“Omar is a Pro!”
Reviewed October 27, 2012

I recently spent the day fishing off of Puerto Escondido with Omar and his deckhand Israel. You won't find two more experienced and friendly people on the water in the area. This is from someone who fishes 20 days a year in Mexico -- Huatulco (nearby) and La Paz (Baja). They speak perfect English and are there to help you catch fish and have a super day.
Omar picked me up at the Quinta Lili (another five star tip) at 6:15 AM and we stopped about 200 meters at an excellent restaurant for a quick delicious breakfast and to take some tortas (sandwiches) with us. He had already picked up some Pacificos for me (my request) and we were off to the beach where we departed around 6:45 (1 mile away). Everything is close by.
He picked up some block ice at the beach and we were off. About 200 yards off one of the pangas sold us (inexpensive) fresh bait where Israel started sewing them up immediately as we headed out. One thing nice about this area is you can start fishing immediately as it drops off quite fast.
The conditions were perfect and we got our first strike about an hour later--a triple sailfish group!
Omar uses circle hooks with the intention to release everything (of course not dorado or tuna). The first fish hooked up but the hook didn't set right (don't want them to swallow it completely and kill them) and was gone. The second hook up I fished for 15 or so minutes and brought in a 90 pound beautiful sailfish. Omar's gear is excellent and getting better as I write this as he told me he just ordered all new reels. Don't remember the name but if they are an upgrade they are excellent. Also, at home I have all Avet and Accurate reels (sometimes I bring them) and they were in a similar class.
About another hour or so watching dolphins planing near the bow of the boat we hooked up another sail and I fished him to the boat with another successful catch and release. Fun! Two sailfish is a good day but we were also looking for Dorado but we couldn't find the debris they like to hunt around--they are there though.
Omar and Israel are really informative and will chat with you but they won't talk your ear off. If you want to chill--they will leave you alone. They will give you what you want and they know what customer service means (one of the reasons I don't fish in Hawaii anymore--they have misplaced that idea). They hustle and they both scout for birds, debris and fins and really want you to catch fish. Their price for the day is excellent--normally $50 an hour but $40 for customers of Quinta Lili--remember no long motoring--fishing immediately. Nice fee structure if you don't want a whole day which many captain's require.
Omar brought me back after about seven hours and then drove me back to Quinta. Omar and Israel do not drink alcohol and are very responsible with safety in mind at all times (they have vests and their cell phones reach land).
If you want a great day of fishing with the best go see Omar!

“Great Adventure!”
Reviewed October 24, 2012

We heard of Omar through people we met while in Puerto. Omar and his First Mate Juan received us with big smiles for our trip. We saw sea snakes, flying stingrays, loads of dolphins and swam with a sea turtle! It was a fantastic experience. Omar speaks perfect English and they were both very professional and knowledgeable. We also caught a massive sailfish which was an amazing experience, but I was also pleased as the fish was unhurt they were happy to let it go.

“Cross that off the bucket list!”
Reviewed October 19, 2012

We had heard great things about Omar's Sportfishing from TripAdvisor before arriving in Puerto Escondido, and man, were they true. We went out fishing with two of Omar's pro-guides, Israel and Juan, and we hooked two monster sailfish in under 45 minutes of leaving the shore. Both guides provided phenomenal customer service: awesome attitudes, clear experience, and above-and-beyond attention to our needs to make sure we had a great experience. Not only was the fishing great, but the guides also helped us fillet and cook up our catch which we enjoyed on a picturesque Puerto Escondido beach. Go with Omar, you won't regret it!
