“Wonderful hotel in the middle of it all!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 16, 2010

The Hotel Colonial is a beautiful hotel with very comfortable rooms, and it's just a block away from the Zócalo (city center). We got a nice quiet room facing a small side street. Breakfast is excellent.

To echo what many others have stated, this is a charming, beautiful hotel only a block from the zocalo. There's a 24/7 Oxxo convenience store on the next block, and plenty of restaurants, ATM's and other conveniences you'd expect in the center of town. The restaurant was a lot better than I expected for a hotel restaurant. Their mole poblano was good, and they have several types of aguas frutas (fruit water/juice) including watermelon, cantaloupe and pineapple. I didn't have breakfast.

The WiFi from my room on the second floor, facing the street, was very reliable and high speed. It took about 30-45 minutes to download 700MB files. The bathrooms are large enough and the water was plenty hot with good water pressure. Free bottled water is provided. My room was large and had beautifully unrestored painted ceilings.

The staff is very friendly, though when I was there during the week of Christmas they were pretty busy.

Be careful going up the stairs, because the walkway is between the kitchen and restaurant, and some of the waiters didn't seem to care much for looking out for guests as they zoomed past.

There were a room full of kids on my floor, screaming and yelling for a couple of nights and no one did anything about it, but then again I never complained.

Taxis stop frequently on the side of the street farthest from the hotel. You can flag one down very easily if one's not already there.

All in all, this is a great value and a very nice hotel to frequent. If I ever go to Puebla again, I'll definitely stay here.

Definitely go see the pyramid and church at Cholula. The tunnels were closed when I went (December 2009), but for a 70 peso cab ride and a 9 peso collectivo bus back to the center of town, it's a fun visit for next to nothing.

We still don't know why this little gem of a hotel does not appear in the guide books! Everything about it was perfect............location,(one block from the zocalo) staff,(totally accommdating) rooms, (large...we were in 111) and hotel ambiance. (a converted monestery). We did eat in their dining room one evening and it was delightful!

We caught the bus from Mexico City to Puebla, 2 hrs, and then a taxi to the hotel - the taxi has to stop at the end of the road as the entrance is in closed cobbled square.

Wonderful old colonnial hotel at a great price. Great location just a short walk to the square and Puebla is worth a visit very pretty. We sat in the square watching the world go by.

Room large, clean and helpful staff. We were on the ground floor and would absolutely recommend this hotel.

The Hotel is quite nice. We had asked for a quiet room. At first we were put in a grand room, but realized the traffic below would be a problem. We asked to see another and were shown 2 - one of which was very bottom while the other was nice. The problem was the room/hotel is so quiet - no sound. We spent the following day looking for a fan to put in our room to make noise. We finally found one at - you'll never guess - Walmart. Once we found the fan, everything was great. I must admit this noise thing may just be something my husband and I have a problem with.
Really the hotel was lovely. If noise does not bother you, you could ask for the second floor northwest corner. That was a Grand room !!!
Try Aveno w/leche at the Restaurant for breakfast. Oatmeal with milk. My husband and I ended up sharing this each morning. It was perfect !!
Somewhere in Mexico someone stole some expensive medicine from my suitcase. This is only 1 place out of 4 that we stayed. I can't even imagine someone taking medicine.

My husband and parents and I stayed at this hotel for 2 nights in September, 2009. We had a great stay! All the staff were so helpful and friendly. I rang and asked to borrow a hairdryer and someone was at our room in about 3 minutes. We enjoyed a nice and reasonably priced breakfast at the hotel, it is beautiful there. We enjoyed playing cards at night time from the balconies, and below in the restaurant they had live music which added to the atmosphere. The rooms were clean, spacious and quiet. Had a great sleep. The bath tub was nice and deep and the water pressure was great. Can't say enough good things about this place! It's also within walking distance of the zocalo, great location.
