“Keep calm and carry on......”
Reviewed January 23, 2012

I recently stayed at the Black Horse Inn, for a weekend with my husband and relatives from Canada. From our arrival Jacquie and her staff were very welcoming. Unfortunately the Inn was suffering from a lack of gas - but they overcame all the problems and provided us with a first class dinner (some of which was cooked at a nearby pub - what a great lesson i n co-operation). Our rooms were extremely comfortable, with Queen size beds, great bathroom with Molton Brown toileteries. Breakfast was provided, continental style, from a hamper in the room - fresh pastries and fruit, fresh milk etc., being delivered each morning.

Loved the attitudue and helpfulness of the staff in the face of all their problems - will definitely be back

We stayed at the Black Horse for 2 nights in November, and we loved it! The room was lovely, with a wonderful roll top bath in the bathroom. All the staff were friendly and the service they provided was excellent.

The food was very tasty and cooked well, with an excellent choice.

All in all the black horse is a great find and we have booked again for February.

We stayed here for 1 night to break our drive from London to Scotland. Great location, just off the A1, and we were given a warm welcome. Our room was a little small with a tiny shower cubicle (no bath) and a view on to the road, but as we had only booked a few days before and just needed a place to rest our heads it was fine. Unfortunately dinner was less good. We were sat right underneath a speaker which was blaring pop music and had to wait 25 minutes to give our order as there was only 1 person allowed to take orders. This wouldn't have been a huge problem if it had been explained to us when we sat down, but it wasn't so we just sat there feeling ignored and hungry! When we were eventually able to order the kitchen had run out of half the main courses (it was only 8.30) and while my husband enjoyed his lamb shank my butternut squash rissotto tasted like curry - completely disgusting. Breakfast wasn't much better: tasteless melon and slow, unbothered service. This definitely isn't the worst place we have stayed but it was just a shame they couldn't get the basics right: customer service based on the customer's needs, not their own processes; and good simple hearty dishes done well, not overly complicated ones done badly.

Stayed here last night and believe the reviews!! This was the best b&b/hotel we have stayed in. Everything was excellent - food, room, staff and especially the Black Sheep Ale.
Thank you. We will be back!

A friend recommended we stay here when in the area on business. As soon as we walked through the door we knew we had found a beautiful place to stay!
We took our drinks from the bar to our room to unpack and get ready for dinner, and were both stunned when we walked into the bedroom. Absolutely beautiful- and I couldn't wait to get into my slipper bath and finish my gin and tonic!
We stayed in the Red Rum suite which is finished to a superb standard, we certainly could not fault it.
We ate dinner in the restaurant which was lovely. We shared a ham and leek pie starter and then I had lamb shank and my partner had the venison. The portions were such that we had no room for pudding. Our son is a chef and as a result we can be very critical of our food, however we could not fault our meal. We also had a very nice, well priced South African pinotage. The service was excellent, tho' I must admit the dining room was quiet.
We opted for the continental breakfst in the room as we were setting of early for work, and it workrd perfectly.
This pub is amazing value for money both from the room and the food point of view. We are already planning a return visit, this time for longer.

Room Tip: We stayed in the Red Rum suite- just lovely!

We stayed just one night at the Black Horse on a Saturday in November. We had a group of a dozen or so friends with us, all of whom loved it too.
The rooms were clean, very comfortable and had lots of very nice touches, like a flask of cold milk rather than silly little plastic pots. It's an old period building, so there were quirks like a sloping floor in our room, but all added to the charm of the place.
Restaurant food and breakfast were both excellent and the welcome and service were too.
I can't recommend this small hotel highly enough - wonderful!

We travelled from Harrogate with friends to sample this pub as they said it was the best Sunday Lunch in North Yorkshire. I think they were right. The Sunday Roast was superb. If not the best, certainly up there with the rest. Excellent beef and Yorkshire puddings - starters and puds superb also.

The pub looks like it has been refurbished failry recently and they've done a great job. There was a nice atmosphere.

My only criticism was that the service was a bit slow and the food took quite a while to arrive. However, the quality more than made up for the wait.

The real ale selection was very good too. Overall - highly recommended.
