yes, you have to get up early if you want to play the towel game and save your chairs. Not sure how that will ever change. yes, people reserve their spot and then don't sit there sometimes until afternoon. We are guilty of that on a few days---only because we were in the pool and didn't want to get out. Here's one thing to know about the pool. If you are trying to protect yourself from too much sun by wearing a shirt, it has to be a "swim" shirt. My husband was wearing a t-shirt and was told he had to take it off as it was not allowed----now how stupid is that rule???? Not sure of the reasoning behind that one.
Walked into town a few times. Very safe and not too many vendors bothering us. There is also a very nice walking trail that goes for miles in either direction just outside of the hotel gates. If you go, bring water.
Took the cab into Zihua 2 days to go to La Gatas Beach. Only 80 pesos for 4 of us and dropped us right at the pier. If you want to get in the water and can't do it at the hotel, this is a great option. There are little restaurants and bars lining the beach and it is a calm, safe place for swimming or snorkeling and for the kids to play in the sand.
Everyone at Sunscape works very hard to make your vacation wonderful. The rooms are very clean. They come around in the early evening to see if you need any more towels or anything else. And the towels are a great size. not little skimpy ones! The beds are firm but we didn't mind them. My problem was with the firm pillow. The hotel people in the lobby are helpful but be careful. They will engage you in conversation and then try to get you to go to their sales presentation for the club program. A quick no thank you does the job to get them to stop.
You can't go wrong by staying at Sunscape. It is a great all inclusive resort with a hard working staff, great food, and a perfect location.

When we plan our trips to Mexico, we always check the calendar to ensure that we do not book during periods when the resort will be packed due to civic, school, or religious holidays. In our experience, avoiding peak periods is the key to ensuring an enjoyable vacation experience.

We visited Sunscape Dorado for the first time, February 28 to March 7, 2014; travelling with another couple in the 55+ age group. As noted by other Reviewers, the Sunscape Dorado is not a new resort, but the entire property is well maintained, and very, very clean.

In Deluxe Oceanview room # 1218 (which is actually on the 5th floor), the air conditioner worked well, the shower had good pressure and was always hot, the mini-bar was restocked every day, and we had a wonderful view of the sunset. Our king sized bed was very firm (just like the one we have at home), and we had no trouble sleeping. Most nights there was some noise from activities on the grounds, or the Eclipse Disco, but after 11:00 PM it either stopped or was muted. Apparently all rooms at Sunscape that have a single kig-sized bed, also have a door to the adjoining room. We noticed a little bit of noise from the other room, but only when the occupants were standing and talking right in front of the door. We could not hear their TV or conversation elsewhere in their room. The Housekeeping staff did an excellent job, and provided a "turn-down" service late in the afternoon.

We found the food quality and variety to be very good, and very consistent. And we thoroughly enjoyed dining out of doors. DaMario (with it's slightly more stringent dress code) is the only restaurant that is completely enclosed and air-conditioned. We ate dinner at all of the a-la-carte restaurants, and found it hard to pick one that was superior to the others. However our daily luncheons at the Bluewater Grill were probably the most enjoyable. We will fondly remember coming up from the heat on the beach at 1:00PM, and enjoying a liesurely white-table-cloth lunch in the shade and cool breeze of the Bluewater.

Breakfast at the Windows buffet (with seating in the outside courtyard of Tamarindo) offered a wide range of food choices. But like most buffets the quality deteriorates the longer the food sits in the steam table. If you don't mind standing in line for 5 minutes, you can get eggs, omelettes, pancakes and crepes at the two "short-order" stations.

During the week we were at Sunscape, they offered 3 separate buffet style dinners; served from the Tamarindo restaurant, with tables of 10 set up on the lawn. They do not provide a written menu so you have to explore the entire buffet (which may be set up in 3 or 4 stations) in order to see the entire selection. We particularly enjoyed the Mexican Fiesta night, but failed to seek out all of the buffet stations; we discovered some additional food choices on our way out.

We did not spend any time poolside; because the resort packs the lounge chairs so tightly that it is hard to move around (and there is almost no breeze from the ocean). As a result we have no comments on the day-time entertainment.

