“Still great but needs some changes”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 3, 2013

We have stayed at the Dorado for many years-always in January. We are not overjoyed with the AI but since we prefer not to leave the hotel for breakfast and lunch anyway, the evening meals and entertainment(plus cost) are the only differences for us. The rooms have all been redone, are very clean and the staff is very prompt to make any adjustments you request. Breakfast buffet is great. Lunch we have always eaten at the now Blue Water Grill and when we first arrived in January they had no sandwiches on the menu--more meal type choices--but the sandwich menu came back--but no club sandwiches nor tuna salad which hopefully they will also add. The evening meals we feel do need improvement. First-they were having grass problems in the Garden area(first time in all of our years this has been an issue) so Fiesta night, Carribean night, any entertainment evenings were held inside in one of the salons on the mezzanine. We did not care for this arrangement---even if the grassy area was unavailable, outdoors makes all of these events more enjoyable. Last year they had entertainment at the Mexican restaurant with the stage put up in that area and it was fine---or moving them to the beach would have been fine --- we(and many other returnees) do not want to be indoors for these events. The Italian Buffet held once a week in Windows(breakfast restaurant) was very good both times we were there. Oceana is still having service problems this year as they did in 2012 also. The BlueWater Grill has a nice evening menu and the service is good. We went across the street to the restaurants for several evening meals and found most Dorado guests were also doing this. Wonder if they should consider a plan with just breakfast and lunch and perhaps a certain number of evening meals included as many people seem to feel the cost was too great when the evening meals and entertainment doesn't meet their expectations. We will return but they do not have all the bugs ironed out in their change to AI as of yet. The beach palapas and pool chairs seemed to be more of an issue this year than in recent years. When we arrived they were not permitting people out of the hotel until 7AM to reserve either area then they relaxed this and said IF you stay with your towels you could go out earlier and by the time our 2 weeks ended(even though they were trying not to let people take towels to their rooms) many chairs by the pool were "toweled" by 5AM and no one showed up for hours to use the chairs. The palapas were not taken as early but again some mornings towels had been left all night in that area and were not picked up. They did have you sign up for the palapas starting about 7AM and we had no problem but seems to us it was reasonable to say people must stay with towels until 7AM and if they don't, security should definitely remove towels from both areas. Great weather and another enjoyable vacation but some changes need to be implemented.

First all inclusive holiday we ever took. Booked 26 days at this resort not knowing anything about it. Could have been a disaster, but no it was fantastic. The staff was very friendly and courteous, the food was great, the weather unbelievable, the beech, ocean and sunsets were breath taking. A very good variety of eating places at the resort and many many more with in walking distance. Not one bad experience in 26 days. We were pampered right from the time we got there, until we left. I cannot say enough about how happy we were with the total experience. Would we go back? In a heart beat. Give this one a try. I think you will agree with us.

Room Tip: Great ocean views

Well where do I start...............we arrived on Wednesday, BUT our luggage did not arrive until the next day. The hotel staff was very helpful in making sure our luggage arrive to the hotel and then it was taken straight to our rooms. That was the only major issue we had the whole 10 days we were there. The staff greeted us with fruit punch and a nice cold wash towel to wipe our faces and that felt really nice. Now I did notice as soon as you sign in you are greeted by another person that wants you to buy some kind of tour. You have to be bold and tell them you just arrived and want to be left alone. Our floor was on the 11th floor at the end. Some people say you can hear the bar across the street at all hours in the night, we heard nothing at all.

The Resort: The resort is very nice. I love the plants that hang over each floor as you looked up from the center of the resort. Everything was very clean and you saw the staff cleaning all the time. The gift shop inside the resort is very small, but has your basic needs. The resort also has free internet and two computers for everyone's use. Sometimes though you will have to wait in line to use the computer. I will have to tell you the one elevator to the left is a stubborn one. We would push 11 for our floor and it would stop and then pass that floor and take you to 21. That one elevator has some issues that they need to llok at. We still used it though because it was a hit or miss when it would go crazy.

The Rooms: The bed is some what hard, but I like it that way most of the time. You can ask for them to but more foam down if you want. I learned that they like to tuck the pillows small, so you just need to shake them back to original size. The mini bar is stocked and they will stock it every morning. The shower is very nice and has a powerful shower head. The room we had did not have much drawer space or closet space, but we managed just fine. They is a locking safe in each room and very easy to use.

The Dining: The food is great in all the resturants, however the service is SLOW. I was told by other guests that the staff is still getting use to the "all inclusive" as this resort hasn't always been all inclusive. All resturants require the men to wear a shirt with sleeves. If you go to one and forget to put on a shirt with sleeves, not to worry..........they have a few for you to choose from:) The only one that requires men to wear pants is the Italian resturant. Again, the food is great but the service is very slow and that makes people a little testy. Not all restruants are open the same night. You will have to look at your "schedule of events" that they leave in your room during turn down service. Sometimes you will find it under your door. Make sure you look at that schedule because it will tell you which resturant is open and the times. It will also list the all the events happening that day.

