“Fantastic family vacation”
Reviewed April 22, 2014

Our family of 5( children aged 4,7,8) spent spring break at this resort. This was our first visit to a Club Med resort and we were really impressed.
We stayed in a club room in the Iguana building. This block is furthest from the beach but near to the Mini kids club. It is surrounded by the beautiful gardens so always a pleasant walk to the restaurant and pool. The room consisted of 2 interconnecting rooms sharing a bathroom. The children's room had 2 full size beds and a trundle bed but perfect for our 3 children and nice to have comfy beds not camp beds. The bed in our room was huge and really comfortable. The rooms were so quiet at night and great air con so we all slept well.
The pool area was really nice and the kids pool was the perfect depth for our kids to play in safely without us having to worry or to have to be in the pool with them. You do face the usual battles for sun loungers with people reserving them at 7am. Also you will need to name your inflatables as these can get taken. However keep an eye out at the pool bar for piles of boogie boards and inflatables left behind by people. This will save you a fortune if you can avoid buying them in the costly hotel shop. Make sure you pack enough suncream as we had to buy some whilst there and it was $30 !
The restaurant was fantastic , lovely fresh food and great sea view from tables outside.
We tried the kayaking, sailing, the kids loved the trapeze and tennis.
The G.O s in the kids club were amazing. They were all really friendly. My daughter always found Eli and Wanny great fun and entertaining in the shows.
Fantastic holiday, beautiful and very safe resort. It's the first time we have ever felt relaxed with our kids. on vacation :O)

I recently spent five days with my family at club Med Ixtapa. Good experience overall, particularly for children. Service is consistent even though not the best I've had in comparable resorts in Mexico. Food is excellent, great variety mad very well prepared.

Plenty of activities in a nice quite beach. Children really stay busy all day.

Rooms are ok, just that.

Overall, good value for the price, we could go back.

We had a terrific time at Club Med Ixtapa.

The best feature of the resort is of course the kids club. It is ages ahead of everything else we have experienced in other resorts.
Our 4 and 7 year old children were enjoying the club a lot.
Good was great and service was extremely friendly and accommodative.

We have always wanted to visit this club med resort because we heard so much good reviews about this place. We stayed for a week and had a fabulous time! The kids club was the best part of this trip. We have one 6 yrs old boy and 3 yrs old girl. They had so much fun at the resort, beach, pool, night shows, kids events! The night shows were their highlight of the day. They love Snookette - Morgane and the songs. They are still singing at home after the trip. The people in kids club are so friendly and good with kids, special thank to Martin. She helped my boy to get comfortable when he first singed in to the mini-club. She was so good with my little girl as well. Thanks! We all enjoyed so much at the resort and would definitely come back again.

We spent April 4-12 at Club Med Ixtapa and we highly recommend it as a wonderful family vacation.

-Rooms: Much nicer than I remember at CM. Get the Family Club room if you have kids, and consider upgrading to include a balcony (good for drying clothes throughout the week). We loved the Iguana building, nearer to the trapeze (5010-5020 rooms). Housekeeping kept it very clean, and amenities were just fine. No longer the old CM of spartan rooms.
-Food: Amazing. Buffet restaurant had tons of choices for the entire family. Meats were very good, breads amazing, and lots of special stations for delicacies (fois gras, beef wellington, crab legs...). We ate more than half of our meals outside, looking over the ocean. Try the Miramar Restaurant (non-buffet) for even better food and a change of scenery from the buffet.
-Drinks: Bar team, including the GEs (local staff) was wonderful. Order as many drinks as you want, at the bar or on the beach, as often as you like. Small tips go a long way.
-Activities: We did trapeze, rock wall climbing, kayak, soccer (every day), beach volleyball, took tennis lessons, tie-die shirt-making...lots to do. Or lots not to do, if you preferred.
-Excursions: We chartered a boat for deep-sea fishing and our 9 year-old caught several fish, including a 12-pound black tuna! Captain Miguel was really cool. And swam with the dolphins in Ixtapa, which was better than when we did that in Cancun. But the excursions, like the boutique, are still a bit too pricey for what you get. That hasn't changed.
-Entertainment: Lots of fun stuff happening day and night, although the nightlife dies down by 11PM (family club). Shows were fun; dancing to Crazy Signs still a highlight.
-Kids Clubs: We hear other children of all ages loved the kids clubs. Ours tended to want to do stuff with us, and that's OK too. But for most families, this is the most important feature of the village.
-Beach/Pool: Both were nice options. Great single-family lounge "palapas" on the beach and by the pool. Ocean water was warmish (warmer than in LA), with great waves for body-boarding...consider bringing (or buying there) a good body-board. But don't bother bringing skateboards (our mistake), as there are no areas that work for that.
-Spa: My wife did one treatment and loved it. Was surprisingly reasonably priced.
-G.O. Team: Flavia and her G.O. team were great. Made every activity sparkle. Better than the G.O. teams I remember from the past. Our thanks to Patrick and Marifer (circus/trapeze), Logan and Pedro (Landsports), Polo (excursions), Leilani (Planning/Rooms), Chantal (reception) and the rest of the amazing team.

