“Beautiful hotel, excellent location”
Reviewed August 23, 2012

My mother and I stayed in Hotel Colonial for one night recently on the way to another city in the state of Puebla. As many others have said, the location of this hotel is superb. It's less than a block from the Zócalo and close to many restaurants, churches, etc. Be sure also to visit the roof! There are stunning views in all directions.

As for the hotel itself, it was also great in many ways. The room was very clean and the view from the balcony beautiful. The hotel exuded the same colonial feel one experiences throughout Puebla. There are so many beautiful and interesting things to take in--the balcony on the hallway, beautiful tiles on the stairs and walls, old ceilings restored, and so much more. It seemed to tell the history of the city in its own way and was a pleasure to visit.

Lastly, we did eat breakfast at the restaurant. The food was OK, but not the best I've had. Definitely not bad if you're there and looking for something quick and easy.

All in all, I would definitely recommend Hotel Colonial and would gladly return.

Room Tip: Request one with an exterior window...some just have windows out to the interior courtyard. That is...

Great Hotel and Great location. I would stay here again. Just one block away from all the action and very cheap. I liked my room dispite the sink and shower being seperate. Who cares? The beds were well used, but hey its a 3 star not a 5 star and I slept just fine. The service was great and the hotel is amazingly old and beautiful.

On thing. The food in the resturant is a little expensive. Dinner is good, but don't bother with breakfast if you can find a better place.

This hotel is a wonderful location. It is near the zocalo and has a very good restaurant (lunch) on site. The only downside of this restaurant are the rooms. The beds are hard, the bathroom has the sink separated from the shower which does not give any privacy.

The room was stuffy, so I opened the window and i got devoured by mosquitoes. No AC in room.
This hotel has great potential. All they need to do is update the rooms to provide better bathrooms and better beds and they are winners.

Room Tip: go to the on-site restaurant for lunch. Get mole poblano.

I traveled solo in May to Puebla. The Hotel Colonial is located ideally, close to the zocolo and the weekend street markets. The rooms are large and clean. My room and its large wooden window/doors opened up to the square, which always had something going on...street performers, parades, food vendors, lovers on benches, kids playing in the fountain. I was there during the week of the Battle of Puebla celebrations, so there could've been more activity than usual. Yes, it was noisy at times, but I enjoyed the action. I would recommend this hotel. The staff were friendly. I ate breakfast at the restaurant, which was average. The only negative was the sulfur smell in my bathroom, but I figured it was old pipes/drainage and just kept the bathroom door closed and the windows open. They also have a nice rooftop that you can parade about and view of the city and adjacent plazas. Go to Puebla. Stay here.

Room Tip: I liked rooms that faced the plaza.

Perfect location right in the middle of historic Puebla, a block from the zocalo but on a pedestrian only paseo, friendly and helpful staff, reasonably priced, charming colonial ambiance in historical building. For these characteristics and more, the Colonial may be my favorite hotel in Mexico, certainly of those located in the larger cities. My very spacious room had a small balcony on the paseo for great people watching - buskers and vendors of every variety, wedding parties departing La Compania next door. If there was at one time a noise problem, it has been resolved. Friendly and helpful staff. Highly recommend.

We were in Puebla for a two day stay and had booked this hotel based on trip advisor recommendations. We had no complaints. The staff spoke English when requested so we could give our tired broken spanish a bit of rest.

We booked a double bedroom and the rooms were spacious for two people.Beds are large with clean sheets. Toilets are clean but old and the toiletries weren't great so we used our own soap/shampoo etc.The location is fantastic, a block away is the Zocalo and we also ate at the Meson Sacristia. Calle 6 Norte also had cute shops with Talavera ceramics and other handicrafts.

What this hotel has going for it - in my humble opinion, is that the staff are great, very attentive and quick to provide for your every need. The hotel restaurant boasts the best mole in Mexico and as a mole lover, I can't disagree. We generally found the food good. It has the 2nd oldest elevator in Mexico if that is a feature and it is in close proximity to the Zocalo - only about 3 blocks. What it doesn't have going for it are the rooms - at least our room. Don't ask for a single bed. They are all matrimonial and come in a very small room. You need to be prepared to share the toilet eith the toilet paper dispenser. They do not provide bath mats or face cloths. Beds are surprisingly comfortable dispite the lack of space. A good view of Popo from the roof. All in all, a good, not great place to stay.
