“Lovely property, poor food”
Reviewed January 6, 2013

The tents at 4 Rivers are absolutely top class - beautifully decorated with spacious bathrooms and private deck. We also enjoyed our excursions (if they were a bit pricey) to the Tatai waterfalls and the jungle trek/kayak. Our guide Channy was super friendly and knowledgable.

Our main qualm was with the food, which was the worst we had in all Cambodia. Despite being an Eco-lodge, they insist on highly formal service with set course menus and disappointingly, a nearly entirely western menu. We found the service here largely sucked of warmth which was not the fault of the staff but I believe of the management who trained the employees to act as though they were serving high tea. The food was also very expensive ($19 at dinner, $5-9 for snacks) and due to the remoteness, there are no other options. We were disappointed to be eating cream of mushroom soup rather than say, fish amok with fresh fish from the river! Each dinner had one "Khmer-style" meal, but even these were pretty weak compared with even the $1 road side lunch we had on the way there.

We took the private taxi they arranged from Phnom Penh for $80 on the way there and the $7 bus to Sihanoukville after. The taxi was on time and fine but especially for the way out, I would recommend the bus which was cheap and very comfortable. The staff at 4 Rivers kindly arranged it for us.

Overall, a beautiful property and fascinating location, which with fresh Cambodian food, could have been excellent.

Stunning floating river location, great Eco concept and friendly staff make 4 rivers a wonderful retreat for a couple of days. Great array of little adventure trips to keep you busy, waterfall swimming, sunset cruises, trekking. Food is great too! You stay in safari style luxury tents which adds to the overall experience . Well done and keep it up!

Dear Valued Guest,

You have made our day!

My resort team and head office support team are extremely happy of your appreciation of 4Rivers Floating Lodge...

Thank you so much for your kind words.

We hope that you could visit us again, when the solar panels are already in place. We are currently building a very unique floating structure to support these solar panels. This is gonna be the first of its kind in Cambodia!

We sincerely hope to be of service to you again in the very near future...

Have a wonderful 2013!!!

From the moment you arrive you know you are somewhere very unique indeed. The rooms (tents) are very spacious, beautifully decorated with your own private terrace straight onto the river. The views are breathtaking and with only 12 tents, it is a peaceful, quiet haven.

However, it's not the food, the rooms or the location that are the highlight here, it is the staff, who not only remember your name, but are the happiest, friendliest and most helpful we have met so far. We stayed over New Year's Eve and it was wonderful for the staff to celebrate with us.

The 4-course dinner at $19 per person is good value. I have food intolerances and the chef made special meals just for me.

A trip the the Tatai waterfalls was great, our teenage children had a ball and the staff were very mindful of our safety.

We stayed for 4 nights and I'd recommend that you stay at least 3 nights to really appreciate the serenity of the place.

Dear Valued Guest,

I have shared your review with my resort team and we feel humbled by the generous words you have used to describe your stay with us at 4Rivers...

My crew had a GREAT time last new year's eve! They were still talking about how warm the guests were that night, warmly allowing the crew to celebrate the new year with them!

We are very happy to host your family, and my tour guides (and Recreation Manager) are hoping to welcome you again and take your family to the new trekking sites that we have just explored...

Have a great 2013!!!

What an amazing place, peaceful, lovely spacious rooms (tents) with views that have to be seen to be believed. Very helpful staff and an amazing location. The only criticism would be the food. My fiancée is a vegetarian and found it hard to eat here as it is a set menu, I would also say the food was a little expensive. However, a trip along the river to see the fireflies soon made us forget. Truly magical!

The biggest pool I've ever had in front of the room (it is a floating tent). Make the daytrip to the Tatai Waterfall, naturally watermassage included. But don't forget the sunprotection ... All in all: Very private, quiet and in the mid of nowhere.

Room Tip: No tip needed, there are only twelve tents ;-))

As other reviewers have said, the setting is beautiful and a welcome respite from the urban rush. The tents were lovely, beds comfortable, and the staff couldn't have been nicer and more helpful. We loved kayaking around, seeing the fireflies and generally lazing around reading and drinking pretty good cocktails (given the location!)

However, we found problems that will only get worse over time. Things were beginning to break - veneer floor buckling, one tent's structure and sunk into the water on one side and they ran out of water on our second day, making the water in all the rooms run a very hideous dark brown until it was refilled the following morning. And no hot water. Also, a walk on the island close by showed people living in less than ideal conditions. They need to engage/employ the locals if they want them to live in a way that will allow people to continue swimming in the river.

A lovely idea that has great ingredients - setting and staff, but needs some urgent design/management intervention if it is to live up to it's desired luxury designation. I would still recommend it, but don't expect great food or high end facilities, go for the location and peace. Take your own booze and cocktail hour snacks if you want a break from basic fried western food.

Room Tip: North side gets setting sun, but all are lovely.

Dear Sir,

My resort manager and myself appreciate you taking the time to speak with us before you left the hotel about what you were going to write on trip advisor.

We were already glad to receive your feedback which you wrote on our guest survey form.

Thank you very much for remarking about the beautiful setting. Our most recent guest even mentioned that he has just stepped in 5 minutes ago, and he felt he already rested for 5 days...

Our location, with the extreme weather conditions, plus the fact that the water below us is salty water now, and was fresh water for 6 months from May til December (when it was the rainy season), has really challenged our maintenance and engineering team. And in the last 3 years since we opened, we have been continuously striving to improve the floating structure and the tented villas.

We are committed to keep the place special, having the tents, furniture and the rest of the resort, looking brand new. This is the reason why every June, for two weeks, we dedicate our resources (and we close the whole resort) for the yearly maintenance.

Several areas on the flooring part which has suffered the stress from the windy months during the rainy season, have been carefully replaced (without causing noise) that could inconvenience our guests, during this high season (in Cambodia).

I have been working, since 2 months, with my F&B manager, and our local kitchen crew from the village, on the additional dishes (which are not fried) to be added to our ala carte menu (snacks menu).

With my dedicated resort manager and the rest of my hard working Cambodian crew, I can assure you of service and facilities improvements this month and the next.

I sure hope that we could have the chance to welcome you, or your friends to enjoy the beautiful setting, and the improved service and facilities here at 4Rivers Floating Lodge.

Once again, thank you for helping us improve our services, with your genuine review on trip advisor.

Have a great new year!!!