We highly recommend this village for families with kids of all ages (but less so for couples who don't like to be surrounded by kids, or singles who want night-life).

Feel free to email through TripAdvisor with questions.

Loved it. Want to go to Club Med-Cancun (now a family village also) next!

Been twice. great hotel, excellent service. We stayed in the Sol suites. beach and ocean amazing. food is excellent, yes buffet food go figure. The rooms need a bit of TLC here and there but we were rarely in them. Good value for money. Can't wait to go again and that is just Dad speaking, the kids would give this place a 6 out of 5.

Room Tip: not all rooms have balconies, so how do you dry your clothes? simple get a room with a balcony. For...

My first time at a club med resort, and my wife's first time back in almost 18 years. We chose the Ixtapa property because of the family friendly reputation, the reviews that this had the best food of all the properties, and because we've never been to the Pacific coast of Mexico previously. We traveled from the midwest with two other families, neither of whom had ever been to Club Med previously as well.

Overall, it was better than expected. This was my best vacation ever. I've not relaxed like this in a long time. We will be back here or to another resort for sure. The week was just fantastic.

The hardest part was getting there, which required an overnight layover in Minneapolis if you fly Delta (only Delta city with a direct route to Ixtapa in the US), which ended up limiting a day or two of potential time in the sun if there were a direct flight to Ixtapa from our city. Once we landed, the airport transfer was very smooth, and they even had water for us on the bus. The ride to the resort was about 20 min, through Zihuatenejo first and then through Ixtapa to the resort. Our bags were at the room by the time we walked over there, allowing us to unpack, and eat lunch immediately, reducing the loss of a travel day!

The facilities are not 5-star, or even 4-star. Know this in advance. The place is a bit dated and very typical of the Cancun-style Mexican resorts. But honestly this doesn't and shouldn't matter. If you do the trip right, you hardly ever are in your room, except to change and then collapse into a peaceful slumber at the end of the day. We had a 2 room suite in the Iguana building. Our shower flooded the bathroom every time we used it. A bit annoying, but it was manageable. Internet in the room with wifi was also spotty--a bit annoying considering you pay a fee for it.

The restaurant was a bit warm--don't think the AC was working, but if you can get an outside table with a view, it is just heavenly. Especially around 7-8pm, for a sunset dinner, overlooking the cove and the island. The food was very good, and plentiful. Tons of options which suited our picky children. There is authentic Mexican food at each meal, but other options (including burgers, pasta, and a full salad bar) at every sitting. The food is very fresh, and the variety for each night was good. There were food allergies in our group, but this was handled with exceptional skill and professionalism (and this review is coming from someone who is an Allergist). Call ahead, set this up with the team, but there was no worry once we got there, and few things that the allergic kids couldn't eat (desserts were not a problem). Coffee service in the AM was a bit spotty at times, but they have a machine you can go walk up to and get your own from if you are in a pinch. We did the steakhouse once--nice view, but was not a great cut of meat, and probably not worth it in the end.

