My husband and I went to Capella mid October for our honeymoon. We did a lot of research on the best place to go, so we definitely had high expectations. Leading up to our trip, I was checking the weather report often, and was worried by the forecast of 30-40% chance of thunderstorms every day. To ease your mind, if you are seeing the same thing, don't worry. We arrived on Monday evening and stayed till Sunday, and it only rained once in the late afternoon. The first couple of nights it rained while we slept, but otherwise, the weather was beautiful. Overcast a bit early in the week, which we learned was welcomed because as it got clearer, it also got hotter. Not to worry- there was ample umbrellas and cabanas at the pool, and Victor was always happy to help you move the umbrellas as the sun moves to be sure you stay in the shade.

Upon check in, we were made to feel special- hand massages and a nice tour of the property. Our room was on the 5th floor, Ocean View Deluxe suite. We had a central view of the infinity pool, and you never get tired of looking out into the ocean at the rocks and fishermen out there. Note that the room is split with a large patio/balcony (including a lounge bed and plunge pool), and the indoor space which as the bedroom and bathroom. Be sure to close the glass doors of the room all the way to ensure your air conditioning is running. The beds were comfortable (a bit soft for my taste, but my husband loved it). The bathroom is closed off from the room with just a slat door, and the toilet only a glass door that doesn't go to the floor (just a note in case you're shy I wanted to point that out) you still get ample privacy though. The hotel provides flip flops, robes, a straw hat for the sun, and a beach bag for use- so you really can pack light. Also, our room had bug spray for us- which I recommend using in the evening. I didn't the first night and got several bug bites just sitting on our balcony in a matter of 30 minutes.

The food was really good. Our package had breakfast included and a $150 resort credit every day. I recommend a package like that (they vary throughout the year) so you are not as focused on how much you are spending. The breakfast was AMAZING- I highly recommend the Chilequillas and Enchiladas. Yummy! Also, they have several fresh juices to choose from, we went with Watermelon. For lunch, the options were a bit limited- we only went to Las Rocas, by the pool, every day. While there weren't a lot of choices on that menu, everything we ate was good. Fresh salads with fresh seafood, burgers, tacos- I promise you'll find something you like. A nice perk laying by the pool all day is they bring you little treats (fresh lime popsicles, frozen fruit, mango sorbet, chocolate dipped frozen bananas just to name a few). For dinner- I've read reviews that say don't waste your money at A'Mares (the higher end restaurant) I completely disagree here. Aside from breakfast, my two favorite meals were from A'Mares. First, my husband splurged on a romantic private 4 course meal which was AMAZING- they put rose petals up the stairs with candles, and our table overlooked the ocean. We had a private server, Cero, who came to be our favorite, that was very attentive and also let us have our privacy. They even made a special desert for me (since the chocolate deserts on their menu all have fruit in them- and I like my chocolate pure). Our last night we ate in the A'Mares restaurant and again, the food was amazing!!! Every course got better. Oh, and the fresh bread was delicious, but I warn you to be careful not to fill up on it and save room for the great meal ahead. We ate one night at the Terrace Bar (Tapas), it was okay. One night, they did offer complementary drinks to all guests- try the cucumber margarita- mmmmm! They also serve the items from the room service menu, so at least there are options. We also ate twice at the Fish Market. Fresh fish caught by 6 PM, and on your plate by 7:30. Weather permitting, they serve you on a deck about 20 feet above the ocean, it was beautiful (and they provide bug spray at the table of you need it). The seafood was good, but I still liked A'Mares much better. Overall, as major food lovers (and not big drinkers), the food was really good.

The spa- we opted for a non-traditional massage- I don't remember what it was called, but it had these hot things they used to massage you with, and really nice oils. It was a bit pricey, but really good, and a nice change from your usual therapeutic massage (of which they do offer). Our package had a buy one get one spa service- definitely helped rationalize the splurge. Also, since there weren't many guests at the hotel at the time, instead of enjoying the spa services (sauna, hot tub, etc) in separate male/female areas, they allowed my husband and I to enjoy them together. Even offered to do our massages together as a couples massage (and didn't charge the fee).

As far as excursions, we opted for zip-lining. Something I've always wanted to do, it was a blast. We were back at the hotel before lunch, so we didn't miss a day of lounging, but still got out and had fun. I will say that there is just as much (tight) rope walking as there is zip lining, so be forewarned that your arms may be a bit sore for a few days. Still worth it :).

