This is really like a "home" on Lofoten. I stayed three nights and it has been a pleasant time because of the friendly atmosphere and the uncomplicated assistance of Lilian. The view to the mountains has been extraordinary and the surrounding area is more than words can say or photos can show.

We visited Reine on the Lofoten Islands in June. Reine is a lovely place not far from the Moskenes ferry port. Dramatic scenery. Reine is a fishery port against the backdrop of steep high mountains. Det Gamle hotellet is run by Lilian who is very friendly and helpful and makes you feel at home. The rooms are on the second and third (attic) floor which can be reached through Lilian's kitchen and living room (take off your shoes) and some steep stairs. The wooden characterful house has a cozy feel, but the thin walls do not keep much of your neighbour's conversations private. There is only one bath room (with shower, toilet and bath tub) for a maximum of 10 guests. So one should plan well ahead in the morning if Lilian has a full house! The shower stall is brand new (it was installed while we were staying there) and very good. The rooms are of average size and the beds are okay. The curtains, however, are no use at all. They are white and made of thin cotton. We stayed there during midsummer and curtains did nothing at all for making the room any darker. So if you have problems sleeping in broad day light (the sun shines right into your room during most of the night) you should hang up some blankets or towels in front of the window.
Lilian does not serve breakfast or drinks. Breakfast can be had at the neighbouring restaurant. Lilian's guests get a discount. The restaurant, however, does not open until 9am!! Food is excellent. There is a common room on the second floor with lots of books, games and coffee and tea making facilities. Views from the room are priceless! Be prepared for a fishy smell when you open the windows as there are countless drying racks outside the hotel for drying cod. The last of the cod is taken off the racks mid June.

We stayer recently in this guesthouse and the experience has been fantastic! Lilian was so kind to come and pick us up in Moskenes. We found a beautiful wooden house with a beautiful scenery through the window. In the guesthouse there was 3 room but that night only 2 were occupied. Our room has an awesome smell of clean. I felt like if I were @ home. In the commun living room she offered us a box with cookies and a boiler for tea (many types of tea) and a shelf with several books and guide. The bathroom was so nice and warm with many coloured towels. I hope to come back soon..why not,in winter in order to see Northern Lights ;) thank you for this beautiful experience!
Ps I can say that it's a great price compared to all the services offered!

I stayed in Det Gamle in last summer. The house is comfortable and convenient, it is very close to the bus station, just the opposite side. The house host is very nice, I arrived three hours latter that I promised, the host is still waiting my arrival until 11pm. The house is also close to a hill with great view. If one have sufficient time, I strongly recommend go to that hill for a walk. However, all the guests are sharing one bathroom in the house, you need to get up early in the morning, or you have to wait for a long long time.

Room tip: book in advance during summer times

I recently stayed at Guesthouse Det gamle Hotellet in Reine, Lofoten. Lillian maintains a warm and inviting guesthouse which she operates out of her own comfortable home. The house is arranged so that the guests have their own lounge area and bathroom, right near the 2nd floor bedrooms. The views over the bay from the bedrooms are magnificent. Everywhere you might want to go in Reine is within walking distance. Lillian's guest house is clean and tidy and very well kept. I as well as my entire group felt totally at home. Lillian is the perfect hostess. And yes, wifi is available.

Lofoten is beautiful in winter. My photos of the winter in Lofoten are soon to be posted here: www.stephennaor.com

Room tip: All the rooms are good so no need to worry about which is better than the others.
