“Decent but not outstanding”
Reviewed March 2, 2013

Came here on a Friday afternoon on our first day in Puebla.

I had a filet in garlic sauce, and my friend a steak. The food was decently tasty but the two dishes arrived about ten minutes apart, and my friend's steak was not hot as if it had been waiting several minutes. Lackluster execution, although the view was nice at our outdoor table as we enjoyed a couple of beers after our meal was complete.

“"Average" but worth a try!”
Reviewed December 31, 2012

Solo Veracruz is part of a Veracruz-based chain of seafood restaurants (marisquerias) in Mexico. The Puebla outlet is located on the south side of the zocalo in the midst of several other restaurants. Our group enjoyed several dishes, most of them quite good; it's an "average" rating mostly because the service was so poor. Both the Mexican-style shrimp cocktail and seafood cocktail (which includes other things than shrimp) were generous appetizer-sized portions in the small size. The Mexicans in our group thought the dressing needed ketchup and/or hot sauce. Shrimp with chipotle sauce was wonderful, and the "small" whole red snapper was both well prepared and filling. The seafood-stuffed mero was less successful, mostly because there was so much more stuffing than mero (the "stuffing" actually covered the white fish and the plate) and the whole thing was covered with a thick layer of way too much melted cheese. The melted cheese was not in the menu description, and it seems to be a feature of many dishes there, so ask if you have this concern. As for the service, well you might have thought it was everybody's first day. The notion of serving warm tortillas with the meal was foreign to this restaurant and a request for same took a long time to fulfill. The dishes came out separately so that some people were finished eating before others got their plates. In fairness, this seems to be common among poblano restaurants, so specify that you want all entrees (platos principales) served at the same time. The restaurant has both indoor and outdoor seating. Outdoors you have the chance for some people watching, but you also have to put up with the traffic noise. Inside you have a bit of "atmosphere" marred by music so loud you and your tablemates will be unable to have a conversation. I definitely recommend the outside seating as less problematic.