Overall, this place is amazing- the views can't be beat, the service was really good, the food (especially breakfast and A'Mares) was delicious, and the entire staff was kind, welcoming, and knew our names. Like another reviewer, there were not a lot of other guests there while we stayed, but in some ways, that was nice too- made it seem like you almost had the resort to yourself :).

One tip- when charging things to your room EVERYTHING already has tip included on the bill. We didn't notice the first two times (oops). Still, we added a bit extra tip on there when the service called for it.

Room Tip: All the rooms have an ocean view, so you really can't go wrong.

We stayed at Capella for three nights in mid October. The hotel was not very busy during our stay – up to 15 rooms occupancy – and they seemed to operate a reduced service. The review is based on this experience.

There are several reasons why the hotel gets such a high rating amongst hotels in Ixtapa. The setting of the hotel is beautiful and everything is beautifully decorated through the use of natural materials; it is very quiet and hence appropriate for complete relaxation or honeymooners and the staff are very attentive. There are no restrictions about the checking in and out times, which is great help especially if you are catching a late flight or arrive early. The public rooms are great, the spa very spacious and the library and lobby useful places for relaxation when the heat gets too much. The room service can not be faulted and there is a complementary service of drinks around 5 pm each day and a free service of tequila from 7.30. Breakfast is included and has wide choices and importantly is offered until 11 am.

However, we felt disappointed by several things. The hotel does not seem to be carefully maintained as some of the furniture needed some desperate care and attention. The lift that operates between the hotel and its public areas appears not to follow any health and safety regulations, when not in use. Given the limited service during our stay, our eating choices were very limited. For two out of the three nights of our stay the hotel was running a taco night, which was a good value for money but worth to experience it once. The upmarket restaurant seems to be offering more choices but we did not try it and the fish restaurant was closed. This left with the limited options of the room service.

The hotel does not operate a courtesy bus to Ixtapa or Zihuatanejo, which means that you are captive in the hotel as there are no taxis in the proximity. This would have been fine if there were more eating options available within the hotel. The major let down are the services offered by the spa. The massage for example is terribly expensive and a very poor value for money (the cost was almost two thirds of the price of the room!). I would certainly not recommend this service.

There are limited options for entertainment within the room although our room was a superior suit that included a plunge pool.

In conclusion this is a beautifully located hotel and worth its inclusion amongst the most romantic hotels list. The hotel needs however a lot of attention to detail and especially some serious facelift. It seems that it has been opened since 2006 and its age shows in most of its furnishings.

Room Tip: Check for the packages offered and opt for one that includes a suite

We stayed here in March of 2011. It was a special trip for my 50th Birthday. I cannot say enough about the room. WOW. Loved the way it opened onto the outside seating/lounge area and plunge pool. The view SPECTACULR. Also enjoyed the infinity pool and looked forward to our afternoon snack of corona's , chips , quacamole, and salso.

Wonderful!

This hotel was absolutely amazing. We were in the love with the property from the moment we got there. The views from the room (and the entire hotel) were breathtaking - very much on par with the photos that are posted on the website. The staff was super attentive and made you feel like the most important person there, but at the same time they weren't overbearing. We really couldn't ask for better service. The entire property was very quiet and tranquil, perfect for someone looking to relax and get away from it all. The rooms were beautiful and impeccably kept - they had the feel of a high end spa! It made for a very special honeymoon. The food at the 2 restaurants and drinks at the terrace bar were also excellent. A nice touch to the local fare that can be found in the area. I highly recommend this hotel. I am sold on the Capella chain, and hope to visit more of their hotels in the future.

Room Tip: All rooms have a plunge pool with beautiful views of the pacific ocean. Free Wifi is also available...

You could nitpick and find small oversights, but why try when everything else here is exceptional. The room is beautiful, with its own infinity pool overlooking a dramatic ocean view. Butterflies, birds and dragonflies float along the flower dotted cliffs. The staff is attentive and friendly but not obsequious. When the chefs learned of our interest in local mexican cuisine, they took us on a trip to the Zihuatanejo market area on their day off to sample local foods and produce. The food is outstanding, with a wide range of offerings and prices on the different menus. It is very quiet and lazy, but if you want, they offer a number of excursions. It is on the west coast of Mexico, so no hurricanes, and there is a direct flight from Houston, putting us in our infinity pool by the afternoon of our departure from Boston. Add a couple of complimentary beers and corn chips delivered to the room every late afternoon and a bottle of tequila or mezcal to sample in the library at night, and I find it hard to imagine that anywhere could do better.

Room Tip: All rooms have the same amazing cliffside view. An upgrade gets you an infinity pool. The south si...