Entertainment Staff: Although there are some activities going on during the day around the pool, there is not much during the night time. It's a very relax resort. They do have a couple evening activities like casino night, or a show like American Idol, Anything goes. that is about it. Most everyone I talked to would go right across the street to the local night club and have fun there. However the actual Entertainment team was very friendly and would always start a conversation with you. They always make sure you are having a good time. The waiters around the pool are fantastic!!! You don't have to tip them but once you do...........they are your friend forever:) Your drink become stronger:) There is one bar that stays open late and those bartendars are super! They always have smiles on their faces no matter how crazy the guest may get. We never had one problem with the waiters or bartendars around the pool.

The Pools: their is a kiddie pool that no one ever uses. All the kids seem to hang out around the pool with the two slides. All the adults hang out around the swimup bar in the pool. We call this the adult pool:) You do have to reserve your chairs early!!! My husband and I were up at 7 am every morning to go down and claim our chairs. However their are a lot of people who get up even earlier than that to claim theirs. The security is not happy about it, but the whole 10 days I never saw them take anyones towels. Now they do take your name and room number if you want to reserve space under the stationed umbrellas. If you are gone more than two hours that space becomes some elses. You most check in with the security if you leave to let him know you are coming back and what time. All other chairs are first come. People where taking their towels back to their rooms at night so they had them for morning so they can claim their chairs by 6 am.

One thing we noticed was that the adult pool kept getting bees in it. The bees are not dead! My husband was stung by one as he was getting out of the pool. Staff was notified of this and they had a maintenace guy with a long net to scoop the bees out of the pool. So I would say be careful and watch out for the bees. Not many of them, but there are some and they sting.

Our group of 6 did a sunset tour with Picante, I believe. That was great. We had a great time and the sunset wasn't as great that night as the others, BUT we still had a sunset and a great time. They fed you a awesome chicken kabob with veggies and of course whatever you wanted to drink.

The Spa at the resort is very nice. I won a 30 minute spa treatment and it was great, however for $20.00 you can get a GREAT massage down on the beach just a few yards from the resort. Hut # 7 was our hut for the massage. They did a wonderful massage and YES it is a full hour. I timed it myself.

Right across the street are shops and just a little down the road is their local "flee market" where you can bargin with them. I will tell you there is a nice jewlery store across the street called: Ruby's. They have really nice silver jewlery and the main thing for the purest silver is to see the "925" stamped on the inside of your jewlery. The gentleman there was really nice and actually gave us a really good deal. Of course if you pay cash they will give you even a bigger bargin. We paid with credit card. A couple of our friends went across to a pizza place for dinner one night and they said it was very very good. The pizza is made from a stone oven.

The beach is beauitful and clean. The sunsets are amazing as well.

In all we had a great time and the resort was really nice. We would go back for sure! Hopefully though the service will get better. That is really the only complaint we have.

I would recommend this resort to everyone! It really is a great resort!

We stayed at Suncape week of Jan. 13-20. Our room was great, firm bed, cold frig, big shower. Room was cleaned at 10:30 sharp, great job, don't forget to tip them. Upgraded to full ocean view, rm1217, well wirth the money.Stunning view of sunset over rocks. Sound of waves puts you to sleep at night. The public areas were cleaned and well maintanied.

On the beach there were chairs with cushions, very comfy. Plenty of shade, get there early if you want a spot. Beach and weather were perfect. Drink service was excelent on beach. Lots of action, parasailing, jet skis, venders, people watching.

Breakfast was great with many choices. Dinner food and service was ok at best. Meat and fish are over powered with gravey. Wanted grilled fish! Servers seemed to be overwelmed when restaurants were full. The indoor buffet for dinner, had a good Cuban band, too loud and to hot for indoors. The evening would have been wounderful had it been outdoors.

We enjoyed our stay at Sunscape , will return again. Many more positives than negitives.

Winter vacation away from the Minnesota cold and snow...
The hotel was very clean, beds somewhat hard, the waitstaff and bartenders were very friendly.
The food was ok, more beer choices would have been nice.
85 and sunny everyday, just what I needed..!!!
The only real issues that I had were, you could not get a beach chair, every morning after breakfast, we would head down to the beach, all chairs had towels on them. Seems quests would get up very early, put their towel on the chair and go back to bed or eat.
And they were pretty good about the vacation time share thing, not too pushy.
The pools were awesome, swim up bar, and the Bar-racuda were great places to relax.
Nice clean beaches, just across the street was the town of Ixtapa, so you could just walk to a new resturant and shop if you wanted to get away from the beach.

Room Tip: Pool or Ocean side is recommended. We were on the 16th floor (they started from 10 though), the vie...

