“Third time and it's still outstanding”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 10, 2013

We just returned from our third trip to Club Med Ixtapa Pacific (9 days, from December 28 through January 6th). It remains our favorite destination for a family vacation. We first went there in January 2010 when our daughter was 4, and returned in 2011 when she was 5. She is a veteran of Mini Club as a “Gekko” (4 and 5 year olds), and this year was thrilled to be an “Iguana” (6 and 7 year olds).

We have traveled a great deal, including enjoyable vacations at Club Med Punta Cana (easier to get to from where we live) and Club Med Sandpiper (traveling with extended family and the Florida location was more convenient). Ixtapa remains our favorite Club Med. For families with young children, this vacation is heavenly.

Hospitality – this is the big Club Med differentiator – Remy (chief of the village) and his team of GO’s are the most friendly, hospitable, festive, hard-working people I have ever seen in my life. Somehow, they make you believe it is not only their job to do this; but that they truly enjoy it and are invested in your happy vacation. It is a remarkable feat of management to pull this off, and we are very impressed by it.

Accomodations - we had a family suite with a balcony overlooking the ocean in the Iguana building. It was very nice- especially the oversized "spa" bathtub and the beautiful balcony overlooking trees that filled with birds (and iguanas) every morning and night. I was worried it would be loud but except for literally 5 minutes of hearing music in the 9-10 p.m. range, it was very peaceful and quiet. The room was immaculate. This is not a super-luxury resort, but extremely nice and comfortable for a family with kids. It could use slight updating but nothing major, and the space more than makes up for it.

Food – consistently for the third time, it was absolutely fantastic. We are relatively healthy and picky eaters (one vegetarian). The food is fresh, with lots of choices and variety for everyone. The fresh Mexican food is a highlight; as is the sushi or sashimi and grilled fish every night. I am a little germ phobic and generally don't like to eat at buffets – this one is extremely clean and appealing. We were also amazed when the main hostess at lunch and dinner (Selene) recognized us and immediately said “Welcome Back”. She was completely delightful and made us happy to be back.

Mini Club - our now 7 year old daughter is a veteran of Mini Club (and has also attended kid's clubs at Westin resorts and on Norwegian cruise lines.) This was her best vacation yet and she adored the whole Iguana team (especially Kari). She generally went to the club during the day and participated in activities (soccer, tennis, circus, archery, swimming, sailing etc). She would then have a little down time with us, and would then want to eat dinner and attend “the show” with her “teachers” from 7 to 9. This was great because it let us have an adult dinner. Club Med really has this down - the facilities are awesome, the staff is loving, safety-conscious and fun, and the activities are great for kids. Our daughter has a very serious nut allergy, and I never worry when she is with the Club Med mini-club team – they are incredibly conscientious and take the time to pay individual attention to the kids. I find this amazing given that they are meeting children for a week or two at a time. You would think your child is their absolute favorite of the entire year from the way they make you feel.

Resort - the place is simply gorgeous. The pool, the beach, the grounds are all spectacular. In general, we vacation to "get away". However, at Club Med it is so easy to meet nice people (especially other parents of young children) that we enjoy connecting with other families. Since Ixtapa is a relatively small resort, we hung out often with a few other families (for example, while the kids were playing in the pool etc). The Club Med approach makes this so low-pressure and so enjoyable that it is now something that we genuinely enjoy.

One more note - our family is a bit unusual - we are an inter-racial lesbian couple (African American and white) with an African American/Latina daughter. We feel completely accepted at Club Med - both by the staff and the other guests, who seem to tend to come from major metropolitan areas. For us, this is very important and is part of what would make us come back, or not, to a resort.

Our only "complaints" are minor:

Wine: I understand the need to keep costs down when you are running an all-inclusive. However this is a French company and the house wine (especially the red) is undrinkable. The premium bottles for sale are at an insane markup (10x the retail rate).I think the resort should either upgrade the house wine or sell at least a few bottles of wine with a reasonable markup. We would have purchased a bottle of wine every night if there had been any that were reasonably priced.
The gym needs to be updated - many of the machines were showing signs of corrosion from the salt air. It could also have some more equipment and clean mats to ease the crowding in the morning.

Room Tip: Iguana building is nearest the kid's club and pool and very convenient (although probably less q...

5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 10, 2013

Our extended family of 10 (ages ranged from 6 to 65 years old) met here for our annual family vacation over Christmas. We had a fantastic time and the weather was perfect.

