“Colonial Ambience”
Reviewed January 24, 2013

We liked
- the colonial styled corresponding to the name of the hotel is being very well maintained and polished creating, together with the service, hotel-specific ambience
- central location
- very good level of service
- price / quality ratio that is more than fair
- special parking place in a covered courtyard (good point if you are travelling by car)

We did not like
- trying hard but can not find anything to complain about

We advise
- pay attention to the hotel elevator considered to be one of the oldest functioning elevators in Mexico
- try Mole Poblano (chicken in a multi-ingredient (from different types of pepper to chocolate) sauce) since the hotel is considered to be one of the best local places to try this typical Mexican dish of the sate of Puebla

This customer called first saying that the hotel was great but he had lost some jewelry during his visit to Puebla and perhaps he forgot it in the room. We searched the room and nothing was found. Next he sent a message saying that he was now sure that the jewelry had been stolen by someone in the hotel. We responded that such statement was unfounded. Now he is accusing us of being uncooperative. What else could we do? When anything is lost the responsibility falls in the person who lost it. To blame someone else is not fair.

For the safety of our guests, all our rooms have electronic entrance keys and safe boxes.

The Colonial is something special, because of it history, but also because of where it is located in Puebla. It is absolutely perfect for the tourist and a great place to be in town. It is not flashy and some of the fittings are run down, the wifi is slow, but all of that is irrelevant in the face of everything else. It is a great place to stay!

Many hotels in this price range can be a crapshoot, but the Colonial was above average for this price. The location was perfect, plus they have attached parking which is huge if you're driving as we were. We actually had 2 different rooms for our trip to and from Oaxaca. The first was above the kitchen, and there was some noise from the exhaust fan. However, the on the way back we had a larger room facing the andador under repair; jackhammers and all. The window had double-pane glass and it was quiet enough to take a nap in the afternoon despite the racket outside. I've paid more for many hotels in Mexico and gotten less. I wouldn't hesitate to stay there again.

There is a lot of charm in this old hotel...fortunately we got as we were told, one of the best rooms...two balconies in a corner room overlooking the pedestrian street outside...if this was one of the best rooms I cannot imagine what the others are like...this place needs new mattresses...updating bathrooms...the place is tired...and needs work...

The hotel is quite centrally located not far from the Zocalo, so a very good location. The room we had was spacious with a small balcony overlooking the street. It was also close to the central courtyard and glass roof over the restaurant so it was quite noisy. There was no buffet breakfast and the service was variable - with grumpy waiters. The staff at reception however were friendly. Overall a good choice for sightseeing in Puebla.

The Hotel Colonial is a couple of blocks from the zocalo, or main plaza, and is convenient for visits throughout the Centro Historico. My bed was on the "firm" side, but others in our tour group preferred such beds. I was on an interior room with no natural lighting, but it was quiet. People on the street side discovered that Mexico can be a very loud country at night. Room furnishings were okay; I would have liked a desk or other writing surface, though. The staff was wonderful and the breakfasts were okay. We went to surrounding restaurants for other meals. Hotel Colonial is a good choice for a higher end "economy" hotel.