We chose instead to have one member of our group awake at 6:00 AM and go down to the beach to reserve a palm-frond cabana for 4. If you want a spot, you have to get there by 6:30 AM, and take enough beach-bags, tee-shirts or books to cover the Adirondach style chairs you want. You can also get get recliner lounges from the stack at the foot of the stairs next to the Baracuda Bar. Make sure to put some of your personal stuff on them, and do not leave your palm-front cabana until the Security Guard comes by at 7:00 AM to record your room number. If you are not there, and demand for spaces is high, they will remove your stuff and give the spot to the person who is physically present. Once you have been formally recorded as the holder of that spot, you can go and get towels, etc. During the week we were at Sunscape, there was a contingent of "early-risers" who sat on the beach, in the dark, with their e-readers, every morning.

We thoroughly enjoyed the beach at Sunscape. It is almost flat, and the sandy bottom goes well out into the ocean. The ocean is cool (but not cold), and if you enjoy boogey-boarding the surf is well suited. At a brisk pace, you can walk the length of the beach (from marina entrance at the North end to the creek at the South end) in about 30 minutes. The heat of the day is most noticeable from 11:30 AM to 3:30 PM, and during those hours we were glad to have the shade of our palm-frond cabana, and the breeze from the ocean. From 4:00 PM until sundown, the beach is truly wonderful.

As always, we enjoyed meeting the Staff of the resort, and their friendly, attentive service is one of the main reasons we will return (and recommend the Sunscape to our friens and family). We found that the pace / speed of service was a bit more relaxed in Ixtapa than in Cancun or Puerto Vallarta, but the friendliness of the staff and attention to our needs was still very good.

Our vote for Employee of the Month goes to Adilene; who served us lunch every day in the Bluewater Grill. She always had a smile, and was willing to chat with us; even though she was very busy.

Other Staff members who helped make our visit safe and enjoyable were:
- Javier Sr. at Windows breakfast buffet service.
- Bernice at Bluewater Grill luncheon service.
- Benito and Juan at Gohan Suchi dinner service.
- Simon, the Barman at the Manatee
- Mario, the young man who operates the lobby elevator (and has a wonderful sense of humor)
- Patricia, the young woman who cleans public bathrooms (all day, every day).

We enjoyed our visit to Sunscape Dorado, and believe it was good value for the money we spent. We will recommend this resort to our family and friends.

This was the first time for my husband and I at this resort. Everything was very clean, staff was nice, helpful, and have a good command of English so communication was never a problem. Restaurants were nice and the food was good. The pool area was well kept and the pool bathroom were very clean. We were able to leave our towels on the chairs in the morning and there is a staff member who will reserve the seats for you in case someone decides to take it while your walking, eating, napping in room, etc.The beach is wonderful to walk on but a little risky for swimming. Do not be afraid to go to "21" and get a $15 dollar-1 hr massage. I would rate it up there with the massages you get at the resort spas. It is about a 10 min walk on the beach going to the right. The only thing is that you get massaged in a room with other people but you are in your swimsuit so there is no exposure to others and you are not even aware of who is in there and who leaves. Sunscape Dorado is very close to shopping in Ixtapa-right across the street! Do not forget to go to the Generals, Franks for pizza and the blue shrimp for huge Margaritas! If you like deep sea fishing, book a tour on the boat (Orion). My husband and 4 others went out and landed a 12 ft, 220 lb Marlin!! The crew was exceptional and very nice.. Sunscape Dorado cooked it up for us that night-absolutely wonderful!
While we were there we became club members. If you like to travel a lot I would suggest talking with them for the discount savings plan and resort benefits.

There are only a couple things I can say were negatives-
1) The men have to wear sleeves in the restaurants at all times. I could see maybe at dinner but for breakfast and lunch?
2) Our door to our room was very tempermental and had to call front desk 4 times to get in. They eventually fixed the problem but we asked for and received a room change by then.
3)The elevators were a catastrophy! Out of the 4 elevators, 1 was down upon arrival, another went down shortly after that and never worked again, and the 2 remaining were iffy at best. Usually overcrowded and at times the 2 remaining would get stuck also. The resort stated they are having all 4 of them replaced instead of getting them fixed so that should solve that problem.
4) Housekeeping was very good on the 14th floor. She was in there right away in the morning making beds and giving us fresh towels We moved to the 19th floor after our 2nd day and we wouldn't get housekeeping in our room until 3 pm or later. So if you want to come back and take a shower or a nap be prepared for the maid to show up at that time. Also, hang your towels up just in case you need them for a shower late in afternoon.
5) They play the same Mexican music over and over again at the pool. We did get them to play some other types of music for a little while but then back to the same music with the same beat. Not conducive for a party time at the pool.

All in all this is a fantastic resort and I would not hesitate to go back again.

Room Tip: All the rooms have a nice view of the ocean.
