This is an amazing beach, wide, long and beautiful. It's a wonderful place to walk, and there are usually surfers and boogie board riders. The sunsets are amazing! The surf is beautiful, but can be dangerous. It changes every day. I swam there almost every day for nearly two weeks, but on our last day I got swept out in a rip tide and was rescued by the lifeguards. I'm a good swimmer, and could probably have gotten back in myself, but truly, it was amazing how swiftly - literally in seconds - I got swept well out into the ocean. Fortunately a surfer was there with a board to support me, and then the lifeguards came, first with a belt, then a waverunner. So be careful! If no one is swimming, there's probably a reason! Down the far end near at La Punta the surf is gentler, and much safer. But for walking, you can't beat this long, gorgeous strand.

Lots of beach related services in this part of town but the beach is so deep that its a really long hike for cervesas if you don't rent a palapa. Food is quite good along Zicatela but the best is along the Rinconada.

Most mornings we went out to the main surf break at Zicatela to watch the surfers and body boarders and one of the world's most famous beach breaks. The beach is long so you can walk or run it. When you get near the port people hassle you to try to sell you a sport fishing excursion.
Overall this beach is nice and fairly quiet.

My wife and I spent three months in Puerto Escondido from Dec. 2012 to Feb. 2013. We like to take early morning walks along the different beaches in the Puerto Escondido area. One of our favorite walks is along the surf beach at Zicatela. At the time of year that we were there, the surf and the pipeline that is formed is not very large. There are still many surfers out on the water having fun. The surfers and boggy boarders put on a very interesting show. The beach is easy to walk on and you can walk for over an hour without running out of beach. I suggest going for walks between 07:00 and 10:00 AM.. After ten o'clock, in my opinion it gets too hot. There are many restaurants along the north end of the beach and if you need shade and a drink they are available. I suggest that if you are going for a long walk that you bring water with you. Zicatela also has many hotels, bars, restaurants, and shops along the north end of the beach.

There are people walking or jogging along the beach all the time in the morning. People are very friendly and easy to talk too. It is easy to spot the visitors to Puerto Escondido on the beach, they are the people who, for the most part do not have good tans. A warning for Canadian visitor who like to talk about the weather, in Puerto Escondido the weather at this time of year is always the same, hot and sunny; so there is nothing to talk about. Sometimes when you go for walks on the Puerto Escondido beaches you will see whales, and dolphins close to shore. Sometimes there are a lot of dolphins. Plays Zicatela is a wonderful place to visit and enjoy. I highly recommend it, especially the early morning walks.