My wife and I have stayed at the Dorado Pacifico in the past when it was NOT all inclusive. After two years passing, we decided to return to try the new Sunscape Dorado Pacifico that is now all inclusive. We came with many reservations, but Trip Advisor reviews seemed to support that folks were happy. We read all reviews from the past year before making our decision to return. We were glad we returned..........

Upon arrival we were greeted by new and old staff. Our check-in was smooth and our Ocean View Room was ready so we could go directly to our room, even though it was only 11 am. Our room was on the western side, #1718, and we found it was clean and very comfortable. During our stay we found the room very spacious, AC kept the room cool and maid service was excellent with turn-down service in the evening. The shower was large, plenty of hot water and ample toiletries provided by the hotel. Towels were large and plenty of them. We had a fridge stocked with beer, soda and juice. The room- darkening drapes were a plus for sleeping in. There was also plenty of storage drawers and ample closet space. There was also a digital safe in the closet.

The best part of the Dorado was the staff....... from housekeeping to bartenders, they all were happy, friendly, very efficient, and willing to please you the guest. I could go on and on with examples of their kindness, but I will only say ALL of them were the best.

The pool entertainment staff does need extra mention. While in the pool/beach area, this staff went out of their way to learn your name, greet you each day and include you in their activities throughout the day. These young ladies and gentlemen worked long hard hours to make you feel special in the pool area.

We found the food at this all -inclusive to be better than most resorts we have stayed at before:
The Oceania was a seafood restaurant that provided you with great seafood dishes as well as several chicken entrees. From the appetizers to the desserts, they were all nicely presented and the tastes were awesome.
The Bluewater Grill was open for lunch and dinners. This restaurant had a great variety at lunch and was a super steakhouse at dinner. Again, they had a wide variety on their menus and it was very tasty. When you are at a resort for two weeks, you get to try almost everything on the menu. We did just that and were not disappointed.
The best restaurant was on the mezzanine level. This was the adult only Italian Restaurant, Da Mario. Here the menu was basically Italian. Everything we tried was very good and nicely presented. Along with the adults only, you had to adhere to a Casual Elegant dress code.
Windows, the buffet, served a different theme each day/evening. Here the food was more general with plenty of food for the hungriest of eaters. Breakfast was here every morning. From the omelette bar, crepe and pancakes being freshly prepared, fresh fruits, breads, bacon, juices, coffee and pastries, it was the best way to start your day.
Lastly, the Barefoot Grill offered burgers, fries, chips and cheese, hot dogs or fish sticks from noon to 6 pm each day. The Coco Cafe opened at 7 am for hot coffee, freshly made with each cup, and a variety of pastries, fruits and sandwiches until the evening.

There were three bars for your favorite drinks throughout the day. Each had excellent bartenders and waiters to serve you at the bar, pool or beach. Here you could also get premium liquor by asking for it. We enjoyed a Baileys Irish Cream on the rocks every evening after dinner.

The Dorado also provides an program for younger children called the Explorer's Club. They do a variety of activities with kids from 9 am to 10 pm each day.

Other activities worth noting were the Manager's Cocktail party, Casino Night, wine and tequila tastings, the Water Walk, and evening beach programs such as the Packer football game and Golden Globe awards. Here food and drinks were provided while we viewed the TV programs on a very big screen. Most guests attended.

The Dorado does not use wrist bans, but asks your room number when you enter a restaurant. Also the hotel security is very visible and all use two way radios to communicate with each other.

While at the Dorado, go across the street to the Plaza area to do all your shopping. The shop owners are happy to see you and you will find all your extra needs there. If you want to go for a meal outside the hotel, this area provides many fine examples of true Mexican restaurants. The Blue Shrimp is our favorite just for the variety in which they prepare shrimp, even Tequila Shrimp right at your table.

If you want to go by bus or taxi, visit the Mexican city of Zihuatanejo just 4 miles over the mountain. This is a true fishing village with the authentic Mexican atmosphere.

In conclusion, we met many very nice guests from Canada and the Midwestern US. Also our hats off to Jesus Garcia and his staff for making the Sunscape Dorado Pacifico what we feel is the best vacation hotel in Ixtapa Mexico

Room Tip: When booking a room, get an ocean view as the noise from the next door bar is very loud in the eveni...

We are happy members of Unlimited Vacation Club and have visited various beautiful AM Resorts. I was shocked when I arrived at this hotel. I could not believe it was part of AMresorts. Completely contrary to the previous hotels we had visited, it was run down, poorly decorated and simply was not inviting. Too many people for such a small pool area not to mention very unattractive and uncomfortable poolside furniture. All of the towels including the ones in the room were old and falling to shreds. In general I found the hotel had very poor maintenance and I never felt comfortable. Sometimes the service was excellent and other times terrible. Kudos to the UVC staff. They were very attentive, friendly, helpful and obviously apologetic. The one good review I can give the hotel is that the food was very good. Sorry AMResorts. I love your hotels, just not this one.
