“One of the best places to eat in Hampshire”
Reviewed November 26, 2013

Having been disappointed by many local pubs and restaurants I decided to try the Wyvern a couple of months ago. So far I have only been for lunch, and despite some of the other reviews here, it has been very quiet with no kids in sight or sound.

The pub itself is very comfortable, the tables are well spaced and there is a lovely sofa area in front of an open fire. Some of the tables have views across Daedalus airfield.

I have now been to the Wyvern four times and on each occasion I have been impressed with the food and service. I am, by nature, fussy about what I eat, but the food here is really very good.

The service has also been exemplary, attentive but not intrusive – but above all friendly.

One final comment – it’s also very good value. A lunch for two will be around £20.

I look forward to many more visits.

“Great Pub food”
Reviewed November 17, 2013

This is a popular family restaurant whichwas packed and therefore, with children present, very noisy. The service was good and the menu extensive. The quality of the food varied. The pastry on the duck pancakes was very hard as was the crust of the lamb pie. To be fair, when this was mentioned to the waitress, she immediately removed the item from the final bill. Overall, this pub offers a lot that is good - the chef needs to practice his pastry management.

Thanks for the honest but kind words.
Chef has been practising his pastry (and we've got the oven fixed too but no excuses ever given here!) Hope to see you back for a 5 out of 5..... There are slightly quieter days of the week to visit if you like (less kids!)

“Excellent food and very good value”
Reviewed November 10, 2013

We booked a table for 4 on a Friday night and were delighted to discover that there was a fabulous offer which included 2 main courses and a bottle of wine for £25. The food was very good; ample portions and lovely flavours. I recommend the Wyvern to anyone seeking a casual meal out with friends. The only issue I have is that this is a pub with a dining section and the pub side can be noisy. There is no real area to have a drink before you sit down at your table but that should not detract from what was a very enjoyable evening.

“Posh nosh showed elements of excellence but was let down in places.”
Reviewed October 28, 2013

We've eaten here before and were intrigued to see what the Posh Nosh experience had to offer. I totally support what they are doing - good food is in short supply around Gosport so I welcome those trying to to up the game.

My starter was shredded duck with cucumber and a fig sauce. There was mention of Melba toast, I only got to see some flaccid bread that had just about been toasted.

For main course I elected to pay a £7.50 surcharge of the lamb. 3 small lamb chops which were simply stunning. Taste, texture and preparation could not be faulted. The solid lump of potato and Luke warm tomato with bits of goats cheese inside were a real let down. The tomato was totally out of place the potato boring.

For desert I chose the Eccles cake. Massively over cooked to the point where the inside had turned to toffee which stuck to your teeth. The couple of mouthfuls I took were an Olympic chewing challenge.

Cappuccino coffee was a nice touch, the home made fudge was too soft. Probably not quite taken to temperature although I do appreciate when it come to fudge different people like different things but it shouldn't squidge up between your fingers when you go to pick it up.

My dining partners had the beef as a main course which if anything was more deserving of the supplement. Again, take the meat away and nothing on the plate blew you away.

I didn't get to speak to the chef, he was doing the rounds but we left before he got to our table.

This review is quite harsh and I apologise for that. Take the supplement away and it wasn't an expensive meal (I don't normally discuss price because everyone's threshold is different). But other than the lamb chops themselves there was little that wowed me or served to act as a display of culinary expertise.

Other than the Eccles cake it wasn't bad it just wasn't superb. The tomato was odd and out of place. Green beans and a more exotic potato would have made more sense. The perfect mash would have been preferable to the potato paperweight.

Don't let my words put you off giving this place a go. I've given it 4/5 so as not to penalise too much. I will return, the area isn't well enough blessed with alternatives !

As a final thought I note the first couple of entries on here are tea shops, hardly in the same league as someone trying to turn out a 3 course dinner so in reality the Wyvern is number 1 in the list of dining restaurants.

Pleased to hear you tried and enjoyed your first Posh Nosh Night. And really chuffed that you descibe us as "a great local pub". We are beginning to achieve what we set out to do here at The Wyvern...... Be part of the local community, but be just a little bit special on the food side of things. A BIG thank you.
