Quick easy check in, nice lobby area, clean rooms, but lots of stairs. Pool area is very clean but look out for the wasps, crazy amount of wasps especially around the bar area. Beach area in front of the pool.
The buffets are average, we were disappointed with the variety and don't get to excited for the a la cart restaurants, they are buffets as well.
The Oyster bar was a decent restaurant whoever they donts have oysters.
The staff was all very friendly and eager to please
The best part was the amazing New Years party they put on. The food was excellent, live band, party favours the whole deal. This was the highlight of our week.

My family of 4 spent Christmas week at the Azul. The resort is very much geared for families with children of all ages. There were lots of activities for a busy 11 year old boy. Pools are clean and big with something for everyone from a kiddie pool, water park with many slides for younger kids, adult pool and several family pools. There was no problem getting chairs, although if you have a preference of where you would like to sit you will need to reserve with towels early. The beach sand is interesting with flecks of gold in it. The waves are big enough at times for kids to boogie board. The food is good enough with plenty of choices. All of the staff are friendly and helpful and committed to making everyone's stay as comfortable as possible. We stayed in a junior suite, which means a separate bedroom with a king bed - a pull out sofa - dining table and kitchen with fridge, coffee maker, toaster, blender and 2 burner cooktop. It was spacious and very nice. Wifi in the room is available for $15 per day, but is free in public areas. The hotel is not close to downtown Ixtapa - at least not within walking distance. Playa Linda is just beyond the pier and is definitely worth the 5 minute walk. There are some on-the-beach bars, little shops, a crocodile enclosure, and the waves are a bit bigger.
We had a super vacation and would certainly recommend the Azul!

My husband and I travelled here in December 2014 with another couple (all in our 40s - left our kids at home). My hubby and I had stayed here with our kids 11 years ago when the Azul was nearly new (and owned by the Melia group). Back then the property was rated 5 stars and we thought it was just OK. We couldn't have been happier with this trip.

We were the first group of Canadians to arrive with Sunwing this Season. At the time we were there, the resort was primarily Mexican clientele, but started to fill up with Canadians as the week went on. I thought the staff did a wonderful job of including everyone. Everyone was friendly. I always find it funny when I read reviews that say "The hotel in Mexico had too many Mexican people" Really? Sigh....moving on......

First of all, the staff here was out of this world. From the bar and restaurant staff to the house keeping, front desk and activities teams, everyone at this resort went above and beyond to ensure we were comfortable and happy on our vacation. (Special shout out to Jesus in Costa Azul, Phil in the lobby bar and Victor and Osmar around the pool bar) Really, we cannot say enough about these people - truly wonderful! (as a side note, the majority of the staff speaks English very well and is more than happy to help you practice your Spanish!!)

If you are travelling with children, your family will definitely appreciate everything that is offered here for kids (even teenagers). We didn't use the kids clubs this trip but our daughter loved it last time and from what we could tell there has been much improvement since then. The water park is great for kids up to maybe 10 or 12. The club had a schedule of activities every day and it seemed like there were always kids participating. For teens there is a rock climbing wall, great activities around the pool, rifle shooting, kayaking, snorkeling, pool and ping pong tables and much more. The shows were apparently great as well, but they started a little too early for us as we had dinner every night around 8. The hotel also has a wonderful Eco Gym with a very impressive schedule of classes (TRX! Zumba!). We had big plans to attend some of them, but sadly, laziness took over.

We found the grounds and pools to be kept very clean. Literally the minute you put an empty glass down, someone is there to pick it up. The drinks were pretty good as well with some good brands like Smirnoff, absolute, Tanqueray, Bacardi etc. (REAL Baileys for my coffee in the morning! Ask for a cup of it in the lobby the night before and keep it in your fridge for the morning.....mmmmmm) Because the staff speaks English so well - if you can describe a drink to them, they will make it. (No Rye though...but we have come to expect that at most places. They have Canadian Mist - a blend. Not nearly the same)

The food was great - no complaints. There were many restaurant choices - all with different schedules, so there was never a time when you couldn't get something to eat. You could even get breakfast up til noon in one of the restaurants, so if you have a "sleep in" morning you don't have to worry about missing breakfast. We had absolutely no issues booking at the a la carte restaurants and booked them on our first day for the entire week. We were told we could either book 3 dinners at our resort or 2 at our resort and 1 at the Azul Grande next door. We LOVED Costa Azul so much we went back twice. We also tried the Italian at the Azul Grande - also very good. We decided we wanted to try the Oyster Bar on our last night and even though we had already used our 3 reservations for the week, they had no problems giving us a table at our usual 8pm dinner time. Sadly the Oyster Bar was our only disappointment of the week (food mediocre at best...really good salad though) but the view (on the pier) was fantastic. The buffet food was good as well. We ate mostly at the indoor "Terazza" Restaurant for breakfast and lunch. The Beach Grill had burgers, dogs, pizza, fried chicken and really good fries as well as chips and salsa/guacamole and salad. The ice cream at the Beach Grill is DELISH! DIfferent flavour every day! They also have a "dinner show" on Saturday nights - outside between the Azul and the Grand. It is buffet but kind of fun. Worth doing for a change of scenery (you need to book in advance)