There are several bars, and the drinks flow. There is a cocktail hour nightly with chips and guacamole, where you can watch the sunset and listen to live music. You can have bar service from waitstaff on the beach as well. Liquor is well-quality, but you can buy top shelf if you choose. That made no difference. If you want a big glass/cup, I recommend you bring your own mug (for alcohol or coffee). That is something we will do the next time. Try spiking one of the kids cocktails with alcohol--very tasty.

The pride of club med is the abundance of activities. You can start your day early, and go all day doing something. We exercised and played probably 6-7 hours each day. It was like summer camp for adults, and utterly relaxing. The gym is something to be desired--way too hot (like a sweat lodge) and with poor quality equipment, but that forced me to run outside on this bike path into a very safe forest park in Ixtapa I would not otherwise have discovered. Part of it goes along a beach as well. The athletic options are endless--swimming, soccer (nightly games at 5 and some staff play who are fantastic local players), trapeze (get in line early as it starts at 4 for the adults), archery, sailing/kayaking, beach volleyball (two games a day), hoops (not terribly popular but there is a full court), etc. Lots to do, well organized, and you can literally play all day until you drop from heat exhaustion. One note is that the land sports director does keep a very regimented schedule. Things start on time, and have defined ends to them. To me it makes more sense for a fitness class than for a game, but that is how it is. This definitely happened in the soccer games--good matches were halted by the director who literally takes the ball, and insisted on being equitable and playing American football one day, which no one wanted to play (so a group of 12 wanting to play soccer was turned away). A little less rigidity there would go a long way. The kids also do the circus stuff in the AM--adults can only do it between 4-6 and it gets crowded. Archery too. Some fitness classes also filled up. Just be aware and adjust to their schedule.

For just lounging, there are a few daybeds on the beach and at the pool. Most of these were reserved early on, in violation of the policy that they hand you in writing when you arrive. Obviously not enforced. So if you want a good seat, it was a bit of a scramble to get up early and find one. Probably harder to find a seat at the pool than the beach, and on the beach they have umbrellas that can be set up so shade is not an issue. There are some locals selling cheap crafts on the beach that do hound you, in full view of the security officers who let them do so. They do politely move on if you tell them too, but they continue to offer you goods each time they walk by--so you end up telling them to go away a few times a day. The club could/should crack down on this, or provide them a space within which they have to stay, and allow the guests to approach them if interested in goods, not the other way around.

One note of caution--it was ridiculously hot and the sun intense. Bring a hat, a sun shirt for the kids (or yourself), and vast stock of sunscreen. We nearly ran out. Apply liberally and often to avoid burning.

The water was wonderful. The pool is on the warmer side, but that can't be helped given how hot it was outside. Kids club was great as well. They take your kids at 9, and have them doing activities (including meals) all day until 5:30, then have them from 7-9 again for dinner and a kids show. That was just fantastic, and both of my kids had a great time. The kids club GO staff is amazing. The night shows are of poor quality for the adults. Very campy. The staff do try hard, but they are not performers. The circus shows were the best, and worth it. I'd skip the others except the kids show.

The GO staff were good. The circus staff are very popular. The rest of the staff do try to meet everyone. Most end up eating at least one meal with you, and are very extroverted. This is part of the culture of Club Med--to eat with the GO's, so know this in advance. However, if you or your group wants to eat alone, there is no pressure to have them join you. The spa was just OK. Some bars are better than others, and I concur with one of the reviews that certain bar tenders seem to resent making certain drinks for the kids. Some bars close at random times, which are not posted either.

Our friends went into town twice--we didn't. Shopping is just OK. They ate at a boutique hotel and enjoyed a great meal. There is a little island that you can take a jetty to, which also serves some food (locally cooked, right on the beach) and can get a massage for a fraction of what the club charges. That is probably worth the walk to the pier to catch the boat. Otherwise I felt completely without obligation to want to leave the resort.

In sum, great trip, but better for active people who want to do sports and similar activities during the day. There are better resorts with better accommodations for just sitting on the beach. That is not what a club med is for anyway. The kids are well taken care of, the food is good, and the location is sensational.

We are sure to be back.
