I played Palma Real in mid-February 2006 and had a wonderful time. The course is a bit spotty, but better than I expected. The spectacular scenery in my view more than made up for the occasional fairway blemish and muddy bunker. The golf carts were good, and the beverage cart (a pick-up truck) interesting. The alligator hazards were worth the price of the round all by themselves - I saw at least a dozen and even hit over a couple.

I would definitely play this course again, and recommend it to anyone who enjoys the game despite the fact it costs probably 2-3 times what a similar course might cost in the US. Having at least one or two caddies per foursome makes the round much more fun and interesting, especially if you let them hit a shot or two.

I was in Zihautanejo last month and I have just played my last round ever at Palma Real. Over the years I seen the Palma Real prices continuing to increase while the quality of the course has declined. Do not get me wrong, Palma Real is a nice golf course, but not for the price. The sand traps are atrocious. The sand on the beaches are better than hitting off the mudcake/grass traps of this course. The price for a round is more than the price at the Marina course. When I asked about the price difference at the front desk, I was informed that the Palma Real Golf Course is runned by the government and that the Marina course is privately owned. Then why isn't the Palma Real GC prices lower, they are being subsidized by the government and the Marina course is not? Palma Real sounds like a public course and the Marina a private course. My last compliant was the beverages served on the course. A bottle of water that is half the size that is served at the Marina course, cost double the price than the bottle served at the Marina. If you must play at Palma Real and you need to have a caddy, I would recommend Adele. He is very knowledgable about the course and speaks some English. He caddy for me for over 10 years, unfortunately I will miss him when I return mext year.

10 years ago golf in Ixtapa was the best bargain anywhere. 4 years ago the prices went up sharply. I paired up with a gal that worked in the office at the Palma and told her that if they dropped the prices a bit and the word got out, they would probably double the players in no time. The next spring when I went down the prices had actually dropped a little. Wonderful! The next year prices shot up again, now I still go down for some R&R but the clubs stay home. I enjoyed playing early every morning I was down there but they just don't understand if the prices were lower in the long run many more people would be playing.