Pros:
- Outstanding location, with a large private beach. It was full, but never crowded.
- The deluxe rooms were HUGE! Ours had an enormous king bed, and the kids each had their own twin bed. The room was divided, so we could have our privacy.
- The food completely blew us away. There was a lot of variety that pleased those in our group who wanted to explore new foods as well as those who wanted the eat the tried and true. This was much better than any food we've had at any other all-inclusive resort or cruise.
- Circus school: How great is it that a novice of any age can get on the trapeze? Our kids love this.
- The drinking water was just fine. Unlike other trips I've taken to Mexico or our family vacation to Costa Rica where all 10 of us got sick, the water here was filtered and fine.
- We were extremely safe. Club Med had plenty of pleasant security people on the property making sure those not allowed on the grounds or private beach didn't get on.
- Remy is an excellent "Chief". Very visible, attentive, and friendly.

Average:
- The "entertainment" was just average, maybe a little below average. Perhaps we've been spoiled from Disney Cruises, but the only great part of the entertainment was the trapeze show (which was great).

Cons:
- The only disappointment was very significant, and that had to do with Club Med's travel. They arranged everything for all of us, which worked out great until it was time to leave. There was confusion with 2 of our 3 families on our departure date, in that we received instructions to leave our bags outside for transport to the airport a day before our actual checkout. Then the luggage tags we received had days/dates that didn't match (eg, Saturday the 30th, even tho the 30th was a Sunday.) Those aren't big problems, though. The real issue came when Club Med dropped us off at the airport to return home. It turns out the Club Med travel agent changed our flight to an earlier one, but failed to tell us or the Club Med front desk. As a result we got to the airport after our flight had already departed. The airline couldn't change our tickets, saying the travel agent had to do it. Unfortunately, it seems like there was only 1 person at the Club Med travel agency working, so we were on hold for over 30 minutes. Long story short, it took about 2 frustrating hours to get rebooked and then had to wait another few hours for that flight. In retrospect it would have been much easier and less stressful to just book our own travel.
- You have to pay for wireless. (Although it's a great excuse to not work while on vacation.)

Tips:
- Try the trapeze on your first day, as you'll get better every day. All of our kids wished they had started early as opposed to mid-week. Don't wear sunscreen on your legs, however, as you won't be able to do some of the tricks since they don't want the sunscreen to rub off onto the gear, which would make it too slippery for others.
- We highly recommend the sail and snorkel trip with spinnaker sailing. That was one of the highlights of the trip.
- A 10 minute walk down the hill takes you to a nature preserve where you can see crocodiles (behind a fence), iguanas, and birds. It was fascinating.
- Bring plenty of insect repellent, as the bugs can come out in the evening when the sun goes down.

Overall: You will have a fantastic time if you bring your family here. There is so much to do (and eat) in the beautiful setting that I just can't imagine having a bad experience.

Room Tip: The deluxe rooms were HUGE! Ours had an enormous king bed, and the kids each had their own twin bed...

5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 9, 2013

We spent ten days here from Dec 9-20.We are a family of 3 (6 yr old dd) and spent the year before at CM Cancun at almost the exact same week. It was hard not to compare the two given they are both family CM's and we spent identical weeks at the two CM and they are both in Mexico.
My review will focus on the difference between the two resorts in case you cannot decide which one to go to. That said, we had a fantastic time at both club's and would happily go back to either one with our daughter in a heartbeat given the chance. If we were to travel as a family again I would probably have to lean towards Ixtapa. Here is why:

Rooms: Or child needs her own space. She just sleeps better not in the same room with us. The Club Rooms have a HUGE second room for children with two twin beds, and a desk. It really is a great amount of space for little people. She loved having her own space and so did we. In Cancun the children's bed is in the same room and the space was a lot more cramped. We were hardly in our rooms but the extra space and divider were great.

Pool: Both resorts have a kid pool at the mini club facility but Ixtapa has one attached to the main pool that is only 2.5 feet deep. This isn't so much an issue for us now but for young kids who don't swim it really is nice to have that available. In Cancun the main pool is not suitable for children under 4 to really "play" in... Also, the pool in Cancun was COLD in Dec. They get more wind there and the temps were a little colder and i don't think they heat it. We never went in the pool at Cancun given the temp and the ocean was Soooo warm. However, at Ixtapa it was great to be in a lounge chair and have her play in the kid pool and we could relax.

Mini club- I would say Ixtapa's mini club facilities are a little larger but the schedule and they way it is run was almost identical to Cancun's. In fact, it might have been the same schedule exactly??

Size- Ixtapa is considerably smaller. It has a more intimate feel. I saw a lot of families let their kids roam the property by themselves at a fairly young age. I think this has to do with the size and a lot of families come back to this club year after year and the kids know it well.

Food- I would say the food quality was the same as Cancun. Excellent! Really no complaints. The main buffet is smaller in Ixtapa and less choices (especially at breakfast) and the first few days we were there it was still slow and off season so it wasn't as varied. Cancun has another restaurant that is open for lunch everyday so you have more choice there in addition to the bigger buffet. Overall, I would say they were both 5*

Activities- Ixtapa has archery. Cancun doesn't. My dd really liked this so it is a point of reference. There is also a climbing wall at Ixtapa For the water sport enthusiast the sailing is better in Cancun because they get more wind. They also have a lagoon so you can wate rski, windsurf and snorkel. Ixtapa does not.

