We booked this self catering lodge not by choice but because it was more or less the only place with any availability at extremely short notice.
We were hoping to stay in one of the log cabins but were told that as we were bringing a pet that we had to stay in their "pets allowed" Swiss style chalet.
We were shown the chalet by the owner who was very friendly and helpful. However, our first impression was an overwhelming smell of musty damp accentuated by the the heat of the room as it had been taking some sunlight in all day.
After settling in for a few minutes we were really impressed. Spotlessly clean bed linen, plenty of crockery and cutlery, lots of cooking utensils, ample pots and pans, good microwave, decent cooker and fridge, smart TV with DVD player and modern micro hifi. The bathroom was fairly spacious and clean.
We slept very soundly on the very comfortable bed and had plenty of storage space for our clothing.
Available for use on site is a games room, we didn't use it because we went out sight-seeing every day but to my recollection it has a ping pong table, pool table and a couple of free standing gym machines, one was an exercise bike, can't remember what the other was.
There are DVDs available from the reception to borrow at no charge and a pitch and putt area for use with clubs also available to borrow.
These cabins are set in a lovely, quiet location; ideal for R&R and as a base to sight see the surrounding area. Land's End is about 90 minutes away and Falmouth, Truro, St Austell, Newquay and Plymouth are not too far away either. Even closer is Port Isaac which is where Doc Martin is filmed.
Bodmin Moor is on your doorstep and Jamaica Inn only a few miles away.
What this place is not particularly great for is a beach holiday merely because it's at least 10 miles to the nearest beach.
There are a couple of negative points though. I mentioned the musty smell earlier; I traced it to emanating from the cupboard under the sink. Even though there was no visible damp the smell was particularly strong in there and as a result we could not keep our food in that cupboard. I guess that there may be a leaky seal from the window or possibly a tiny seeping water pipe.
There is an electric fan heater in the bathroom and we tried to use it one night when the weather went cool. Within minutes there was smoke in the chalet coming from the heater so clearly a fault there. We were a little surprised that the smoke alarm didn't go off given that it went off every morning when we made our toast!
I hasten to add that the musty smell was in no way overpowering and we didn't notice it unless we went in the cupboard. Upon checking out we mentioned these few things to the owner and to giver her the benefit of the doubt she said that she wasn't aware of them and that she would investigate and rectify. These things didn't spoil our stay though.
The only other thing was that the furniture was more suitable in a conservatory as it was wooden framed with cushions laid on it. Al little disappointing given that I noticed that one of the log cabins had a comfy sofa in it. My recommendation to Ta Mill would be to replace this furniture for something more conducive to cuddling with your wife on!
These are nit-picky in the grand scheme of things because overall we had a lovely stay and would heartily recommend it.
T-Mobile users please note though, very poor or no signal in many parts of Cornwall except major towns.
