NH Puebla Centro Historico
Ranked #11 of 100 Hotels in Puebla
Reviewed May 22, 2012

We stayed at the NH for a May long weekend.

We drove in from Mexico city and found it hard to find, but really I attribute this more to me counting on google maps than the instructions given by hotel. we were no in the best of moods by the time we found it but the staff was helpful and accommodating. I needed a smoking room for my husband which is increasingly hard to find but it worked out in the end.
What can I tell you that will help you form an opinion:

The good: very close to main plaza (one longer block), a very accommodating staff , you can park your own car and they offer an excellent breakfast and coffee. We only ate breakfast at the hotel but the buffet was just the right amount of food. The waiters were very attentive and after I asked for a hotter cup of coffee I was sure to get one every single time. Good fast and free Internet access and air conditioning was quiet. The rooms were quiet as long as you keep window closed as our room (423) looked onto the street. Not much of a view there, but I understand there are rooms with a view of a nearby church.

The bad: the pool pictures shown on the internet must have been taken by an expert because it wasn't at all what we saw. In fact water looked grey and very uninviting, perhaps because of ash from volcano? Don't know. Area for sunning extremely small - guess what you would expect from a rooftop area. We did not return after initial look about.

Very unattractive green carpet in hallways leads to rooms that are small in my opinion (and I asked and paid for a superior standard room) and yet the bathroom was huge with nothing in it. You need to play with shower head to keep water from jetting all over the floor and the same with goes for the sink. Amenities appear to be kept to an absolute minimum - I had to ask for a shower cap and extra towels and soap, but in the hotel's defense, all was brought with a a smile.I am not used to having to pay for coffee in room and I thought 40 pesos was high for the use of a coffee maker, and these particular ones were quite old coffee makers are old. On top of this, they keep them in the bathroom under the sink, an open area which I found un appealing. The floors were hardwood which was good, and lighting was good as was internet access. My husband found the room fine, adequate, and the bed was comfortable. He actually liked the large bathroom so perhaps a question of taste. I didn't like the fact that the televisions were not flat screen but then again, you aren't in Puebla to watch television!

The ugly: architects may differ for years over the outside of this building but given that Puebla is a world heritage site I found it odd- its modernistic blue color contrasting with the other beautiful three corners in the area.

In all, perhaps you want to give it a try. Nothing horrible, nothing great (except the service) just a very basic hotel: very good value for the price.

Room Tip: Not much to choose from but would imagine the higher floors better?

Would recommend for business travelers. The pillows and the mattresses could use improvement. Design of hotel is sleek and staff is very attentive. Excellent location close to the zocalo.

It is a very basic hotel, it is near the downtown. I found the room to have just want I needed. The bed was nice, I did not care for the bathroom.

The NH chain stands for Not Happy. I thought I would stay here for business to give the NH another chance. The rooms have a certain coldness to them that makes them hard to get a good nights sleep. The shower in this place was only for four foot high people. The breakfast was OK and unlike the property in Monterrey the Front desk staff was available albeit completely unhelpful for anything but processing a credit card.
Avoid this chain at all costs.

Modern international hotel within a very short walk to the Historic center and Cathedral square. Don't let the other reviewers comments of the building exterior throw you off, they are right of course & the architect should be sanctioned for putting a questionably "modern" looking design so close to the beautiful historic center. The hotel's location is within easy walking distance to many markets and shopping areasa with local artisan crafts, and churches. Did anyone mention there are alot of churches in Puebla ?

Will agree with other reviewers, that the hotel is housed in what may be the ugliest building in Puebla, but that doesn't negate the fact that it is a well run chain hotel. Good service. Helpful employees, though did not encounter any who spoke English, if that matters to you. Entire property, including room, were spotless. Typical "hard" Mexican beds, & while the imitation wood floors are far more welcome & cleaner than the dirty carpeting found in many properties, it does generate much more noise. So go for the top floor. Other reviewers mentioned thin walls & ability to hear neighboring guests, & I would agree. Both nights of our stay we were awakened by guests returning to their rooms until 3:00AM, & you can easily hear the TV from the rooms next door. Overall a good stay however, & would consider it again, Rates are higher than many other smaller hotels around the main Plaza, & there are lots of good options in downtown Puebla.

Room Tip: Top floor rooms to negate floor noise from rooms above you.