Beach- Ixtapa is on the pacific ocean while Cancun is on the Caribbean. Don't expect turquoise waters in Ixtapa. It is is still very warm (though not as warm as Cancun) and the beach is still beautiful! Just different.

Gym- Ixtapa's gym really needs an update! That is all I will say.

We didn't do any group exercise classes in Cancun but my husband did Yoga every morning with Stephani and he thought the class was great.

Travelling with kids can be hard. We have gone on vacations before and it was not a vacation just because we couldn't relax or spend any alone time together. Here, we have the best of both worlds. She went to mini club in the morning everyday but we spent a lot of time together too. This club really caters to families. It seemed like 95% of the people there (or more) had kids. I would go back here just because of the reasons I stated above. If my husband and I were travelling solo we would go back to Cancun (water sports were better) or another club.

A few of the GO's and staff that really stood out for us and made our trip all the better were:
Alber (aka "the bird") in the main restaurant. He was part of the service staff and was so nice! My daughter loved him and he took great care of us. We also had great service in that "green room" from Jose, Alberto, and Juan. Thank you!
We really enjoyed our meals with Isaac the nurse. My dd loved Tonio in archery. My husband sailed every day and Cele and Marcel took great care of him. Joe in the Circus staff was also great as well as Stephani the fitness instructor.
Lastly, the mini club go's that we connected with were Augustine, Kari, Jamie and the new one Daniel (my dd called Justin Bieber)... Thank you for all you guys do!! Without mini club our vacation would not have been what it was.
Thank you Ixtapa. We have been back 3 weeks and I am still in a post CM depression. I can't wait to go back!!!

Wow, what a great place for families! We had such a great experience. The mini club for the kids is the best and the G.O.'s are fantastic. I will try to list all of them who were so friendly and helpful: Agustin, Edgar, Alexis (both of you!), Alvaro, Hoshi, Priscila, Olga, Jaime, Leo, Tonio, Karen (aka Ana), Genesis, Stephanie the yoga instructor. Sorry for those I have missed - you were all so great!

There really is no better deal than an all-inclusive resort such as Club Med. The living quarters are a bit tired, but you don't spend much time there so it's ok. It's great to be able to get a beer or a drink at the bar and not have to be nickel and dimed each time. Sailing and kayaking anytime you want was really cool. My kids loved the kids clubs and I loved it too! I could drop them off and then go do what I wanted. The locale is spectacular - wonderful sunsets each evening. We would definitely go back.

Room Tip: Rooms are the only downside to the place. Luckily, you don't spend a lot of time there. Don...

Our family of five (two adults, one tween, two teens) spent one week here right before Christmas. It was our 8th or 9th trip to this Club Med. It is our kids' favorite vacation spot - ever. As always, we were happy with the food, our rooms, and the amazing staff. Our kids made new friends in the teen club and loved their GOs, especially Pedro and Marifer. Between the five of us we participated in archery, sailing, kayaking, a massage at the spa, the shows, rock climbing, trapeze, water aerobics and most importantly for the parents, relaxing. Leilani in reservations was wonderful to work with. We enjoy visiting with long term employees who have watched our children grow from toddlers to teens. In the restaurants, we are warmly remembered by Alberto, Orfelina, Angy, Lorenzo, Esther and many others. I have always believed that if you don't enjoy your time here, you can't enjoy it anywhere!

This was our third trip to Club Med and the first to Ixtapa and it was our best experience so far. It is a smaller property and more contained but the rooms were far better and bigger than our earlier experiences. The staff were very friendly and helpful. The Mini club for the kids was excellent and our kids 5 and 7 loved it. The kids got exposed to sailing and archery and cooking and the most amazing part was the enthusiasm and friendliness of all the G.O.s at the mini club, especially Augustin and Hoshi. They seemed to take so much of effort to make the kids happy and engaged that they were happy being there.

My husband and me got time to do more activities for the first time. They had an excellent tennis coach, Javier who managed to convince me to play for the very first time. He was so patient and encouraging and friendly that we went every morning to play on all our days there. What makes club med stand apart are the G.O.s who are very friendly and have so much of enthusiasm in what they do. The other fact is that Club Med is truly all inclusive

Club Med was a wonderful family vacation. The food and wine were ok but the facility is located on a beautiful beach. The staff was wonderful. In particular were Remy and Christian who were in charge. Stephanie was the zumba and exercise teacher. She was excellent and excelled in all, including gymnastics. The resort is a bit dated and could use some updating. All in all the resort has more positives than negatives. Christmas time is a good time of year for excellent weather and nice families to vacation.
