Went there during our Xmas\NY break. Locals advised us it was a secret beach that not many people know about ? Its about 20-30 mins from Port Macquarie. We where looking for an enclosed beach or limited choppy\surf conditions.

When we arrived (11am), all car parks where full (about 40 cars).

There is a public toilet for both M/F and grass areas to have a picnic or lie down before the beach.

The beach is a 2-3 min walk from the car park, all shady areas whee taken (not many under trees anyway) .

NOTE - It is an un-patrolled beach . It is somewhat protected from the ocean - but there is still a large opening to the ocean.

It was mostly smell waves (i wouldn't say still like a bay\river\lake). Still beachy, white fine sand. There where jet skiers on the far side of the beach and its a nice walk up\down beach.

We where hesitant to swim anywhere deeper than above waist height , as it is un-patrolled and there is still access to the ocean and slight rips further into the water.

Definitely not a local secret anymore, i think everyone knows about it. ;)

Nice beach, relaxing , water was cold though (every beach around Port Mac was cold this time - due to swirling cold ocean currents this year?)

if the water was warmer, and it was patrolled - i would highly recommend it !

As much as I am a surfer Pilot Beach is my swimming beach and I love it. It has shade trees if you cannot handle the sun for too long and it always safe for swimming. Beautiful sand that squeaks when you walk through it. Lots of birds in the trees around and sometimes the occasional snake, but they don't want anything to do with us.
I love Pilot Beach and know the other locals who swim here.

Definitely a well used free camping spot for RV's but i can see why when there are toilets and a shower. The beach is wide, sandy and inside the entrance of the inlet so only a small wave gets through making it a safe option for families. It is a short walk to the surf beach and rock ledge if you want something else to explore.

What a lovely private little inlet for kids to play in the sand and swim in the shallows. We were delighted to have a pair of dolphins visit closely on both days we were there. There’s also a rock wall to walk along. Toilets are in the car park.
