“Great location and service”
Reviewed December 9, 2008

We had a wonderful time at Meson de Capuchinas. Five friends traveling together, we had three rooms. The location is excellent. Everything was very smooth, the rooms lovely, service was attentive, the food excellent, breakfasts great and the employees very honest (money was left in my car and returned to me). We hope to be back soon!

While staying at the hotel construction work began on the street, creating a lot of dust and mess, and making it difficult to access by car. Two of the nights we stayed there was a barking dog through the night which made sleeping a challenge. Turns out people who live next door chain their pooch up on the roof at night and are somehow impervious to the noise. That being said, Puebla was a great destination, and Meson de Capuchinas was an absolute gem. The room was reasonably comfortable and in the best part of town, just off the main square. The food at the hotel was fantastic. As foodies, and especially lovers of (real) Mexican cuisine, my fiancee and I found ourselves coming back to the hotel far more than we ever would have predicted for meals. But the real treasure at Meson de Capuchinas was the staff. Having traveled extensively through Europe, Asia, North and South America, I think I can say that no hotel staff has ever been so engaging, so helpful, so friendly, so truly happy to accommodate our needs and wants as that of Meson de Cap. We became friends with our tour guide, the front desk clerk, the chef, the waiter, and the bartender/porter, each of whom added some special and personal touch to our visit. We will likely return to Puebla, as much for the Hotel as for the slow, intoxicating rhythm of the oldest Spanish Colonial city in North America.

Our second stay at a Mexican Boutique Hotel was well beyond satisfactory. The Meson is a centuries old converted convent with atmosphere to burn and an unbeatable location. The Zocalo, heart of the historic district, is three blocks away and the Museo Amparo, the city’s best, is at the end of the block. Everything from the antiques district and flea market to the Cathedral and incomparable Rosary Chapel are within easy walking distance along with plenty of good restaurants, shops, cybercafés, etc.

The few snafus we encountered (safes that wouldn’t open and challenging room keys) were quickly remedied by an attentive, friendly staff. They happily met our every request, securing a driver for a day trip to Cholula, printing boarding passes, sandwiches for the flight home, etc. The young owner, Tony, thanked me for my complaints and constructive criticism and assured me someone would be disciplined for not picking us up at the airport as promised.

Our suite was spacious and comfortable, appropriately furnished with period antiques and reproductions, all for sale. Noise was never an issue even with two huge shuttered windows opening to the enclosed central courtyard. The hotel restaurant offers an excellent menu, including a killer mole sauce that may be the best in the town that invented it. (We didn’t have time for the hotel cooking classes but other guests raved about how much fun they were.) Our only criticism is $9 for a glass of mediocre wine when most other restaurants charge $6.50 for a better vintage. Two other hotels next door, notably El Sueno, offer good alternate dining, and El Conjuro a block away is one of the best restaurants in Puebla with superb tapas and other Spanish fare and desserts to write home about.

If you’re tired of cookie cutter hotel chains and want an abundance of color, history and a terrific staff, Meson Capuchinas is a wise choice. The hot water may take a few extra minutes, but with such charming ambience it’s worth the wait and more than worth the reasonable rates.

  • Liked — Charming historic architecture and excellent staff
  • Disliked — The usual snafus associated with old buildings, although all were quickly fixed.

We stayed at the Meson De Capuchinas for 4 nights for our wedding anniversary. There are so many wonderful things to say about this hotel. We have traveled a lot in Mexico & other countries and enjoy staying in the small boutique hotels. This is one of the finest. The staff is very helpful, friendly & attentive. The host- Angel was such a tremendous help. He suggested places to go, places to eat, shop, etc. The last night Angel & his staff put a trail of rose petals, with candles, and a large heart shape in the rose petals in our room. We came back to our room after dinner to this wonderful surprise.

All the rooms are beautifully decorated. We stayed in room 5 which is upstairs in the front. We loved this room. One night we went over to the sister hotel for dinner, which I guess now is totally separate.
Both are stunning properties but we were very happy with our choice of Meson de Capuchinas which has a more sophisticated look & comfortable feel to it. We loved our stay here & we loved Puebla.

We stayed here for one Friday night in August. Having had great difficulty booking - they responded to emails very late , if at all- we arrived at about 7.30pm in torrential rain. Their first request was for a credit card impression , which annoyed me, as this is a small boutique hotel where we had pre-paid the rooms. None of our other Mexican hotels did this. The 2 rooms we were given were beautiful and good value. We had no problem with noise, as has been commented on here, because the hotel appeared deserted. There seemed to be one person in reception as the total staff, and the welcome was not warm. The first thing I did was to partially flood our room by taking a shower and so had to ask him to clear up the water - I was told that the shower had not drained because there was a clear plastic cover - invisible to my eye- over the drain! Not a good start.
It was raining so hard we did not want to go out so I asked for drinks and dinner -despite their reputation for excellent food, this seemed to cause some surprise, even consternation. They wanted 100 pesos for a single glass of red wine , which is a lot in Mexico - from a bottle perhaps open for some time. We bought a better value bottle and had to carry the rest of the bottle with us. Dinner took a very long time to arrive ( an hour) by which time my daughter was falling asleep and we were all exhausted. The food was good but my pork had a bone that was clearly from a chicken in it and the sauce was missing many of its ingredients. Service was distant and somehow corporate throughout which was odd in this size of place. The building is very beautiful but I don't think I would visit here again.

  • Liked — the decor in the rooms
  • Disliked — the lack of welcome and the slow service

We took a one week long cooking course with Chef Alonso and his assistant Elisa. The course is very well organized, can be taken by even the newest cook and concentrates on recipes that can readily be used in the home. Chef Alonso is unflappable and good humored. He speaks excellent English but prefers to be precise in his instructions, speaking in Spanish and have Elisa translate. We really enjoyed the whole process.

The hotels are excellent (we stayed at Capuchinas).. some may find it noisy but you need to give a little to gain a lot. Take the time to check out the web photographs of the rooms and ask the hotel to email their descriptions of each of the rooms.

There is much to do in and around Puebla.

We went down for the cooking classes and stayed at Capuchinas. We went for dinner one night at Compania and found it to be less desirable than Capuchinas. The cooking classes were FUN, the city tour which was included in the package wonderful. We found Capuchinas to be more sophisticated than its sister, Campania and, although given the opportunity to move, opted to stay at Capuchinas. The staff is very professional and friendly and very helpful. We understand they are planning on opening another hotel with 14 rooms next year and on doing another type of cooking class which will cover more complex dishes. We plan to go back for those classes. We highly recommend Capuchinas.