Our room was in the main building (1810) and had a fabulous ocean view. No balcony, but there were sliding "doors" to a Juliette Balcony so you could still get the balcony feel. Beds were oddly comfortable as we usually find that the beds in Mexico are like concrete. Also an assortment of pillows with different "firmness". My husband and I slept like babies every night. We didn't hear a thing. There was a fridge and coffee maker in our room and every day housekeeping left two fresh bottles of water. There is also a safe and it was large enough to fit our laptop (as a note, we sometimes left laptops, cell phones, iPods lying around our room during the day and had no issue with anything going missing, but we did use the safe as well). Room was cleaned promptly every day (literally within minutes of us going down to breakfast). Turndown service with chocolates was also provided every night. We had wifi in our room but we were provided with a password from Sunwing. (Other tour providers may not offer this). Wifi in the lobby as well as all restaurants and even some areas around the pool (no password required). We could Facetime with the kids while sitting around the pool - you definitely don't find that everywhere.

The weather was perfect the entire week - temps in the 30s, and we didn't see a cloud til the last day. If you are a beach person, you probably won't love the beach here - however, the water was the perfect temp for swimming (even at night!) and the bottom is clear and sandy. Jet skis, banana boats and parasailing are available on the beach and we found the cost to be reasonable compared to other places. You can walk to the end of the beach and take a water taxi (40 pesos) over to Azul Island where they have restaurants and golden sand beaches. We did the kayak/snorkeling tour from our hotel (included) and found snorkeling a little challenging with the waves but if you can make your way to the reef there are some fun fish to be seen. There is also a market at the end of the main beach with a huge assortment of trinkets for the souvenir shoppers. (Stop and visit the Crocodiles on your way down the beach)

We ventured into Ixtapa one day on the bus. ($10 pesos for the bus. $180 pesos each way for a cab). The bus is the way to go (even though the bus has no air conditioning. Or doors.) They run on a fairly regular schedule and the trip to Ixtapa takes about 15 minutes. (Another 15-20 mins if you want to go all the way to Zihuatanejo). The town is quite cute and well kept - but you MUST visit Frank's Restaurant. Frank is a transplanted Canadian and his food is AMAZING (the papaya salsa is to die for!)

Overall, we really couldn't have asked for a better place to spend our "last minute" vacay. We loved that the property was away from the busy-ness of the hotel zone. We have travelled extensively through Mexico and the Caribbean and stayed at MANY different all-inclusive places from 3-5 stars. We feel that the Azul Ixtapa delivered a lot of bang for our buck - we would happily come back here again in the future.

We lucked out with our two bedroom. We had the top floor corner unit (I forget the room number, sorry). The unit was clean and the beds were fine. The kitchen was light on supplies, but you'd expect that at an all inclusive. We opted not to do the all-inclusive. We had considered doing that a couple of days, but after looking at the boring buffets, we just went to the grocery store and boughth many of the same things for 1/4 of the price. We did buy some drinks ala carte at the pool, however.

My 4 year old loved the kiddie pool with all the slides, as well as the other play area. She also enjoyed painting some ceramics. They cost about the same as the ones you can buy in town and this piece painted by her has more meaning. This is a really good resort for families, others might not like it as much. We rented a car and used it a lot, so that was good for us. In our case, cabs would have cost a lot more. We ate out a lot. Wif-fi in lobby area, not in rooms.

The beach was so-so. We did not swim or snorkel there. We walked down teh beach to the pier and took a boat over to Ixtapa island, which has really nice beaches and good snorkeling. (It was rainy season when we went there though, so visability was not good.) I enjoyed the island, but the sales people (food/drink/random stuff on the beach) were annoying. You can get a massage for $35 though, so that was nice. Not sure if I'd go back. Probably would stay in Zihuatanejo if we did.

Took the family there for the Thanksgiving week and opted for the "All Inclusive". No Bueno! Unless you enjoy nothing but buffet eats. On most nights the nice restaurants were closed. On the nights they they were open couldn't get a reservation until 10 pm. Only to walk by the restaurant and see that it was 80% empty. What's up with that? Limited staff at this time of year. Quite disappointing being as we are vacation club members at Azul. Ended up taking the 120 peso cab ride into Ixtapa and enjoying meals at Franks one night and Emillio's on another. I am now looking to liquidate my membership. If you going to Ixtapa try one of the hotels on hotel row.
