Just got back from Barcelo Ixtapa, this is my 12th all inclusive vacation so here is my honest opinion.
The Good
- great beach location, great ocean view room, great pool and swim up bar, excellent staff in
all departments. Mini bar in room was great.
The Not so Good
- food, not a great selection (but we always managed to find something) If you have a
reservation at the alacarte if it is late they don't re-stock or give you what is offered (lobster)
- drinks - again not a great selection and not good quality at all, water was most enjoyable.
- bed, hard as a rock and pillow was a weird shape to sleep on and also very uncomfortable

I would probably return to this hotel becuase for the reasonable price we paid we felt we got our moneys worth. The location, views and staff by far out weighed the negatives.

Having stayed in another Barceló I was hoping for the same kind of experience I previously had but was very disappointed. The room size was large the beds were good but it lacked maintenance. The sink had calcium deposits all over it, looked like mold in the bathroom behind the door and the safe occasionally worked. The floors seemed gritty with sand and were not swept often. The beach was great and clean, the pool area was maintained well. We stayed there for 8 days and was told we would have 3 specialty restaurants nights. When we went to make the reservations on the 1st day, they told us that only 1 restaurant was available and all other days were booked. The food ranged from fair to very good, regardless if it was the specialty restaurant or the buffet. In our group of 8, 6 of us got dysentery, not much fun. I loved Ixtapa but would probably go somewhere else to stay.

this hotel was very nice. we stayed on the 10th floor overlooking the pool and ocean. no balcony, but we opened the big windows and got a great breeze from the ocean. all night long we could hear the waves. so relaxing. the swim up bar was great. great seats at the pool every day, but you have to get there early to get good lounge chairs as people tend to put their towels on the chairs to save them. food was excellent. they have an outdoor like restaurant at the front of the hotel and at night the entertainment was there. we tend to always enjoy the Barceló's anywhere we go.

I'll start with the good - most employees not in management were great.
Bedding was great. Room service great. View super!
Pool good. Beaches great the best.
Food was OK.
I paid for an upgraded ($800 US) room on the top floor which was touted as remodeled. Bed great, shower OK, counters cracked, drapes frayed, bathroom door broken & old, lighting poor,
patio door sticky, security card has to be updated often (they give you 3 hoping 2 will work). They
will charge you a min. of $.50 for a local call & $5.00 a minute for a call to Canada (get Skype). Internet which is included with upgrade was very slow. They charged me $60.00 US for a broken
coffee carafe. If you have a complaint they don't say no - they just don't get back to you. The hotel is old possibly ready to be torn down & I think it should be. There are cracks in the beams
which made us uneasy about our stay. I would not stay in another Barceló hotel anywhere, ever
as I think the top management philosophy is to buy older hotels cheap. Keep then running with
minimum cost & charge top market.

Room Tip: Get Skype Don't break a coffee carafe. Don't pay for a upgrade.

We recently spent 7 days at this hotel - having stayed here in the past (2 separate times) we were very dissappointed. There was some booking error with our trip - I had booked 2 rooms for two couples and when we got there they had all four of us in one room, as it turned out we ended up paying for our room twice.... they even locked us out of our room so we would have to go to the front desk to reactive our key card and pay additional money. the people at the front desk were very rude to us and made our trip quiet stressfull to be honest. Beware regarding the Internet access - the fee for wi-fi was out rageous!! They charged us $25 a day (24 hour period) for wi-fi access... had I known this I would have had my cell phone carrier provide the service. Seriously, who pays $1 an hour to be on internet!! Everyday we had to call for towels and mini bar restock - for some reason this never got done unless we called? The lobby bar had the poorest service I have ever experienced (granted this is an all inclusive) but it would make more sense if they had a bar that we could walk up to and order our own drinks and help ourselves. The only good service we received was by the pool - Jose was outstanding at his job and made sure we had what we needed the entire time. The food was so, so after about 3-4 days you would just see the same thing only on a different buffet. The only two a la carte restaurants both had a dress code for men to wear pants? Really who goes to Mexico in January to wear long pants - there was no way my husband was going to do that. Planning a family trip to Mexico next year for our 25th Anniversary, but now not sure where we will stay - Barcelo is now scratched off our list.....total thumbs down.

Dates were Jan 11-22,2014. The weather was perfect but the humidity was high. The rooms were very tired and dated. The screws on the patio doors to keep the airconditioning going were falling out. The bathroom tub/ shower was dirty/moldy? Beds were comfortable though. The techno music blaring from the pool area was driving people nuts. Always a problem with reserved seating by the pool but since the resort was not full you could find a seat elsewhere. The problem was getting a reservation for the ala cart restaurants. Only open 2 days a week and even trying on the very first morning no luck unless you want to eat starting at 9:30pm. The food passable in the buffets but 6 out of 8 adults got the dreaded Montazumas revenge. No sports bar to watch the football/ tennis games in but there is an area where the 3 piece band with continue to play throughout the games. Lack of waiter service at meal times, swim up bar was where you had to go to get a drink when by the pool. The beach was beautiful, had fun snorkelling on Ixtapa Island but the zipline was not a beginner feat! This place could use Undercover Boss to see how poorly it is run.

Room Tip: Loved the beach side of the hotel but keep your drapes closed during the day unless you want an oven...

I had booked 2 rooms on the Club Premium floors - 1 king and 1 -2 queens. Got 2 rooms with 2 doubles. I asked about getting our room switched - I could have - but then I would have had to stand on my balcony to see the ocean. It definitely isn't worth paying for the upgrade at this resort. There really are no additional perks. There is no separate area at the pool for Club Premium like there is at the Barcelo Maya Deluxe.
The food is so-so - and there are only 2 a la carte restaurants. The concierge stresses that there is a dress code at these restaurants. However, if you are Mexican you don't have to abide by the long pants and shoes and no shorts or flip flops for women. While we were dining one night a Mexican family left the restaurant in board shorts, sleeveless t-shirts and beach shoes. Two nights later, the hostess was letting in teenage girls with short shorts and flip flops and lots of men with shorts. At Kyoto - the Japanese restaurant - a few nights later the hostess Cristina, was very rude to my husband who thought he would wear his linen shorts. She asked him if he did not have pants and asked him to change. Since our table was not ready, he went back to the room and put on the required long pants. Half way through dinner, she sat a Mexican family beside us and the father was wearing jean shorts. There were some other issues as well with pool chairs etc. Seems there is a double standard. Mexican vs tourist. I complained about the double standard to the hotel manager and it seemed that he cared - but did nothing for us.

The weather was fantastic and a great little spot to enjoy some much needed warmth. We went on a fishing trip from the guys on the beach - a great time. Also went off the resort for 2 dinners as the food really isn't that great. Beccofino's in the marina was excellent. Pricey but excellent.

Room on Club Premium really wasn't worth paying for the upgrade. Save your money if you stay here and use it to go for dinner elsewhere.

Maybe it is different if you go when there isn't Mexican holidays as well. I found the staff at the front desk and the security guards on the pool deck rude. The waiters in the restaurants around the pool and at the pool bar are very friendly.

Room Tip: ask for a room with an even number - you will get a view of the ocean
